Really no need for paint since aluminum is a self protecting metal..... up to you though ;)

The aluminum by the nature of the material will make its own protecting coat. The only need to paint it would be if the tank does not have a air space around it to let it dry out if it gets wet. The corrosion will only start if water gets trapped between the tank and any material against the tank and can not dry out.
If you don't have a good air flow around the tank I would definitely use a good etching primer and a good quality paint.

Sent the Mrs. to pick up some self etching Primer..
Store website said they had it...
Store computers showed 6 cans by SKU...
They couldn't find one can...

Here is my screen on the pickup tube...

Put some JB Weld on all the bad places...

Had to let that cure...
Need something to do...

I had asked a few weeks ago if I could add 2" to the back of my motor mounts...

Don't think I got any responses...

So I made some new ones...

I tried...read post above...
I do have some Valspar implement primer...Oil based..says it is for metal...think that will work?

Aluminum and brass are dissimilar metals and will eat each other over time, galvanic corrosion.

I thought they were...I also need to have an anti-siphon barb...will have to order one...I so want to start putting the deck in, but I don't want to rush this and cut corners...too much invested now to cu corners...

Nice work Troop !

Thanks FF!

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I may not be correct, but:

The original tank w/ steel reducer, brass elbow & brass barb didn't lead to much if any corrosion around the bung hole in the tank or the threads since the new elbow threaded into the bung w/ little or no difficulty, correct?

The yellow gas-proof teflon tape &/or pipe dope or whatever they used as a thread sealant, must have provided enough of a barrier to prevent the galvanic corrosion.

Does that ^^^ make sense?

If it doesn't, or if I'm wrong, it won't even be the 1st time today on either count.......

Motor mount part 'Deux' look great too. EDIT: SP beat me to it: Now you need to find a good use for the 1st set:D

Troop I thought I'd mention it now while you have the oportunity when designing the engine bay make sure you leave yourself enough room for future maintenance if it allows this will save you volumes of choice words in future days. I have spent the last few weeks rearranging my area by moving the trim pump and battery along with re-fabing the fuelpump line to carb with a pressure gauge around the valve cover instead of over it as well as re-routing the wiring harness to neaten things up a little. My little 4 banger leaves moderate room but is still crampped for wrenching I could imagine whats leaft with a v8 or v6 just thought I would mention it while you are at or around that point in re-construction. Oh yea never trust the store inventory on line I have gotten screwed every single time. 94 in Ohio today.

Ya JB, that makes sense. Threads were fine. You know if the anti-siphon requirement is needed on my boat? Also saw someone say that the inspection plate is a coast guard requirement too. I figure I can add the access plate later... and do the anti-siphon then...I just hate having to wait on the parts...because I really don't have much I can do but start putting the deck on...once I seal the tank...

SP...I vote wheel chocks...

Fanny...Without planning I do have about 4" in width...hence the remaking of the motor mounts...Pretty sure I added a couple inches in length too...

I'm thinking there will be a little more room...and yes you are right, it was very cramped when I was taking the motor out...

I heard it was a little warm up that way...and getting even warmer over the weekend...Hopefully we get a nice cool front to move in here...just sayin'.....

I don't know if it's required but, this also seems to make sense

I think I'd prefer my boating w/ no boom boom, know what I mean:eek: Except the don't come a knocking if the boats rock............

I got this from another iBoater:
Fuel_Tank_new.jpg

Although it may not be required to follow the 'new' post 1/2012 regulations as a backyard boat builder. Under deck fuel isn't somewhere I'd like to go anywhere near the questionable neighborhood side of the tracks. I trust that in this regard, the guberment (US Coast Gaurd) is looking after my best interests.

I fully appreciate the hate to wait. My is resolved surfing iBoats & 'helping' to the best of my ability....

And on that note, I don't know of a USCG inspection plate requirement. But that certainly doesn't mean that there isn't one. I have to guess that you mean having access to the certification/inspection plate that is seen in your photo of the tank above. If there was no way for that 'sticker' plate to be seen before you pulled the deck, I don't see why it would need to be viewable now. But that's definitely IMHO:facepalm:

Yep, so get a tube of Tef Gel....

Guys around here use it all the time. It's messy, sticky stuff, but works. They should have some at the local marine supply.
Nice work, Troop, can't wait for the pics when you tab the deck in. Good luck, keep up the great craftmanship.

Thanks for the detailed info JB. I agree, I do need the anti-siphon. Don't want fuel in bottom of the boat.

Thanks for the tip RFN. Now that you mention the sticky mess...that may have been what was on the parts when I took them apart.

You and me both with can't wait for the deck tabbing :)

Not being anywhere near deciding if I want a permanent tank or portable in any of the derelict rigs @ my place:facepalm: I've never really looked at that graphic in much detail.

Now that I have, it has: (only if the tank fuel outlet is above the fuel inlet on the motor) under the anti-siphon valve in that rendering.

It is probably not required in your boat, sorry........... Sometimes it takes a few minutes for details to surface in the gray matter:facepalm:.....

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

As long as the rest of the fuel system (lines, filters, etc.) is above the top of the tank, no anti-siphon is needed. I would not install one unless it is absolutely needed. Those little valves have left many a boat stranded.
