Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Troop,

I lost my Best Friend Two years ago. I've never really gotten over it. My heart goes out to you! Stay strong and with time it will get better. Remember Frisco did all of his outstanding work with the cap on. With I/O's it's possible to do.

Thanks Wood, you are right, it will never get easy.....

As for pulling the cap, I like the idea of not laying on my back to get the wood in tip/top shape...putting in wiring etc...Might not be worth the effort, I still have a ways before I make final decision on that one.

BTW Troop,

Thoughts and prayers to your friends Family and to you and yours in this sad time...

I have lost many friends, some very young, all the others, way too soon...

Last few years, a lot of my Family has passed on...

For what it's worth, I always console myself knowing that their souls are up there, somewhere, smiling kindly upon the rest of us left behind and waiting for the time when we can all reunite...

Thanks for the everything GT, as always you just shine....

You really remind me alot of him too btw.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Trooper, truly sorry about your friend. Echoing what others said above...

ON your boat, I think I am going to do the exact same thing. I will be able to get my stringers and deck back in without pulling the cap. That way, it will be fitted nice and true with the cap still on (no worries later)... Then, I am going to take the cap off (my rub rail needs to be completely replaced anyway). This will make it easier to flip to do some fairing and painting that I am going to do. I could probably do my whole job with the cap on, but I just can't stomach the thought of doing all that bottom work upside down... I probably won't add the foam until I flip it back right-side-up just to make it lighter for the flip... Sounds like you are thinking about doing something similar... Sorry for the brief hijack, just wanted to let you know that it sounds like we are planning a similar process..

Thanks, I do appreciate it

No worries about hijacking, I didn't take it that way at all. You are correct, we are thinking alike....not the spring chicken I used to be, so anything I can do to make it easier, I am all for it.

Not anything documented on paper just yet. Should be able to get materials ordered this week or next. Then get started on the glassing and wood going in. Then i'll flip it t oget the bottom fixed up. I have been pondering what tools to use when it comes time to fair the outer hull. I guess you rough it in with a orbital sander, but won't I need some kind of board type deal to keep things flat? Not sure the technical name for it. Hoping that with the two gantries the flip will go without incident.

I forget if you have a Harbor freight nearby, but if you do, look into a Straight-line Sander...just make sure your compressor can run it without running itself ragged...

here's a link... http://www.harborfreight.com/2-3-4-quarter-inch-x-15-3-4-quarter-inch-air-inline-sander-91773.html...

These work great to keep an area flat although the noise and vibration take some getting used to...

Don't forget the sandpaper that goes with it and keep it oiled up with air tool oil...also, right after you oil it, run it for a few moments to shake all the excess oil out of it away from your work surface...wouldn't want to contaminate it with oil...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

OK folks, need some advice. Making my order before my trip for Memorial services.

The Supplier/Distributor I am looking at using has proposed the following.

They have some 8LB foam that is on the verge of going bad. They said they would make me a deal on it. I am not sure that 8LB is advisable, looking for your input.

They only sell MEKP by the gallon...too much? Same with Wax Solution and Speed Patch patch aid by the gallon.
I think I may go with a full roll of 1.5oz CSM, will be real cheap. But I don't think I need a whole roll of 1708. If I did get the full roll maybe I could resell the remainder?

10LB Cabosil too much?

1 Gal Gel coat? I plan on using the Gel coat in Bilge, gas tank area, ski locker, deck, and maybe the outside of hull. (Standard white)

Yeah, I hear ya, but if you need an answer, quick.....

EDIT: I had the foam inversely listed, 8lb is MORE dense then 4lb, much firmer, and weighs twice as much in a given foam filled volume as 4lb does. The below has been changed to be more accurate:

8lb pour in foam is twice as dense in a 12"X12"X12" foam filled volume then 4lb. It weighs 8lbs per expanded cubic foot. It may not be what your looking for to replace what was removed. It is twice as heavy & may not be ideal no matter how 'good' a deal they make you.

Sorry for the error:)
--------------------------------------------------------End of edit-----------------------------------------

Travel safe in the am, and hope they'll get you some answers while your gone. Maybe you can honor your friend in some way in the rebuild or re-outfit of the boat while you work on it. Maybe a tribute @ the transom before poly & glass, GT1M style:cool:

OK Troop,

First off, safe travels...

Second, now you got me thinking, and we all know that is a bad thing...
The following calculations are solely based on my personal experiences, so far, with the products and in absolutely NO way can be considered scientific, 100% correct or even possibly based in fact...just some observations on my part...remember, I wear glasses...

8 Lb. Foam...About to go bad?...how long before you are ready to use?...Very Dense, expands only about 1/4 as much as 2Lb. so you would need approximately 3-4 times as much to fill the same sized cavity, although I can't say with certainty whether the bouyancy factors are outweighed by the volume, you may only need to use only about 1/4 as much as 2 Lb... Have to research some more...

Mekp...1 gallon = 3785.41178 Millileters, at 2% usage = approximately 75 ml per gallon of resin...should be enough for about 50 gallons of resin...if my math is correct...

CSM, full roll, usually sold by the pound, generally yields about 25-30 yards according to my supplier...
1708, not sure, but that sounds like about the same, and I think that would be way too much and quite expensive, weight-wise and size-wise to ship???...but I am interested to see and read what others think...

The other two chemicals, Speed Patch and Wax, I have ZERO experience with, but I have read some where that you use very little wax additive in the final coat...Quite possibly in oops! knowledge base...

Cabosil, 10 Lb....hmmmm, tough one, based on actual product weight or volume?...the container I bought is about the size of a gallon, yet the container seems to weigh more than the Cabosil inside...so call it about 8 oz. total, container + Cabosil...I am guess-timating, based on my current usage, that I might end up using 3-5 of these for the entire boat, so, 1.5-2.5 Lbs Minus the weight of the containers @ roughly half the total weight, I get about 1.5 lbs. of actual cabosil and I am doing a lot of PB, eventually...
If the price is right, on this I would go for it...doesn't go bad as long as it stays dry, and if you pack it in a good plastic bag, box it up, the shipping may not cost too much more, and the left over can be sold off...
As far as price, I am paying about 8 bucks per tub, so if I use the previously mentioned 5 tubs, it would come out to about 40 bucks for about 2 pounds of actual product...

And finally, the Gel-coat...I know next to nothing about GC, but I do know that most Gallons of Paint-type products can cover as little as 100 square feet for thick stuff, to over 300 square feet for thinner stuff...

One final word of caution...if the supplier is having a hard time moving some of these materials, I would try and double check who they sell to and ask around because they may have great prices on old merchandise, and that could compromise the freshness of the poly resin...just saying;)

Hope some of this helps...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Thanks for the detailed info GT!

Had a good nights sleep and think that I will use your advice. 8/lb foam, wrong to use...Gal MEKP..not happening...Looks like the CSM I will go with, and resin, Cabosil too. Like you I have alot of PB to make.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

8lb foam specs from 1 supplier:
8 LB Density Urethane Foam
Common Applications: This 8LB density foam is extremely hard and rigid, like that of a soft wood. Your fingernail can penetrate its skin, however it cannot be dented by hand. Uses include casting, carving, sculpting, sign making as well as areas where an extremely durable and rigid foam is needed for support. More questions?

Cat No. Kit Size(net weight) Approx. Coverage Price
FOAM-0804 4 LB Kit 1/2 Cubic Foot $XX50
FOAM-0816 16 LB Kit 2 Cubic Feet $XX.00
FOAM-0880 80 LB Kit 10 Cubic Feet $XXX.00

Turns out I was wrong, I had the 2lb~4lb~8lb calc backwards, 8lb is much denser & probably much firmer then you'd want. when it expands, it's twice as heavy for a given volume as 4lb. For 10Cubic ft, that would 'only' be 40lbs more weight then the 4lb, but how much do you need?

I also agree w/ GT, aged resin based supplies may not be a great cost savings.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Absolutely do NOT get 8lb Foam.
Resin last if its in a cool dry place, it's the MEKP that goes bad. Be careful.
10lbs of Cabosil will last you for the next 5 boat rebuilds.
A roll of 1708 for the next 3 boats.
CSM You'll have 1/4 of a roll left over.

Ya, not going with the 8/lb, too dense.
The resin is good, will order the MEKP elsewhere, don't need a gallon.
I can get 10lb of cabosil for ~ same price of what I need, this way I won't run out.
Not going with a roll of 1708...will just buy what I need.
I have some other uses for the CSM maybe, and the cost is too good to pass up.

Thanks for the input!

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Picked up a few items before trip this morning.
Is that a big bag of Cabosil or what? lol, I had no idea it was going to be that much!
Full roll of 1.oz 50" CSM. 2 Part foam...5 gal, and 5 gal of Acetone.
Oh ya, 3 buckets of poly....
DSC00940.jpg

I had planned on 1/2" for the deck they didn't have enough local so I ended up with 3/4", I thought the added stiffness was worth the added weight.
DSC00941.jpg

Timer....so I know I mix long enough, and also How much time I have before the mix starts to set. Couple of thermometers, one with Humidity% so I can properly mix the MEKP. Is this the right type of roller for resin and Gel Coatin'?
DSC00942.jpg

Should be able to get started next weekend....Can't wait!!!!
