Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I need to get this cut and epoxied or it will be the achilles heel to the entire project:eek:

Really? I was thinking all along that keeping the fishing rod out of your hand and the wrench in was always the issue. Glad to know that's not it!!! It's just some carpentry and epoxy! Great that can be overcome! The other, maybe not so much.:D

Touche` :D

We've got a birthday party to go to today so the boat has to wait but the good news is I didn't go fishing this morning:) One of my buddies was looking to head out today too.

Yeah it's kinda cold and gusting up to 30mph, so don't give me too much credit...if it was 70 and calm it's a safe bet I'd be out on the water somewhere, dragging an old Mepps around chasing Pike.

I spent some time digging thru stuff for the boat last night, making sure I have everything that I need. Can't wait for the epoxy to be done so we can pull the rig back in the garage. Then I can work in any type of weather again.

Here are some more thrilling photos of the epoxy resin curing:D

This stuff is really easy to apply and I'm glad to know that all the wood on my boat should be waterproofed enough to last a few years. Well worth the cost and effort to do.:)

Starts to get tough to find a place to put all that wood when you can't pile it up doesn't it. Look'n good man you will be on the water in no time now.

Yeah I sure could use a two-car garage:D

Are you getting the same crappy weather we have? (I'm guessing you are...or else you'd be out on the fastest Starcraft on the planet instead of being on iboats;))

Hey buddy! How is your cure time with these temps we are having? I think I am seeing us climb out of the 40's this week into the 50's. Looks great man!:D

It was around 60 degrees in the garage earlier when I put this coat on...it's around 52 now so the cure time is going to be longer for sure.

I will give it a good 30 hours probably before is isn't tacky anymore and I can flip the pieces again.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Do you guys think I should run an electric heater or is 50 degrees ok?

I think the epoxy is flammable so I was going to let it cure with whatever temps we get.

It's not so cold down here(low 60's) but the wind is blowing like hell. You are correct I planned to go out today but that wind is crazy. As I set here now the ss is still hooked to the suburban.

Run the heater. No worries with epoxy. When I was glassing the floor in mine I ran a salamander in my garage the entire night. The parts in my garage cured faster than the parts in my basement that night (was probably mid 90s in my garage after a few hours.)

The wood work is looking great. I'm sure it will be a great feeling to walk around on your new deck.

I'll be doing my last piece this week some time. I left the last peice removable to help the guys get the engine in and out.

Thanks Sprintst, I can't wait to check it out and I will be spending lots of time on the rig.

I'm pretty sure this epoxy is only adding strength and stiffness to an already strong 3/4" so it should not flex much, plus I have some backing plates for the seat bases I will need to epoxy.

Are those mechanics done with your motor yet? EDIT(saw that you got the block dropped in, congrats almost ready to launch for the Holiday:D)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I just checked the plywood again, it has a nice sheen to it and is curing nicely. This coat was more generous than the first.

We have used exactly half of the resin so far and that is about perfect. Keep in mind that this includes the two transom pieces for my 12 footer so I'm happy with the coverage.

I will be coating the three main deck pieces with another coat on each side before using any more on the other pieces. The load-bearing deck needs the most so it is the top priority.

The garage is about 60 degrees now with the electric heater going:)

That's one thing I was really pleased with. The old floor flexed too much. I might have gotten away with 5/8 but 3/4 rocks so far. The epoxy coating was the icing on the cake as I can't see water getting at it and the deck is indestructable.

The resin cured a bit over night but still has a few hours to go.

I'd like to get out and finish riveting in my ski locker pieces but this weather we're getting is something else. Extremely windy, cold and not a cloud in the sky:rolleyes:.

I may wait until I can bring the SS back into the garage to start installing the deck permanently. That should be tuesday hopefully.:)

I hear ya. I've got parts curing in the basement and they are taking for...ev...er. This weather is COLD! My idiot friend borrowed the West 105/205 I was planning on using on these parts to work on his racing sailboat last weekend and never brought it back. So now I'm stuck using the US Composites stuff with their medium hardener that takes eons to cure. The parts are to complete the forward part of the casting platform and tackle center.

As a positive the pike are biting. Grabbing a bite to eat right now and then I'm heading back out for a few more hours.

What are you getting them on, Mepps spinners?

I plan on spending a good part of this summer chasing pike and walleye around. Glad I got the kicker bracket for the 5.5hp Johnson so I can troll cheaply all day long:)

I've had the best luck with a J-11 Firetiger Rapala. The bass have been hitting the best on Mimic Minnows with spinners. I live on a real shallow lake so I'm pretty limited as to the crankbaits I can use without filling the boat with salad. I haven't had much luck with my Mepps yet this year. I tried a few this afternoon with no hits.

Nice, I have a floating rapala just like the firetiger that I haven't casted in a while. Maybe get it into the rotation:)

I hear ya on the shallow lakes, Lansing area has two deeper than 20ft. For somebody that grew up in Petoskey and fished the big lakes in 100+ it's difficult to fathom(no pun intended). We catch lots of grass pike:rolleyes:

I may be visiting the Holloway reservoir to check out the pike and walleye, and for cruising around, it is 6 miles long. Plus my cousin lives out that way.
