Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

We've gotten some more epoxy resin applied, again waiting for it to cure.:)

I've been focusing on my little boat lately, since it's at my house and I need to get at least one ready for the water, and a few other reasons.

Unfortunately my buddy who is storing the boat had the flu last week and I didn't get over to work on it since I didn't want to spread it to my two boys.

Now he's gonna be out of town until sunday, so progress will remain slow for a little bit. I might be bringing the boat home soon, but we have an extra Dodge van taking up space in the driveway that needs to be dealt with to create some space.

I found a new lead on a 70hp Evinrude, and since it weighs much less than the V4 85hp I might be leaning that direction. It would mean aquiring a 15' glasser, for which I also do not have storage space.

I might put the Merc on that boat and see what I can get back out of it. At least it's not a tri-hull;)

We could figure out what to do with that glasser:D

Mike, I think that 70 on your SS and your Merc on that glasser would maybe only cost you a couple hundred bucks in the end for a good running 70. I would go that route I have done some swapping and it has turned out really well. Hell last year I had three boats in the driveway. I wanted the trailer on one, the engine off another, and the boat on a different set up. my neighbor asked if i was staring a marina.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

It does seem like I will be better off buying an entire boat/trailer/motor combo so I have something to piece together and sell. Even if it's just a trailer to sell at least I will have something.

Here's another candidate, I might even be able to use that canvas top if it's in decent shape.

http://lansing.craigslist.org/boa/2305862056.html

I already have a "parts" motor for it:D (I am really trying to get a Johnnyrude though)

The 85hp Evinrude w/ TnT is still in the running, priced last at $950 again. The advantage to this one is that I would be able to sell my CMC bracket.

The '77 70hp is priced at $750 for just the motor, $950 w/ glasser and trailer. Fuel efficiency is the draw for this 3-cyl, and gas prices are making it more and more appealing each day:(

I'm gonna get working on the boat and see where these prices end up.

I listed my Merc for sale and have not gotten any responses so I'm gonna lower the price.

I would like to own and operate a marina so we will see where this leads:D

Forget that old Merc. I believe parts support is spotty on old Mercs.

I'm looking to make a purchase in a few more weeks, just keeping a close watch for now.

My boating budget is kinda on hold right now, bummer:(

I've been making a final list of items I need and Fastenal sells almost all of them, including paint.:)

I have been thinking that this year maybe I should wait until one or both boats are done before I get a new fishing license.

I know, kinda crazy talk but what if I just start fishing like last year:facepalm::D

Unfortunately we both know that CL doesn't work that way. The good deals are gone and gone quickly. Don't torture yourself till you have about $800 liquid.

Get The Loon 100% ready and go fishing. The SS will get done when it gets done.

Agreed, I should block myself from CL for a bit and relax...

Speaking of which...http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/boa/2308481055.html

No need to scrap that hull...that's project number three and the SS motor right there;)

Now what was I saying? :D

Yup, about $4 worth of 3M 5200 and maybe $5 in stainless bolts/nuts and the little rig is in business.:)

This year the goal is to have the SS ready for tubing and skiing by mid-June. Sanford Lake family reunion again around then...and I'd like to get some of my cousins/nephews up on skis.:)

More epoxying...dash panel on the right, and my bench piece for my little boat on the left.

Sidenote:...My 5-year-old son has really taken an interest in the woodworking lately. His little brother follows him around so I get lots of help. They both yell "earplugs" and cover their ears when they see me plug in the jigsaw:D

My advice is to NOT do this on the basement bathroom counter...unless you're renting:) (don't worry we cleaned up the drips)

I had a happy helper too:)

I can't believe you can get away with laying down epoxy on the bathroom sink!

No way, not at my place, I'd be toast!

I second that at my house next pic would be of me lying in the yard covered in epoxy, pool noodles and blood:)

Good plan to fish while you can and work on the boat when you have the time and money. I'm no expert (only one boat at the moment) but seems this could easily turn into a dirty word like work if a person lets it:cool:

LOL...we were only touching up a few spots, filling little voids with toothpicks and then thickened epoxy.:) It's my basement workshop bathroom too, so I have certain liberties.

I agree, you cannot let this become work. Not setting firm deadlines for completion helps a bunch. Last year at this time I was scrambling to get the boat ready for a friendly walleye tourney on the St. Joseph river, and I learned a lesson.

This year I have no goal other than mid-June tubing and skiing, so no rushing anything.

I think my plans for painting have changed. If I'm able to get new black or grey rubrail for $60-80 like our buddy DJ did then I am considering painting the boat blue or green instead of the yellow.

I already have 4 nice boat seats that are blue, grey and white so that is tempting.

Green just seems like a good choice too, I will need to decide in the next week or so since I need to order paint along with my other stuff from Fastenal.

I've got access to cheap labor and $1100 paint sprayers from a fishing buddy who is a painter, and I'm considering using my Grandpa-in-law's paint booth down in Grass Lake also. I guess the overspay can be a huge problem with oil-based paints.

Otherwise I would be rolling and tipping like most other bottom-feeders do:)

What do you guys think?

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I sprayed in my garage with the el-cheapo HF gun. Not much overspray, and I had some things covered. I just hope I didn?t ruin anything... My toolbox got a light duting on it, but it all came off with some elbow grease  But since you have access to the stuff, then I'd say use it and do it right :D!

And if you're going to go with another color, go with dark green. I wanted to cause of my love for MSU (and the color green), but I also wanted to keep it original as I could.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Definitely use the spray booth if you can and are going to spray it's so much easier in a clean user friendly environment:D I haven't used any of the newer gravity feed guns but have seen them used and a lot less overspray and mist from those than my old siphon feed for sure. I still have plenty of stuff in the garage with multiple colors to prove it:) Allis chalmer orange from my tractor, yellow from an equipment trailer, metallic green from my old f100 etc...I plan to roll/brush trusty rusty mostly because I don't want to deal with spraying. It's also great to have a spray booth for the lighting especially if working with those darker colors you think it looks good until you move it outside then:eek::facepalm::eek: I may spray the rest of my trailer(outside) but may just spray bomb it.
