Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Hey Troop,
Just wanted to say I dig your new digs and that every time you mention the temp's there I get even happier to be here in Georgia. Unfortunately I can't tell you anything about your gel coat but I did want to give you some advice about quitting smoking. (Yeah I know you mentioned it in passing months ago but I just recently read through your thread in a gotta catch up binge so for me it happened like yesterday.) As someone who kicked a three pack a day habit two years ago I can tell you it's sooooooo worth it. Not only do I save a ton of $$$ but I get sick way less. If you decide to take the plunge just know the first three weeks SUCK so have plenty of work to do on hand as anytime you aren't working you'll be thinking of smoking. Once your past the first few weeks things level out. After about a year you won't think of yourself as a quitter but as a non smoker and after two years the urge to burn one will pop up very rarely and then in a kind of a pleasant "used to be I'd have burned one right about now." kinda way. Hope that wasn't too preachy or anything just thought I'd share.

Thanks Kenneth..I'm digging the new digs too....and I remember how much I miss being south everytime I post those temps :(

as for the quittiing...don't mind the pep talk at all...realyneed to just do it...did it once cold turkey, so know I can do it again...just need to be in the right frame of mind....and almost there...better do it sooner than later though....

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Hey Troop,
Just spoke with Steve at US Composites...here's the scoop...

1708 should be fine after drying out since the CSM that's on the back side is so thin...
On the 1.5OZ. CSM, he said that if after it has dried out, it is NOT all crumbly and falling apart, and it feels "normal" {soft and pliable} it should be good to go...if, however, it is all crumbly and falling apart, you can use it as a filler, if needed...
Basically it boils down to the starch that is used to hold it together...when it gets wet, the starch breaks down and no longer helps to bind the material together...

Hope this helps...

Troop, SOOOOOO glad you are getting settled in your new home. Looks like your garage is a great work area. If you want to try and salvage the wet glass go to WalMart and buy a cheap Iron. Get a couple of beach towels lay em on some ply wood and Iron the Glass. Cut out a small piece and glass it to some wood and see what happens.

Thanks Wood...I am still pinching myself once in awhile..to see if it is for real :)

There was an iron left in the garage..I'll give that a try...that 1708 is flimsy in the cetner...like it is broke...we'll see...

Troop,

I have been following your great adventure and my admiration for carrying through. When you see so many of the good guys following and offering best wishes and advise, then for me that is about as good as it can get here on Iboats. But you know that !

I have a question though that has started bugging me. We all get glimpses into everyones life and I somehow just put you into a niche with your signature....Trooper with the 82nd AB but whether right or wrong that's just me. Recently you threw that ole sweeping curve and mentioned Army and Alaska........Just not sure 82nd deployed there but curiosity has got me, nothing more.

Hang in there. As you may remember from the way back, only the boys up North know how to enjoy a beautiful spring, summer, fall because we put up with the ..................

Howdy Streetgang, Welcome aboard!

You are absolutely correct. I served 2 years in Ft. Bragg, NC in the 82nd Airborne. B 1/320th FA from '82-'84 to be exact. I am a second generation paratrooper to boot. My father served in the 82nd in the late 50's. I grew up listening to stories of jumps that had gone wrong, and ended up having a few of my own stories to tell. I spent the last 2 years of my active duty in Ft. Wainwright, AK. C 1/37th FA. Good times in both places... Yesterday was my 27th anniversary for enlisting...doesn't seem like that long ago though...

I am looking forward to having a Northern spring...kinda getting aclimated to winter so far...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

When coworkers were helping me unload the uhaul in storage...before house purchase was finalized....they were teasing me about the fact that they sell dimensional and plywood up here in PA...I took every last little scrap of leftovers I had when working on the boat last summer....

Took those scraps...along with one of the sides from the cabinet previous owners left in the garage...added some glue and a handful of screws...and came up with this...

pieces cut and ready for assembly...

frame put together..glue blocks bradded down...

top screwed to the frame...

legs and tension members in place...

Not bad for an afternoon of playing around in the garage...

Though this was not direct boat related..it will benefit the boat...I can now put some items away on this and be that much closer to being able to reach the boat :)

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!!

Nice table!

Did the glass rack table make the move?

Hey Troop,
Been awhile since I posted to your thread. Glad to see the move was a success.
The garage is down right amazing.. I would love to have one like yours...
Sorry to hear about the csm and 1708. I have had some 1708 get wet and after it dried out it was fine.
I did have to unroll it before it would dry out...
The sanding you have done looks good so far..

The work table will be a big plus and the table for the chop saw will always come in handy. Great job...
Have a great week..

Sweet! Sewing machines in the man cave. Who'd of thunk that'd be a good thing?

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I hope you all do not consider this a derail....it goes towards the final product with the boat....

Took some time this evening to take a closer look at the Singer 78-3...
When I went and looked at it the other night, they plugged it in and let it run...made some noise in the clutch area, but the inner workings of the machine sounded real good...could tell it needed some oiling, but otherwise sounded good. So I took the motor and clutch assembly apart...

And cleaned them up a little...replaced the friction break...they use the same size leather as the belt to do this...
DSCF0334.jpg

The motor looks like an old washing machine motor to me...wires did not look to trust worthy...see pic...
DSCF0335.jpg

I'll work on that this weekend...along with getting the switch and cord replaced.

The only thing worn on this machine is the bushings on the clutch assembly...should be able to find some replacements for them...

I gave the head a good going over...no slop anywhere..I'm guessing the man that owned this bought it new. He ran a part time business from his basement. The daughter was telling me about the 1972 flood. I can tell the White rotary got wet. The Singer does not appear to have been. Although inside the casting there is some dirt or grease one, cant really tell. Regardless this thing is dead silent when turned. no wear anywhere that I can see...extra friction plates for the thread tensioner and several different feet. Did I mention this is an early walking foot machine? No feed dogs....no reverse...no markings to know how many stitches per inch it is feeding...but I love it anyway. it should be a 1950 or newer model...have not found a serial number on it yet to find out when it was made....I am really impressed with how well it was machined..built really well...I'll get some pics up this weeekend of the disassembly and cleaning...

Tomorrow is Friday!!! enjoy the weekend all!

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

That Singer looks to be in a commercial table & seems to have a really long neck(throat? arm?) to the sewing head, so maybe a commercial machine too?

Nice work getting it pulled apart and checked over!
