Looks like you can just grind the bad out and lay new over. I'm unsure weather you need to cut the keyhole out first or not. I don't necessarily think you would need to.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy*******Rut-Row????????

Was there any wind at all yesterday during after layup? Or for quite a while after, as the resin kicked. Unless you slit the glass in the keyhole, it might have lofted in the wind. You may or may not have gotten enough resin or under/over rolled that edge, in what, less then 2" X 12" area, you marked in red.

Yep, repair it like you did the 'thin' areas on the hull after grinding back to well stuck resin & glass. Be careful not to 'skew' the keyhole parallelism & flatness around where the inside outdrive housing attaches to the interior transom.

When you layup the next full transom layers of glass, once it's adhered but before your final pass w/ the BB roller, slit the glass vertically & horizontally to give it less tension across the opening.

Hope it ^^^ helps, and all & all, it's a really small area of the overall transom area. So mission accomplished & keep it up:)

ok guys, I was ready to rip it out and start over ....will treat it as a repair. It was rather windy with a front moving in right after I laid this.

I'd bet that coupled w/ a little over rolled, under resin'd along that edge all had a 'hand' in it being loose.

That's the good part of glassing. You can always grind it out and start over.

Yeah, the good part:) grinding.... I spent 5+hrs sanding & wet sanding the G-3 cap today at work.... Yeah, what he said, the good part:facepalm:

If you've got time, the repair & next series of layups can all be done in 1 shot:D

1st Saturday update....

Got up early (5:30) to try and beat the heat. Ground out the delam area around the keyhole. Wanted to use a piece of plastic to mark out a template. Didn't have any....trip to store....

Got the template made..

Transferred to 2 sheets of CSM...

Acetone wipe..
150ml resin mixed....
Brushed on a wetting...
Laid the CSM...no bubbles..
Looking good on the inside..

Was thinking about doing the remaining CSM/1708 skin....but didn't want to jinx anything...waiting for this to cure before moving forward...

Hope you are all having a great restore day!

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

2nd Saturday update......

Transom has 2 layers of alternating CSM/1708!

Was a close one, was hitting 100 on my little thermometer, weatherman says low 90's.

Small batches for the CSM worked out good.

Started with small on the 1708 layup but, ended up with using one last big one to get it all wet out.

So far it looks good. Going to let it cook while I take a much needed shower and grab a bite to eat.

Then it is time to finish cutting stringers and bulkheads, make the fuel cell box and motor mounts.

I plan on using styrene to thin the resin whenit comes time to coat these pieces. Does 10% by volume on the resin sound about right? Aso, do I just use thin resin first, the come back after it cures to do the CSM layup on these parts? I won't be doing the resin till much later tonight or very early in the morning so I don't have to fight the heat with the resin.

Everyone must be busy today, not much posting :)

I don't think you need to (or should) thin the resin. Just treat each side of the pieces as a wet on wet glass layup. Wet out the plywood, let it tack up & lay down the CSM.

I think YD had a post @ thinning resins, and that it doesn't really improve penetration. If I can find the thread, I'll link it here..

EDIT: I had my Iboats guru's confused:facepalm:

It was ondarvr, & his posts to a thinning resin thread are here

Nice repair on the transom...should be ready for some 1708 when you get back to it...I was gonna mention not to sweat the minor disaster cause eventually you gotta make the relief cuts for the steering and eventually seal up the inner edge, which might require a bit of grinding/sanding... but at least it is ready for whatever comes next...

Progress is good, but fishin with kin is better, and catchin a nice keeper is priceless...mmmmm, Channel Cat, Tasty...way to go Troop...

3rd Saturday update...

Second skin of CSM/1708 is done...

I can live with it...Has one place a little thicker than the rest...will have to sand it down when it comes time to mount the motor...

Speaking of mounting the motor...
Gonna need these.....Made them a little tall so I can fit them in when the time comes...

Get your mower some suspenders, then it won't need a belt:facepalm: Sorry to hear it keeps throwing them.... No adjustments on the pulleys?

Nah, it has that variable speed pulley system on it. Just a tension pulley.

Yeah, this heat is brutal isn't it.... I got out there early, like you, to try to get out ahead of it... By 10:00 a.m., I was on T-shirt No. 3...

I am afraid its going to be a looooong summer here in the deep south...

As usual, the work looks great!

Hey, I know I could read back and find this, so forgive my laziness - what kind of power do you have in this thing (engine and drive)?
