Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Wait a minute, I think you just tried to swipe my downriggers! I haven't even had them for a day yet! Good effort buddy.

In the water by next weekend, WOW!!!

Oh I'd never try to swipe another man's fishing gear:eek:, that's just wrong...that was intended to be an invitation to you (and your downriggers) to join me on the big lake so I can teach you how to use those things:D

Have no fear, I will be scouring craigslist for a nice pair of Penn electric or manuals(if have any cash left after the resto).

The biggest challenge to getting the rig on the water by next weeend is going to be the vinyl, but since Roslynn is in charge of that I have no worries;)

I did find out that I need to rewire the trailer for the LEDs so I'm legal. I was sorta hoping the old wires would be functional but that's not a big deal.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for some riggers to complement the SS! Man they are expensive!

You should have put your bride in charge of the whole thing, would have been ready months ago! (she doesn't have the addiction issues like you do I am sure).

So what is up with the wiring? Give me a heads up as I'll likely be going LED's for my trailer (and boat for that matter).

Cheers man!

I tried putting her in charge of the whole resto and it didn't work:redface:

LOL :D

The wiring...when I bought the rig only the port side light worked. I removed the lights and put them on my little trailer and only the port side worked there too. I figured that meant that the wiring was fine and the bulb was bad.

But, when I hooked up the LEDs nothing worked at all, so I'm at a loss.

I figure I should just get new wires and start from scratch. The Shore Land'r trailer came with a special "waterproof" wiring hub that is under the stern area. I'm gonna rip it all out and paint the trailer and start over.

I'm not exactly a wiring guru either...I got a free VHF radio last week off craigs(the buttons didn't work on it) and went to hook it up and try to test it...had a 50-50 chance on the red/black(should've taken it apart first to make sure) and failed. Fried the board on it within seconds.

See, that little fishing trip really cleared your head and allowed you to get focused on the project H.A. Great progress. I love the kiddie toys scatter around the garage & project! Makes me feel at home! :)

Rusto's rust converting primer is good stuff. I used it on a big 'ol rusty I-beam in my house and it came out awesome.

... I did catch an 18" bass but I tossed him back prior to getting a picture.

Ahhh yes, the give away answer to "is he a fisherman" :D

My neighbor had some good results with that stuff on his camper trailer, looked good to me as well...

My buddies all freaked out that I didn't measure the bass or get a picture since it could have been bigger than 18".

I would rather get the fish back in the water sometimes so it survives. We didn't have a camera handy and nobody looked like they were in a hurry to get one:D

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Hello to all,

I've just bought a Starcraft 1985 MR160 and I found this thread while searching on Google. Your tale reminds me in some ways of a book from a while back; "Zen, and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance." I'm on your page 14; in the past. I just ran across this offer on Craigslist. I only bring it up because someone on page 12, I think, asked about the possibility of getting a Starcraft of his own; you mentioned Craigslist.

http://charlotte.craigslist.org/boa/1725028126.html

You might find it interesting as well. I can hardly wait to get caught up. Hey, when I get there, maybe, I'll see this post; but that will be in the future. Wait, I'm getting confused. Anyway, great presentation, lots of pictures, and it'll be very helpful when I redo my deck.

tks,,,,

Welcome to the site Murphy:)

That link takes me to a rig that is strikingly similar to mine! Nice setup there. Not sure what he means my "WP plywood" if it's pressure/chemical treated wood then that's a problem. The copper leaches into the hull and causes major problems with corrosion.

You should start a thread and post some photos of your Starcraft:D

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I spent some time last night applying some resin to the edges since they are the most critical area for moisture intrusion.

Slow going but progress is progress:)

One question...a small batch of resin was mixed and not used fast enough since the edges are tedious.

The cup started to smoke and got really hot after a while. Is this normal for resin that is curing past it "working time?"

I thought maybe the plastic container was causing a reaction but I vaguely remember reading about this phenomenon and I think it's normal.

i did the same thing when i was doing my deck. i had never worked with resin before and mixed up almost a quart. after about 20 min the thing turned solid and was so hot i couldnt pick it up. a buddy who works as a cnc machinist and regurly makes molds from glass says he has seen resin mixed in paper buckets that have actually caught on fire.

Thanks for the info Andy, that's what I was hoping to hear.

It seemed like it was about to burst into flames:eek:

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Not much to report here...just been brushing resin on the plywood and riveting more aluminum pieces down.

I hope to have the epoxy all done by the end of the weekend so we can spend all of next week working on the marine vinyl.

Some horrendous weather coming my way...supposed to be back down in the 30s with some rain, sleet, and maybe snow?!?

Gotta love Michigan:rolleyes:

To anyone that's used Pettit Easypoxy(EZ that means you:)) did you get it from a local supplier or online?

I was on their site earlier and didn't see how to place an order.

Furthermore...when I used their locator tool it recommended that I visit my local Waste Marine to buy it. I'm not interested in paying marked-up prices so that doesn't help me out much. Thanks for any info.

Looks like the guys over at JMS Online have it (got my Gluvit there) at a very reasonable price.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

So I lied when I said I'm done cutting the plywood.

I still need to cut the hole in the helm dash for the steering wheel. Since my old dash was the most rotten of all the wood on the rig when I got her I am lacking a good template.

So...does anyone know with reasonable certainty what size the factory setup requires?

I need to get this cut and epoxied or it will be the achilles heel to the entire project:eek:

I'm going back with the same hardware and I can measure that to get an idea...but just wanted to throw that out there.

Any thoughts regarding this are appreciated.:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Well I just watched an outdoor channel show featuring Kalamazoo native Kevin VanDam hauling in Smallmouth Bass out of lake St. Clair and if that's not motivation for me to finish the rig I don't know what is:D

I think he was fishing some of Bwana Don's and HopeSheFloats's spots;)

OK I'm off to get a nice first coat of epoxy on the topside of all the plywood pieces. I'm pretty happy with the way the Clarkcraft resin lays down and flattens right out.:)
