Brutha Troop,

First, man I'm so sorry for the loss of your buddy...

Well it looks like your gearin up for total glassin domination, and possibly being a part time weather forecaster!

I bought the same monster bag of cabasil, looks like we should have split one! I was however surprised how much I used to make PB...

peace man!

Thanks bear.

I am getting ready for it, can't wait to get started.
How did you open and close the bag? I don't want to have it all over the place.

Looks like you or ready to start glassing now!!!!
You will use twice as much cabasil for the same amount of resin. It is a super fine power and very light.
Don't use it in the wind, it blows everywhere.
Looking forward to seeing some glass work.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Getting ready to do some final grinding. Thought I was done but after a good cleaning I see some spots I missed.

Have a question I hope someone will answer tonight while I am out there....

This is right in the bottom of the V in the hull between the bilge area and the gas tank compartment. Looks oily...glass is separated....Do I need to grind on this any more or let it go?

Should I grind till almost through the hull if necessary then, glass it in from inside then finish the repair from the outside when I flip her?

Any help is appreciated. I'll be out in the boat, but the MRS. said she will look to see if I get an answer.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

To me it looks like there might have been an area that didn't get well 'compressed' and left a void that you exposed when grinding. Not unlike a void in plywood that you can't see until you cut into it. Dirt, grime, oil, &/or gas all mixed with water in the bilge and it made it's way into the void.

I'd at least give it a few swipes w/ the grinder while your out there using it already....... Esp if you are going to be running the new glass & poly anywhere near it. If you can stop before or at least when you get to the back side of the gelcoat, you shouldn't have to make any additional repairs on the exterior, just on the inside: CSM, 1708, CSM, 1708 and maybe a 3rd layer of each if you think it needs it for structural support.

You might wait to see if a guru swings by & gives you similar advice..... Or different advice:facepalm:

Congrats on the pending put back! Nice!!

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Thanks for the insight JB. I had hit that spot to the point I thought I would go through earlier in the year. Tonight I do as you suggested, a few swipes and it is gone!

I do however have another situation...

This is the side where the deck will be tabbed in. All along I thought this was balsa-core behind a thin layer of CSM.

This is also the remainder of my grinding I wanted to finish tonight. Well....as I was starting the second side I noticed that the CSM was giving way under the weight of pressure I was applying for the grinder. Not a whole lot of pressure mind you. I knew this would not be good when it came time to tab the deck down. So.... I cut it out with the sanding disk to see what I was up against.

What do I find??????

1/8" foam!!! I think I know the answer before asking....but this will all need to come out so I am tabbing the deck to the hull, right?

Gotta love the little set backs :)

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Perplexing.....

Is there any moisture in the piece you took out or what you can touch thru the cut hole?

It appears to be something they placed into 1 of the hull's hard chines during fabrication. Made that way as a structural girder(??), so perhaps not bad, unless it's wet:eek:

Then, well, you know...... it's bad gumbo.

But if not wet, probably do a few smallinspection ports in a few locations on each side. No wet, no need to remove, it's been dry since 1978, so in another 34+yrs.... I'd just CSM & 1708 over it to strengthen it & roll w/ stringers & tabbing! I suspect it was giving under the weight of the grinder & pressure, because you'd removed some of the glass over it during stringer removal or put back prep.

Again, I can only suppose & suggest..... Pending guru sign off...

BTW, we are pending catahoula pick up again this weekend. <<<--- I know kind of an SC pickup type thread:facepalm::facepalm:

I completely agree with with JC...if after a few inspection holes everything seems dry...seal it up and continue forward:D...if an unfortunate turn, and it seems wet...well you know the answer to that...

Here's hoping for the better...

Just when you think the hull is all nice and clean, ready for glass/strings/deck....

Gremlins!!!

OK, really it was me...took out that side area, turns out the front and rear sections are foam, the middle is plywood.

Good thing I took it out, so far all of it was wet...

Almost....

I still need to check the front seat area. I had plans to remove it but changed my mind. Think it will be needed now. I want to be sure ALL the cancer is gone from this thing. That is the only place left for it to hide.

There's no place like home, there's no place like home...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I suspect you will need to replace that foam girder w/ something... Maybe wrap a piece of plywood & PB/PL it to the hull & cover w/ resin & glass. Similar to the middle section that was already ply.... Fab your own foam girder out of pink/blue HD insulation?

It has a purpose, formed with the waffle texture/pattern...

Good thought for the bow area seating, better now then, well..........

So close, just not yet. I hear you're getting more supplies this week, congrats!
