Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Anyone know when that's supposed to happen?

I heard July is a pretty good month:rolleyes:

Hey, word on the street is that we had record breaking snow amounts in our area for the month of Feb.

I hate cars, I never win with em. Sound like we might just be riding along in the same boat man.

Taking off my splashwell was a pain, well I didn't have any good drill bits to drill out the rivets . Nice new vehicle too by the way. Spring is coming, well maybe:D!

Wow, all this talk of cold weather. I was in Indianapolis for the motorcycle Expo, 17-19 Feb and it was a toasty 45-55 degrees F during the day. The went to LA and it was 65-70!

What are you guys complaining about? :D

I hate trailers even more than cars.

My 12 footer isn't even ready to take out yet:facepalm:, is that an offer to fish on the Islander since you are so far ahead of schedule?:p

Yeah we love the Flex so far, and averaged 29mpg on the way back from Alpena last week. Pretty good compared to my 210hp '99 Explorer, and it cranks out 262hp too:D

Triton you were in the States? And even the midwest:D

I could've used an extra hand buddy, let me know next time you are in the neighborhood and we will put ya to work:p

You must've been here on the warmest day in February. LA sounds good right now, I miss temps in the 70s.

WOW NICE! Thats darn good for something around that size, and hp, and room inside. Almost wants to make me look at getting that rather than a truck. A better tow rig is on my list to get before spring. Sorry for the hyjack  had to comment :).

A couple photos from the other day, still fine tuning the transom operation. Progress has been slow, and I have some obligations this weekend too, MSU/U-M basketball game on saturday.:)

It's a good thing I don't have any firm deadlines to meet. I think I've decided to use my Grandpa-in-law's painting booth for the boat. I will be stripping everything out of it except the deck, and waiting to bolt in the transom.

Plenty of time for Lake Huron to thaw out still...tons of ice moving around everywhere, no good for boating.

And here is out new back-up tow rig. 2009 Ford Flex, seats 7, tons of room for everything. 3.5L v6 with direct fuel injection. I love the acceleration, w/ 262hp it's a great motor. If I could get one of these for the SS I'd be an I/O convert.

Rated to pull 4500lbs and has a great long wheelbase. I'm sure the mpg will still be scary when towing, but that's why I love the tin boats, it could be worse.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Do you guys think I can still flip the hull for painting? The deck will be the only thing left in the boat after I take out the consoles, side panel, and bow structure.

I don't recall anyone doing this with anything other than a bare hull, so I figured I'd get some opinions. The added weight of the deck is significant, since I used 3/4" and applied healthy amounts of epoxy resin to the plywood.

I'm gonna be stripping everything out of the interior this afternoon, and hoping to finally get the transom finished.:)

I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem. I did mine with 3 people and no deck, no problem. So I'm sure that 3 people or 2 would be able to do it without a problem. :D

We had 4 to flip my 18' with no deck. You could probably do your 16' with a deck with 4 strong people.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I think I agree, if anything having the deck in there will help keep things from twisting around too much.

I think I will wait until I bring the rig home to execute the flip, about two or three weeks maybe. Whenever it stops snowing/freezing.

I got the two consoles, windshield, side panel, Merc controls, and some of the bow structure all out of the boat this afternoon.

I was finally able to get the controls off the side panel, that was a real pain since the bolts were rusted, bent, stripped and who knows what else:facepalm::eek::eek:

So I'm happy about that, some good teardown progress. I was telling my buddy that helped out that I should be a real expert at this point, being the second time around and all:rolleyes::redface:.

So I will be working some more on the transom, just taking a little break since I'm at an impasse of sorts. Not sure if I need to make the wood smaller or manipulate the parts of the boat that are creating the issue.

Still pondering about what to do as far as propulsion goes.

I have a 5.5hp kicker, and Minn Kota, so no problem on slow speeds.

I'm considering selling the CMC bracket($300) and the Merc($300 as a running motor w/ bad compression) and chipping in some more cash and getting a 85hp Evinrude that has TnT. I've spoken to the owner and he also has a 115hp with no trim/tilt that I could buy cheaper than the 85.

We'll see, I will stew on this some more. Opinions welcome as always.:)

TnT over the 115. Not even a question. :)

Yah, rustle up a few meat eater type doods down there in Lansing and you'll have that SS flipped no prob.

I've seen that 85 (and the 115) on clist for a while now. I think you can beat him up on price some. I'd venture to say the 85 would be plenty for your 16 footer, T&T bonus. The 115 would be fast! Now the Islander would also be great and the UP Chief would be equally excellent (whoops, how'd that slip in there, I thought we were talking about an OB for the SS:confused:)

While I'm sure it would be a hair raising ride for a time, I don't think overpowering + a big set back would be a good setup. Having had a 16' SC with a V4 on it, it's stern heavy enough as it is. I wouldn't want that V4 leveraged out on a jack plate.

Mike, I am an (ahem) older gentlemen (51) and you are a scrapping young man. I flipped my 18' (empty) by myself so I know you and a couple friends (2) can flip yours easily.
As far as the motor, stay with the 85 and tnt. Larger motors are nice to have if you want speed, but dude, gas is not getting any cheaper and believe me the larger motors know how to drink. Besides, a tnt is priceless in my book. Great work lil Bro, keep it up.

The fact that the 115 was included in the options led me to believe all was good.....sorry about that.
