Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

The word has it that the Atlantic Salmon fishing is great this year...and this is one rumor I'd like to prove true.

They are eating the gobies and flourishing, best news I've heard in a while:D

Oh man, I like this rumor! A lot!! This is great motivation for Islander work. I can't wait to get out on the big lakes and test out my down rigger setup this summer:):D

Very nice job on the boot. It's tough to get your tools where they need to go sometimes, but you did a great job. Almost looks "professional". ;)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

GPS should be very accurate in open water trolling situations,...

The paddle wheel is great if your fishing in river current, If your pulling plugs upstream the GPS will give you speed over water but it wont reflect the speed of the current moving under the boat,....So you speed over water will read way higher than the speed you want to be pulling cranks at, ..The paddle wheel will give you that speed,..

Good info Teamster, thanks for posting. I don't fish rivers too often but I see the advantage could be huge if they like a certain speed like walleye do sometimes. There's a river with walleye near jasoutside that I need to check out sometime.:)

Agreed, time to get going eh? :)

Thanks LL, I wasn't particularly looking forward to that task but it went pretty smoothly and I'm glad it's done.

Also, I still have to do the same thing for the fuel line now as well but that should be easier.

I bought them at my local West Marine, but you can order them online too. Here's a link for the two I got.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

We have been back in town for a few days and I got a few things done on the boat today.

In order to bolt the 70hp Johnson on the CMC bracket, there were three aluminum plates that needed to be removed.

They are required to install a clamp-on outboard, like the old 80hp Merc.

This requires a 3/8" hex bolt(aka allen wrench) that I needed to buy since nearly all hex bolt kits only go up to 1/4".

$9 later and I was in business.

Here's a photo prior to removing anything.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Here are a couple photos from our time up north. This guy was hanging around looking for fish, just like us.:)

I got to see him swoop down and take off from a tall pine tree and it was like watching a jet or rocket.

We got out on the water and spent a few hours trolling for salmon.

I had one on for about 10 seconds, but he spit the hook. Felt like a nice one and had my adrenalin pumping for a while, fun stuff.

Back to the SS, here's what the bracket looks like now, ready for the motor to be bolted on.

I have a maple in the front yard that is ready to help hoist the 70hp for a bit.

I'm getting awfully anxious to see what this motor looks like, and how it performs.

We are headed to Kalamazoo for a birthday party tomorrow, not sure when but the Johnson should be on the boat soon.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

We managed to get the 70hp Johnson moved out of my Ford Explorer tonight:)

After we engineered a system to support the motor on a stout Maple tree conveniently located in the front yard.

70hp Johnson bolted in place, one whole down from the highest.

We'll see about performance in due time, it can be raised perhaps.

Thanks LL, yeah kind of a late night project but that's when my buddy could help. Glad to get it done.

It feels like a home stretch...just lots of wiring to do, on the boat and the trailer.:)

Thank HA, those went into favorites.

No problem Glen, those are probably the nicest cable boots I've seen. Just hope they are durable.

Hi cutbait, thanks for stopping by:) This thread is lengthy and difficult to navigate so let me know if you have questions.

I've been on the receiving end of some excellent advice on the resto forums here for a while so glad to help out.:)

Thanks Sprint, I agree...ready to get this rig back on the water. My youngest son has been asking to go fishing so he's ready too.

The big lake looks great man, I'm jealous:)

It was great to get out there and the conditions were excellent, I can't wait to check out Saginaw Bay soon too!:D

I see a Jonny on the back of the SS, HA. Are you smelling the water? You're down to dotting I's and crossing T's. Well maybe a couple of X's and O's too, but getting close. :D

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Got the fuel line splashwell boot installed.

I wish spellcheck would recognize splashwell.:)

For that matter they are now claiming that I spelled spellcheck wrong.

DSCF1093.jpg

Starboard dash panel all set to go. Just need a few more wiring pieces to connect all the workings.

DSCF1089.jpg

We also got the starboard windshield installed this afternoon.

Yes, those are fishing rods...good motivation.

We did get out Friday night and caught a mess of Crappie.

My buddy also hooked into a trophy Northern Pike, about 36"...so we had some fun on my little boat.

Still building and have fishing rods loaded. I like that, HA. And I like the looks of the SS. She's a clean machine.

When you get a splashwell or spellcheck underlined try right clicking and Add to Dictionary. Starcraft. Mercruiser and a few other common words always came up bad for me until I found that little trick. BTW - I'm using FireFox.
