Nice progress, every bit helps. I still don't get where spellcheck is, there was another whole thread about it. I use Firefox too.

HA, good to see you making progress between fishing trips. It would have to quit raining here for more than half an hour for me to even think about fishing, LOL.

Sometime just hanging those rods there gives you some motivation. I did the same with the Scotty rod holders. Made no sense to anybody else but I knew they were there to show the end is near.

Nice work on the clean machine.

Gotta love that Nautalex vinyl, makes clean up simple. Your coming along well. I like how roomy and neat it is. Got a pic of the Pike?

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

Thanks for the comments fellas, some encouragement just like the rods:D

Glad you folks understood why they were there. Having the motor ready to go helps a bunch too.:)

Speaking of which, I need a link arm for the steering cable/motor connection.

I found one on ebay that I bid on, so I hope it's the correct part.

Here is a short video I shot of my fishing buddy grabbing the Pike barehanded, since we forgot the net.

Warning!!! May contain offensive language.

Here is the link.

Great grab. I though the language would be from a bad grab. They have a nice face full of teeth :) Good to see you out on the water. Mine took waaay to long.

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

I went to my local Johnson dealer today and got the correct adapter for the fuel line on my 6 gallon tank.

It's a Mercury tank so it wouldn't work but the part and clamp were <$10 so no big deal.

The bad new is that the Marina did not have a key that worked on my controls, so I have a bit of a problem.:facepalm:

Apparently some people are dumb enough to buy a motor with no key and I'm one of those people.

Since I was able to easily get a replacement key for the '71 Merc I figured a '76 Johnson would be no big deal.

As it turns out, the area around the ignition switch that has the important number is chipped away so the number is not legible. I'm going to try another marina to see if someone's got a ring of keys to try out.

Here's the fuel line connected to the motor and ready to go.

I also got the bow stop swapped out for the original, and got the boat a bit more forward on the trailer.

Should be better this way since the motor is set back about 6".

I've been looking over the 70hp and it's in pretty good shape as far as I can tell.

I am considering getting new controls for this motor, since a new ignition switch is $75 from the marina.

I'm sure there are some cheaper online, and possibly controls as well.

Here's a look at the intake manifold with the choke in open and closed position.

Looks great HA! :) The boat looks to be just right on the trailer, how's your tongue weight now?

That 70 looks nice and clean like the rest of the package. Getting the motor on is a great mile stone. Keep up the good work man!

Thanks TII, tongue weight is better with the boat balanced more. It was getting a bit easy to lift once we bolted the motor on!

Thanks MP, I am glad to have the motor bolted on. Lacking a key is a rather small problem and should be fixed soon enough.:)

Problem solved HA http://compare.ebay.com/like/261031979091?var=lv&ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar&_lwgsi=y&cbt=y

Same part number as here which is correct: http://www.boat_s.net/parts/detail/brp/B-0386947.html (remove the underscore since iboats sucks)

Google "0386947 IGNITION" for more options.

Wow that is a good price on an ignition:D $15 is not bad at all compared to $75. Thanks for the link.

My shift cable should be replaced also, and I think they are around $20-30 but I'll check out what's available.

I spoke to a Johnson dealer in Hubbard Lake that says I can rifle through all of his old OMC keys if that's what suits me.:)

Hopefully I will get lucky like the time I lost the key for the Merc. We are headed up north again next weekend, so I will stop by on the way up friday morning.

At $5-10 that is the cheapest solution. The $15 ignition will be the second choice.

New controls are about $200 on ebay, and few and far between so that's gonna be option 3.

Tell me about it, I've been looking hard for about 2 weeks now. I just saw a totally trashed set sell for $150:rolleyes:

We have been busy, but I have a few updates that are overdue.:)

Here are a couple photos of the main pos and neg battery lines.

They are heat shrink rings and the connections seem to be good.

Just so you guys know what we've been up to besides working on the SS...this is a photo of my grandpa-in-law's farm pond.

We camped there last weekend and got it stocked with some locally caught Perch, Bluegill, and Sunfish.:)

Re: '79 Starcraft SS 16 restoration

We also got the bow stop swapped for the one that fits better.

Here is the heavier one that will be great for an Islander or 22' SS with a wider bow.:)

DSCF1099.jpg

This is the factory bow stop that worked fine. We do have the safety chain bolted on so it's ready to go.:D

DSCF1112.jpg

Here are a few products that will be put to use soon.:)

The weatherstripping roll is what we used under the windshield.

There is a thin attachment point between the two strips, so the square-headed bolts can be fed through a small spot and keep the rest sealed up well.

The teak oil is for the ski locker. It will look brand new again fairly easily.

The white lithium grease is for the steering cable and winch post. Not the best delivery method in my opinion, I feel like a tube of it would result in a neater, cleaner job.

Always good to see your progress. I like the safety chain & might put one on mine. I use a rope now. I have lots of chain but my issue is cutting it, I don't have any bolt cutters and just haven't gotten the ambition to hit it with the hack saw. Way better than rope though.

HA - Nice pond, are we invited? Maybe put and take.

Nice work on the boat, The bow stop looks good.

You might want to look at getting a strap to replace that rope. Hate to see a day ruined ( or worse the boat) when it breaks.
