You may want to skip 6 and 9 until you reach step 10. You might accidentally glass in WOG clamps! :D

Make sure and fill any/all voids if any in the edges of the ply with PB. Then Precoat with some slow set resin 1% MEKP. This will let it soak in as best it can. Once it gets tacky, roll on another thin laye of resin and then lay the mat and pour some resin on and roll it out from the center to the edges. Less is more!!! Just make sure it wets out and lays down then stop rollin. use the bubble roller at the last. You'll get the hang of it and be a pro in no time.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

OK folks this is going to be a long one, might want to grab a beverage

Decker- what you said, coming from someone with your mad skills...Thank you , but I don't feel I deserve it.

GT1M - You nailed it ...I was doubting myself the whole time...but I got it done.

SP - Too late...I already had 2..but they were the tiny ones, so might only count as one, depending who is counting I guess ...but I didn't get it in the boat yet, so no clamps glassed this round, whew!

WoG - I didn't have any voids, maybe one little place 1/4" long so left it. I let the first layer of plain resin sit for a little, got kinda tacky and I laid the CSM down...forgot to put a thinlayer of resin down. For the most part it wet out real good. I ran out and had to make a small 100 ml batch, but it came out looking good to me. No bubbles that I saw.

Mixing 750 ml with 7.5 ml mekp. Backup 750 ml just in case I needed it (thanks JB)

Stir for 1 minute...

Brushing the first coat on...

Tried rolling with a foam roller I had, didn't work. Will have the right rollers tomorrow...BB worked ok, but the chip brush moved it good...note the pair of gloves on the ground, wore 5 pr, peeled them as needed...great tip JB!
DSC00960.jpg

I think it looks pretty good for the first time ever...I was too nervous to spend time shredding the edges. Will fix that tomorrow on side 2. I had plenty of time left...I even had to make a 2nd batch about 100ml...still had time left on the 20 minute timer...

Who could I be talking to on the phone?
Hint: he likes 99, hasn't been the same since seeing R.W. in a loin cloth.....

Gus! Was great getting to talk with you. I really appreciate you taking the time to help out. I can use all the advice I can get.

Again everyone, thanks for the help and support.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Thanks for the kudos everyone. I am pretty stoked, can't sleep thinking about what is in store for tomorrow!

Early visit to get some supplies. Then back to finish the other side of transom. Couple dry runs checking the fit. Big batch of pb to glue it in. Then some filleting and tabbing. Finish up with the final layers of 1708. Who knows, I may have time to start cutting the stringers/bulkheads.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Making some progress today...

Made a trip to Lowes..picked up two sheets of 1/2 Araucoply...
Cut them into 12"x12" pieces to put on the sides..and got me a new drill. the Dewalt IO had was only lasting 10 mins per charge.
DSC00967.jpg

Found this in the cement section. for grout, I removed the metal tip, will cut a larger hole....see if it works for laying PB.
DSC00968.jpg

Prepped for 2nd side of CSM.

I couldn't resist putting something on here. 1,000 years, too much???/
DSC00969.jpg

I used 750ml and 100ml yesterday. So today thought I would go with a little more.

Poured 1,000 ml and stirred in a smidgeon over 10ml of catalyst...
Set the timer for 20 minutes. I had 2 layers of resin, put down the CSM. Wet it out everywhere but the overhang. Started ripping this with my fingers, just breaking it up so it would lay down.
Half way around wetting the sides, in 2 dips of the roller I went from liquid resin to gel. 10 secs later I had this hot heard blob.
temps have been around 82-84 today, I was working in the shade. I get what you all mean that it cooks quicker when you have more. I still had about 6 mins left on my 20. Next time I will just have a second batch ready if needed.
DSC00970.jpg

Letting this cure. Will clean up the sharp edges and bumps. then time to start test fitting in the hull. If things go as planned I should have it in the boat tonight!!

Wow! that's a lot of squares to round over and resin and CSM and PB and, and...

Love the 1000 year time capsule, but I think you are selling yourself short, I would go for a cool million...:D

Very interesting idea getting a grout pastry bag...let me know how that works...I am still kinda trying to figure out a good way to do this...I have tried the ziplock with the corner cut pastry bag, not too easy to work with due to needing both hands to control it while needing one hand to balance myself in the hull......been just using the stir stick to dump globs of it out, then spread it a bit with a bondo spreader, sort of finish it up with my fingers, then when I lay on the CSM tabbing, I wet it with plain resin and kinda reshape it some while laying and wetting out the CSM...somewhat awkward, but its working...haven't really liked using the spoon dipped in mineral spirits or acetone, but I am still working out the kinks...
Decker83 seems to have this down to an art form, his stuff looks like its been done by a robot...

Yep, the more resin you mix at one time the hotter it gets and the faster it kicks...sometimes it will even catch on fire...

I have to do some research on thie brand of the blue gloves, but as soon as I find out I'll let you know...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

You may only get 1 use out of that mortar bag, or a few, but you'll burn time & acetone getting it cleaned & keeping it pliable. The inside of the bag is textured cloth of some sort. It will probably hold kicking PB....

Same principle, but use a gallon zip-lock bag, heaviest freezer type you can find. I seem to remember there being a 'double' or 'triple' thickness ad for zip-lock freezer bags. Cut a 3/4" X 3/4" corner off the bag, fill w// PB, use it like the pastery mortar bag, and throw away after each 'cycle' of PB run through it. Mixing 750ml of PB, you'd probably only put 1/3-1/2 of it in the bag each time you fill up.....

Ya, that is why I wanted to coat/resin/csm the sheets before cutting them up.

I never got around to trying the bag out...the bondo blade worked good.

JB, the inside of this one is vulcanised rubber, real slick looking. That was only reason I got it. Only $% if it doesn't work out so no big loss. I really wanted to try it out, but found it just as easy to use the bondo spreader.

I may still try to use it on the stringers.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I actually got the transom glued in with PB. Little trial and error with the proper mix. I let it set and took a good swift kick to it, no fillets or tabbing had been done yet. The thing didn't budge! Let's get to doing some fillets.
DSC00971.jpg

Holy cow! Hot in here...See that Max 116 for the day? I decided to pull the top back to let it cool down a little before doing the fillets.
DSC00972.jpg

Still trial and erring..But I got it figured out and was happy with the results.
DSC00973.jpg

Little after dark, so pic isn't the greatest....but there is a layer of CSM and 1708 tabbing ...woohoo!
DSC00974.jpg

I even managed to get the weak spot in the floor fixed. Small section of CSM/1708 followed by a larger section of same. I think it will do.
DSC00975.jpg

What a day, I am spent!

On the agenda for tomorrow.....

Stringers and bulkheads....if time permits then the motor mounts. I am doing a redesign in that area. I did not like the idea of using LAG bolts to hold down a V-8. I will building boxes and using bolts with Locking/Lock nuts.

Had a blast today. Hope everyone else did too!

GT maybe mother nature will let you do a little tomorrow? You could go get another mess of fish...sounds good.

Not so sure about pro looking, you need to see it in daylight up close. Really doesnt look too bad though. Couple of places with air, i was having trouble with the BB sticking to the resin. Those rollers that WoG had me use worked great, also got most of the bubbles out.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Relaxing a little this morning. Yesterday was a tough 14 hours or so. Sitting outside listening to the birds, thinking. I've got this pile of 12"x12" blocks next to me. I am having a hard ti econvincing myself that theyare required. I really think they were used only to staple carpet in. The hull is actually thicker where they were mounted. I will not be stapling carpet, tabbing on the sole will go in this area also which will add strength.

Thoughts?

Think the plan for today is to go slow. There are a few places in bottom of hull that need repaired. Will get that done then start measuring for the stringers and bulkheads. There are also a few places on transom I want to beef up with wood, through hull penetrations that need a good backing.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I was kinda scratchin my head wondering what the 1/2 ply squares were for.. If your not going carpet you might not have to put them back unless it's needed structurally but later on if you decide to go carpet at least they will be in there. Maybe some of the pro's will chime in on it..
