Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I sprayed in my garage with the el-cheapo HF gun. Not much overspray, and I had some things covered. I just hope I didn?t ruin anything... My toolbox got a light duting on it, but it all came off with some elbow grease  But since you have access to the stuff, then I'd say use it and do it right!

And if you're going to go with another color, go with dark green. I wanted to cause of my love for MSU (and the color green), but I also wanted to keep it original as I could.

Yeah, as an MSU alum I agree:D

great project huron angler. this thing is going to be a beautiful machine.

Thanks tbone, I am getting attached to this rig and we will probably keep it in th family for many years hopefully:)

Definitely use the spray booth if you can and are going to spray it's so much easier in a clean user friendly environment:D I haven't used any of the newer gravity feed guns but have seen them used and a lot less overspray and mist from those than my old siphon feed for sure. I still have plenty of stuff in the garage with multiple colors to prove it:) Allis chalmer orange from my tractor, yellow from an equipment trailer, metallic green from my old f100 etc...I plan to roll/brush trusty rusty mostly because I don't want to deal with spraying. It's also great to have a spray booth for the lighting especially if working with those darker colors you think it looks good until you move it outside then I may spray the rest of my trailer(outside) but may just spray bomb it.

Thanks for the advice Yooper, sounds like I should check out the booth option for sure.:)

Well...I have no idea how I got this lucky, but she likes painting and I guess epoxy falls into that category somehow;)

She also enjoys covering cushions and re-upholstering so the bow area will end up being just a bit more comfy than it is with the plywood bench:)

As far as the smile goes, I just said "smile pretty for the camera" and it worked:D
(I am truly blessed, thanks for the kind words- I will let her know too)

I got him down to $1300 for the boat, motor, trailer. He won't separate the motor, so I was hoping one of my friends wants the boat since I don't have room for it.:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I wish I had room for one more... Hopefully sometime this year, I'll buy a bigger place and will have more room. I wouldn't want more than one project going at a time though..LOL My Chieftain is almost on the water.. I have an electrical issue that I'm trying to track down right now. The starter wont turn fast enough to start the motor.. It worked fine 2 years ago when I started the (HOPEFULLY) last tear-down on this boat!! We're having some beautiful rainy, cold weather here in AZ this weekend and it would be nice to be on the lake without all the lake-lizards (wakeboarders)... My friend restored/updates his Dad's 14' '56 Crestliner. It's a sweet little fishing boat now.. your 12" reminds of it.. Enjoy your Sunday!

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I managed to get over to the boat garage and got some work done yesterday.

Basically getting the Merc lower unit put back together so I can sell it.

I've had three inquiries, two of which also want to buy the CMC bracket. I'd prefer to keep it but I can understand why nobody wants to manually tilt the 80hp.

I just need to pick up some grease to put on the internals prior to bolting it back up. I should go ahead and replace the impellar and gaskets while it's torn down so I'm stewing on that currently.

I should be able to bring the rig home to start paint prep this week. If anyone wants to buy a Dodge Caravan that doesn't shift into second gear let me know, it's taking up the SS parking space and needs to go.:) (still good for driving around town or as a storage shed:facepalm:)

That sucks about the van! Hope you can get it out of the way and be able to bring the boat home :D. Our '00 Ford Windstar has 170,xxx miles on it and nothing major has gone wrong. Sorry for that hyjack... Good luck on the motor stuff, I think a nice Johnnyrude or Evinrude is in order, heck maybe even a new Etec ;) except for the price of one .

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

If I'm gonna buy a donor boat to get the motor it will have to wait about 1 month according to my budget. If that 18 footer is still around I'd love to acquire it:)

I have three people interested in the Merc, one of which wants the motor by itself. After work today I'm gonna bolt up the lower unit and see if water is pumping.

It may be sold by this weekend if all goes well. The guy has a 22' pontoon and is not concerned with TnT or top speed, so it's actually a good deal for him too:)

After speaking with the Admiral...we may not be going with blue or green. She really like the look of the rig as-is and doesn't want it to look new or fancy;)

Hopefully we can get the Merc running again quickly enough to leave time to dry-fit the transom and drill out all the holes for bolts. I spent a good amount of time with the random orbital sander last night to make sure it will slide into place nicely.

It's looking like I'm gonna keep the bracket, so switching motors will be a breeze if necessary down the road.:)

Good idea keeping the bracket if I had one I wouldn't part with it. I have no idea what kind of repowering issues I may face down the road the ol 65 horse is a big  and a future power change would be easier to face without considering possible transom replacement down the road.

It would be great for keeping a raft from floating off to Canada up north:)

Don't tempt me...I'd LOVE even a USED Etec(too bad nobody sells them since they are the best OBs made) but I'd have to sell all my earthly possessions and cash out my 401k:facepalm:

Will let ya know if anything pans out!

I'm really looking forward to getting a decent outboard someday. Then I can enjoy the boat and spend less time on craigslist. Also will try to forget everything I learned about Merc and learn how to wrench on Johnnyrudes.

Thanks for stopping by fellas:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I've actually been working on the boat the last few days and got behind on photos.

Here's the transom wood getting a final sanding with the orbital to make sure it will fit properly(for some reason this thing didn't want to fit...I blame the previous restorer:facepalm:)

Everything looks good, so clamps on. These rubber-footed ones are super easy to deal with and don't leave imprints or marks on the wood.

If you look closely, you will see two arrows that helped me keep things straight while working on the transom.

Notice how the transom is not perfectly lined up, it should have been further to the left. More on that later:facepalm:

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I went ahead and drilled out the holes for all the required bolts that go thru the transom(yes, these are rusty...I will be buying new stainless bolts, washers and nuts)

Everything went well except for the fact that the lowest starboard side bolt is not going to hit all wood on the inside.

Big mistake, but I am still happy with the progress and it will be fine.:D

I also got some new lower unit lube for the merc. Hopefully it will run when we bolt it back together. I've been learning a lot about my favorite black boat anchor:D
