Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

The fact that the 115 was included in the options led me to believe all was good.....sorry about that.

No biggie Mark. Not all of us know that Mike's boat is rated for 90 :D

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

The 16' SS is actually rated for 85...the 115 has been in consideration due to the fact that another iboater has one bolted on the same boat(of course, minus the CMC bracket) and has been happy with it.

For fuel consumption I would probably do better with the 85, but since it's cheaper the 115 is calling out to me.:D Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks for all the replies.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Some more progress last night, got the bow rails and more of the bow structure removed.

I'm gonna leave the aluminum bow seat structure in the boat while painting since it's so light.

Hopefully we can get the wood to fit soon so I can drill the holes and get epoxying.:)

I will say that with all the interior open...this would make a sweet little center console rig:D

Some good news on fasteners too...my fishing buddy is friends with a guy who also went fishing with us last summer twice...and he works for Fastenal, great deals on stainless hardware:D

I let him know that he is welcome on the boat if he is the "rivet and bolt" supplier.

Snow is melting pretty quickly from some warm rainy days, but my boat storage facility manager says to wait on taking her home, more snow on the way he says:eek::facepalm:

Oh well, plenty of time to work on the boats yet:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Well despite the fact that I have not posted any photos...I have been working on the SS.:)

I left my camera in someone's car and just got it back last night, so I will get caught up soon.

I returned my extra piece of 3/4" Arauco and exchanged it for 1/2" for side panels.

I'm ready to start epoxy sealing the transom, dash panels and kicker bracket ply, just need to pick up some cheap paint brushed and get going tonight.

I am debating on whether or not to seal the side panels, since they will be dry and aren't load-bearing.

I finally managed to get my little boat trailer moved back into the garage, so I can get stuff done on both projects. Hopefully both will be completed by the end of June:D

Cutting new side panels out of 1/2" Arauco ply. I really like this stuff, and I think I could have used this rather than the 3/4" for the deck since the epoxy adds so much strength to the wood.

First piece done, I left it long for now, since I want to test fit and see if I want them to be longer than they were before.

I'm also going to leave them 14" tall so the shelf has more height on the interior side. This will be covered with some small aluminum angle riveted in.

They turned out pretty good considering I am no carpenter. It helps that I used a pretty small wood scroll blade on my jigsaw, and it's pretty much brand new.

We started epoxy work on these pieces(didn't get some edges enough the first time). That is the exterior transom piece for my tiny boat.:)

This is a huge box of SS parts that I brought back from the storage garage. I will be bringing the rig back here to prep for paint.

You don't think rain will every get in there to soak them?
Wish the PO that had my boat sealed mine.
My panels near the transom are getting soft and crumbly.
My floor is solid as a rock.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I just porch & floor painted my side panels and bow deck wood. I figured if they rotted someday it wouldn't be a big deal to replace them and I wasn't buying any more of that &%^$ epoxy! Considering I'm ripping out my bow deck here in a few days anyway, I guess it's good I didn't waste the money on that.

Since they had to dig me up anyway I thought I would pop in. Great work Mike. The 1/2" plywood decision is a good one, gonna do the same myself, but I did go with it on the floor.( I took up 1/2" ply) Now if I may, keep in mind the "noise" factor. You may want to : carpet, paint, undercoat. some of these areas. If I could ever get ahead of you, I would show you what I decided. I am going to have some open areas as well as areas hidden behind lids or sliding doors. I know...don't say it.

Yeah I have enough epoxy to seal them so I might as well. (was kinda hoping to save some for my next boat:))

Thanks Sprint...but the transom is not in, yet. Still fine tuning, not sure why it doesn't want to fit.

It's about time you got back to work.:p I'm considering re-doing my bow as well, since the pieces aren't perfect. Once I have cushions there it won't make much difference though.

I'm planning on sheet foam behind the side panels. Noodles would probably be quieter but I lready have some of the pink stuff laying around collecting dust.

I removed the last trace of carpet when I took out my starboard side panel...and have no plans on putting any back in. Paint and vinyl will have to do for me.

Thanks for stopping by fellas, more progress/pictures tonight hopefully :)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Here's the port side panel...I don't like the look and I'm gonna level it off all the way across for more functionality.

They made them from the factory this way to match the helm since the controls bolt onto it, but I like using the entire shelf. I went 14" high on the panel, about an inch higher than previous.

Boat%20resto%20winter%202010%20104.jpg

I riveted in a couple more pieces of aluminum into the bow structure to make it more rigid. I acquired a bunch of material at a good price so I have plenty to work with.:)

I'm surprised how much gunk built up under those consoles in one season:eek:

Boat%20resto%20winter%202010%20105.jpg

Here's a shot of both side panels in test fitting. I got all the cables out, steering, throttle, shifting, main battery terminal etc. Getting ready to strip the flaky paint off and prep for a bit.

I also am happy that we got the transom pieces to fit. Not smoothly or anything, but good enough that I will go ahead and epoxy the wood now.

I bent the edge of the splashwell back some to make room, and the vertical gunwale supports had edges sticking out that were persuaded out of the way. A bit of a hassle but I'm glad everything fits.

I like your idea of going to a full length shelf, functional eh!

Thanks TII...yeah I'm glad I got some stuff done last spring prior to fishing. I only have a few big items to check off the list and I can get back out there.:)

Function wins over form for me nine times outta ten...and the area below the shelves will be packed with foam so good use of that space too.:)

Yeah level those side panels off. Easier to cover them then anyway http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/DSCF2503.jpg

I agree...way easier to wrap with vinyl/carpet with no angles to deal with.

NCAA basketball tourney has started, so just when it seemed like I was getting serious about the boat I will be taking a little break.

MSU snuck in this year somehow, and we might have a quick exit...so it might be a very short hiatus from the resto.:)

Go green!

Looking good HA. I was thinking about side panels for my mariner today and sounds like Fsh has a similar plan. With mine being a C.C. I think having little hidey holes here and there will be advantageous . Really like the full shelf plan never too many places to put stuff :)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Some epoxy is curing on the dash panel edges that I didn't get sealed well enough last time around. Also the side panels are getting resin painted on as well.

I'm still gonna trim down those panels so the full shelf is available, but we started on the other end.

I'm really leaning towards getting the Evinrude 85hp that I had posted a while back, the owner listed it for $950 now(it was $1150), so if I sell the Merc and hydraulic bracket I won't have to chip in too much extra.:)

Just need to get the transom done first...so I can pick up the motor:;)

I noticed he bumped the price down on that Rude too. I think it's about time to pull the trigger on that eh!
