HA, everything the manual says is the drive must be in forward before removing the l/u. They are a bit of a #%#$% to put back on as you have to have someone keep pressure on the prop against the gear as you slide the l/u up so the shift shaft stays in the right place.

Thanks for the info Glen, I've been learning alot about this old Merc and every little bit helps.

I've got an impellar kit on the way, with new gaskets and stuff(I cracked the water pick-up tube:facepalm:) so I will hopefully get it bolted back together soon enough.:)

I have not entirely given up on this motor yet, despite conventional wisdom telling me otherwise.

Can't go wrong for 500 if motor runs that hard top actually looks kind of cool on there.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Well I've been out of town for Easter and not much to report on the boat, had a great time in Kalamazoo.:)

Based on how much fun the boys had in the hotel pool...I can't wait to get out and do some tubing and swimming on the SS this summer:D

I had to cancel my other order from iboats, and now I'm waiting on plastic splashwell drain tubes, an $18 impellar, gasket, o-ring etc kit...and this switch panel.

It will be used for navigation lights, bilge pump, interior lights and charging GPS, spotlights and cell phones. It comes with a rubber gasket and holds extra fuses inside.

Looking forward to re-wiring the boat soon.:)...

I also picked up one of these, should be good for checking out the weather report and getting fishing reports from Broadcast, Don, Charlie or Jason if they are within range:D

It's a Standard Horizon handheld VHF, with a 5 mile line-of-sight range. Hopefully since I'm 6'5" I can manage 6-7miles if I reach up high;)

Some of the funniest stories I've heard have been on the VHF on slow fishing days...but in all honesty, this is a crucial item to have on board to be safe, especially on the big lakes.

OK I think I get it...like the gum right? :D

Do you have some crazy paint scheme planned?

As long as you provide friendly, accurate, and honest fishing reports...I'm fine hailing "Fruit Stripe" on the marine band.:D

I have been toying with naming the SS "Alloysius"...as a tribute to aluminum and other alloy metals, and their practical uses:)

Ah, no. If you want that you'll need to shout out to bcast. He is a heck of a guy.

If you want to be lied to, heckled, hazed, confused, frustrated or outright ignored, by all means, call me!:D

Or, if you are looking for a mid afternoon snack, I'll almost always have that sort of stuff on board:)

If only Jas had gone with the plexiglass floor " Fruit Stripe" or Fruity Pebbles would make perfect sense from an aerial view:) I need to get a marine radio and impeller as well. I suppose I should check compression on the old Johnson before doing too much but can't find my compression tester anyone seen it ?

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I finally got my side panels trimmed last night, they are ready for epoxy now after a little sanding.

We are leaning towards covering them in the shark marine vinyl, not sure if that would be too much or not. Otherwise I would coat the epoxy with some of WnG's recommended Epifanes spar varnish for UV protection.

The wood look might be the way to go, I've been back and forth on this for the last few months.:facepalm:

I may be selling the Merc tonight after work, a guy that lives near me says he is tired of looking at used motors, wants a Merc, and does not care that the lower unit is currently not assembled.

He says he's gonna bring his boat over and pick it up today, and I will give him the impellar kit next week as part of the deal.

If I can sell it for $500 as is that would work for me too.:D

I also need to go pick up my new 15' rig tonight or tomorrow...fair warning...it's a glasser:eek::p

I like some contrast. Picture this all the same: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/DSCF2504.jpg Not necessarily recommending carpet but something contrasting. Maybe a different color vinyl? or maybe upholstery type vinyl? Might look cool.

Mike, one thing I have to mention for you to consider. I have an 86 Merc 135 hp on my bass boat. I had the displeasure last year of trying to find floats for the carbs. There were only about a dozen in the good 'Ol USA. Check out the availeabilty on those before you go much further. They have a tendancy to go bad (pin holes). FYI...

I am the proud new owner of a 15' fiberglass canoe:D

We took it out for a spin on Lake Chemung in Howell after picking it up. It was great to be out on the water, can't wait to get on the rivers with it:)

Not a metal boat.

Not a Starcraft.

But it is a canoe:D

Cool man, congrats! Hey, I was just thinking...

With all this rain we have had the Pine (up by Luther) would be a great river to run this spring! She should be moving along pretty quick. Have you ever been?
