She looks good out in the sun. Helps to cure the paint as well....like oven baking.

I need to get my old ratty canvas out and get some of my snaps in place...thanks for the reminder.

Looks great. I actually really like the yellow rub rail with the gray and I wouldn't be in any hurry to change it out.

Ok, I've kept quiet long enough, but since you've got it all apart again and seem to be addressing the details......that raggity vinyl edge in the bow area where you put the vinyl on the gunnels and the bow support piece is driving me crazy. You gotta either trim that out with some ange or something or redo the vinyl and wrap it.*

*I only nit-pick cuz I care :p

The pics sure help out great shots HA, the boat is coming along beautifully. I'm just getting caught up on your thread..I was actually trying to find photos of the trailer. I could just see the rollers a little bit...I'll back up some more on the thread to find some clear shots of the trailer. It looks awesome... can't wait for the finish

Thanks sprint, the weather has been perfect and that rustoleum is curing up nicely.

Canvas is gonna be a challenge, but the admiral keeps telling me she can do it so we'll see.

I really want a bow cover, since the boat is gonna be stored outdoors all summer.

Great boat building weather lately eh bro

It couldn't be much nicer, even better if we were out on the water.:D

Thanks EZ, this grey is a good color. I laughed when I saw your reference to the shark vinyl in the bow.

It has bothered me too...since it first got adhered about 2 years ago.

We(Roslynn) didn't leave enough to wrap it, so it just needs to be trimmed about 1/8-1/4"...but a thin piece of aluminum might look better now that you mention it.

It will look much nicer once dealt with, that much is certain.:D

Thanks FnM:) There are some photos of the trailer from last fall, here's one. Let me know if you need more, this thread is not easily navigated due to the excessive time I have taken.

Since the paint has dried and cured we got started on attaching some hardware.

The cleats needed some work. The factory stainless fittings have very minor pitting and are still in good shape.

The yellow plastic was all dirty but some steel wool and 220 grit sandpaper cleaned it up a bit.:)

DSCF0910.jpg

I learned that they are easily taken apart for detail work. I am a big fan of the cleats with the color matching the boat.

DSCF0908.jpg

Kinda dark to get good photos, but they look better.

The bow rails, step pads, SS rod holders and all 4 cleats are installed.:)
(still need to trim off the rubber piece on each rod holder, since the caps were removed forcibly by my offspring)

I am going to look into buying a couple corks to replace them to keep water out of the boat.

The anchor light base will go in the empty hole there. I may install some Bert's tracks later on, which will replace the wood step pads on the gunwales.

It feels good when you get to installing the hardware, like you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I absolutely love those cleats with the color inserts. I've never seen them like that before, really gives the boat some unique character. Every boat needs something like that, I consider my unique pieces to be the retro bow light & Jetson stern light. Those cleats are almost like a signature.

I like your wood-grained step pads too, more character.

If you just throw a nice piece of angle aluminum along the bottom of that vinyl edge in the bow, it will look great. Pretty cheap at HD.

Looking better all the time!

Thanks HA,

The pic is great, I actually got lucky to boot and clicked on your trailer re-build section and went over the whole part. Your trailer turned out quite well and I like the fact that you have double front rollers per side. That distributes the hull weight better.

I think you mentioned that mrs admiral was going to make a top for the boat. My gal used a new plastic tarp to make a protocol one first and the tarp was cheap compared to the sunbrella material. She used clothesline pins to make the folds first over the alum frame and a marking pen used for clothes that washes off easy to mark where to sew. The marking pen can be used for notes and arrows ect on the top as it comes off easy.

The tarp idea was a great way to figure out what the top should like and to modify before building the canvas one. Good Luck

I have conceived a plan for the wiring...I will spare you the rudimentary schematic, and just post a few photos.

I split the main run cable and attached two forked ends that will be the positive and negative leads on the bus bar.

If we end up wanting to install interior lights...that will require another bus bar, so flashlights and lanterns it is.:)

I also got the trailer jack attached.

I was hoping to buy a new one, but this one isn't broken and you know the old saying.;)

I plan on bolting a spare tire on the trailer as well, since we plan on taking the boat on some long trips.

I have a matching Garmin GPS and fish finder to install.

They are both B&W screens, and will draw less electricity than color screens.

My theory is that the fish will be in full color once we get them in the net.

I am debating whether or not to install the speed wheel for the fish finder.

They are pretty much irrelevant due to the accuracy of GPS...so I shouldn't need it right?

I have heard on the contrary, that they are more accurate than GPS at trolling speeds.

Here are some photos of the actual boat, with the consoles bolted in at the gunwales.

I'm waiting on some of the bow pieces to get painted(ran out of paint) and we can get the rest done.

We had a party for Braden's 4th birthday last weekend so we've been busy.

He's in the background of the first photo, and is also ready to catch some fish on the Starcraft.:D

The blue PFD is over the ski locker since the kids play in the boat and like to jump in the ski locker.

I am glad they like the boat though!

For those of you who have been wondering, I did go fishing once last week.

Here's a shot of my fishing buddy with one of the black crappie we caught, trolling small rapalas.

Couple around 10.5" but the 6" bluegill fought harder than the rest.:D

Thanks for the tips FnM, sounds like a good plan.

Hopefully we can get a good bow cover and a canvas top with some clear vinyl windows.:)

And proved by Mike in the pic of his buddy holding what appears to be a colored fish. Or is that Photoshopped? :p

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I worked on the cable boot, grommet, or whatever you want to call it today.

Installing it required me to cut out the hole by about another 1/4"...which was challenging.

The angles were terrible from the outside(used a Craftsman jigsaw w/ metal blade) so I got in the boat and cut it from the inside.

I was able to get it cleaned up from the outside and it turned out great. No bare metal on the inside, perfect.:)

Now I can get the steering cable installed too. There is a zip tie built into the grommet that will cinch the works together and neaten things up.

We've been working on the helm dash panel too, and it's almost ready.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I like your thinking Mike

I thought you might agree:)

I'm starting to get pumped about catching some fish on this rig, and so are my two boys.

We are heading up north this weekend for some fun time. The word has it that the Atlantic Salmon fishing is great this year...and this is one rumor I'd like to prove true.

They are eating the gobies and flourishing, best news I've heard in a while:D

While Chinook are great for sport and the table, Atlantic love to jump out of the water and have a bit more character in my opinion.

After this short vacation I will be back to work of course.:D

And proved by Mike in the pic of his buddy holding what appears to be a colored fish. Or is that Photoshopped?

These Black Crappie are some nice looking fish. I do not have great Photoshop skills.:D

Might as well install it....that way you won't be wishing you had down the road...err...lake.

Really looks good Mike.

Thanks Deadwood, you are probably right.

I will be wondering if the GPS is accurate while trolling every time 10-15 minutes passes without a strike.:D

There's room and I have some 5200 laying around so I might as well.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

GPS should be very accurate in open water trolling situations,...

The paddle wheel is great if your fishing in river current, If your pulling plugs upstream the GPS will give you speed over water but it wont reflect the speed of the current moving under the boat,....So you speed over water will read way higher than the speed you want to be pulling cranks at, ..The paddle wheel will give you that speed,..
