No, this one is just south of Brighton in between Pinckney and Hamburg off M-36. It's pretty small but the fishing is good.

Ahhh OK thanks...seems the only poor fishing lakes in Mi are limited usually to the one I'm on at the time...lol

Just a couple more exciting epoxy resin drying action shots. It's taking longer with the colder temps for sure. The heater is keeping it around 60-65 and that is helping a bunch.

The fishing poles are quarantined in the corner with the OB gas cans. The little OB and 5.5 Johnson are stored as well to keep the progress unimpeded.:D

I've been thinking of other things that need to be done while I'm lazily waiting for the resin to cure.

One idea is to get the ski locker teak insert cleaned up and oiled.

Never done this before, but I'm thinking about getting teak pieces to put on the gunwales so I need to learn.:D

I had to post a photo of a piece of my motivation...hanging in the garage by the door on my Rapala keychain is the Mercury Thunderbolt ignition key reminding me of good times to come:cool: (after the hard work is done that is;))

Security looks a little light around those fishing rods buddy. Looks like a fella might just be able to waltz in, grab them and shurk his boat building responsibilities.

Good progress and I like your motivation! I'll be on epoxy in the next day or two which should be a long process given our temps this week, eh.

Cheers!

Yeah, that picture doesn't show it, but you'd have to get thru a 4x8 piece of sticky epoxied plywood to grab the poles. It's relatively effective.:D

Wow ya read the whole thing:) Sorry for all the riff raff thrown in there with the boat restoration.

Glad to hear that it helped you out. Lord knows I wouldn't have a clue what I'm doing without this web site and guys like North Beach and Ezmobee around to keep us on the right track.

If you really want a good read check out North Beach's 21' Sunchief or Oops! hull extension thread:D

You should start a resto thread and folks will be glad to help out if you have any questions.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Yesterday I managed to get two more of the ski locker pieces riveted down. It looks like I will be using all 10 pieces but I will try to save one to reinforce the bow U-shaped bench structure.

I need to buy more pop rivets and get the rest done so I can get the deck down after the epoxy is cured. One more coat on the bottom and it's ready to go back in the boat.

I figured out that if I use the shop vac after every hole I drill it doesn't make a mess out of the bilge with aluminum shards.:)

After examining the steering assembly I have come to the conclusion that I will just take it apart on the helm end to install.

Has anyone else done it this way?

This is a photo of the piece I may just take apart and clean, then regrease and install. It sure looks old and gunked up, but that's what grease looks like.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I wanted to add that the steering predicament is all the result of having a completely rotten helm panel.

When it was removed it all fell apart and I didn't have to disassemble the steering at all to get it out. No template either.

So when I go to put it back in with a new piece of epoxied ply I need to figure out how to get the "wedge" piece pictured above on the outside of the dash panel so it can do it's job and angle the wheel properly.

It obviously is too big in diameter to fit thru the hole...so that's why I say I need to take the rack apart...feed the column thru, then put it back together.

Does any of this make sense?:D

Mike, just remove the 4 bolts holding the helm to the rack. Nothing bad will happen I assure you. You can also add some white lithium grease to the rack at that time.

When you buy a new system the helm and rack are separate. You drill your hole, stick your helm through it and bolt it to the rack.

That's what I did. Mine is a Teleflex rotary though, not a rack. I also had to install Heli-coils in the 3 mounting holes for the steering assy. PO or factory overtightened the original bolts and munched the threads. Drilling for the Heli-coils allowed metal shavings into the gears so I disassembled the whole thing and re-greased it.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Thanks fellas, I appreciate the info. I am not sure why I had it in my head that I should never take it apart from the rack.

Ezmobee explained this all to me a few months ago but apparently I'm a very slow learner when it comes to steering.

I may consider replacing the helm at some point in the future since this one does have a couple cracks in the plastic. We'll give the old one a go and see how it feels.

Oh well, just need it to quit raining so I can get to it.:D

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I'm getting ready to get the second coat of epoxy on the underside of the main deck.

One issue I have is that some dripped down on the inside of the pedestal seat base holes and needs to be ground down so the backing plates will be seated flush.

When I'm grinding the epoxy do I need a respirator and everything or is it going to be ok with a normal mask kinda like this one?

Hey Mike, glad to see your progressing right along, I've been hit with the ho hums from this weather add in the honey-do's and well not much happening here...I like that steering wedge thingy. need to find something like that for mine, feels like a go-cart set-up the way it is now.

Does look like we're gonna get out of this funky weather by the weekend an into next week....woohoo...won't be long till we're putting fresh line on the spools and trying to recall where the bait bucket is :D
