Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Speaking of gelin'..taking a break and got time to post some thoughts...when it comes time to do the gell on the hull...got some questions...

1.How many coats am I going to need?
2. If more than 1 ( I assume 3 or 4) all wet on wet...not fully cured?
3. How the heck am I going to do that?

I can't reach the keel from the ground, so was thinking I will do what I can from above then down to ground to get the sides..but then I need to get back on top to do the other layers...if still wet that ain't gonna happen...

Just looking for some logistical advice...

Does it have to be wet on wet ? Maybe some kind of temp scaffolding across the gantry . With no go go gadget arms not sure what you can do .. Someone will chime in with a good plan ..

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Did oops post details of how he shot the stretched hull? That was gel wasn't it? Or because the chine is likely to take some abuse, and is a 'hard' corner. Shoot chine to chine 1st in multiple coats, with the sides masked. Then shoot the sides multiple coats w/ the hull bottom masked. The chines get shot in both sessions.. May even be able to mask off in stages, shoot 1 coat, pull some masking, shoot a 2nd &, & , &..... Then the masked layers help feather the edge...... But that's all based on needing to do wet on wet coats..... And a best guess...

Carp........... DUDE just jumped from 128000+/- ft for RedBull.... CARP & just broke the sound barrier in freefall.... 729mph

Carp, wings, heck, HUGE stones too......

Troop a couple of 12' step ladders and 2 2x12 across the steps make for a good movable scaffold used this a few times painting my family room cieling (15' ceiling) just a thought. Hulls looking better each time I see it.

Looking good Troop. I about made myself crazy filling and fairing my hull. I finally had to say good enough and the fish would be the only ones to see it. I'll be watching and learning with you on the Gel coat process. I really think the cap on mine should be gel coated for the durability.

It'll be $35-50 shipping, but if it'll sew multiple layers of marine vinyl it's worth the $. Who's the las vegas boater? He might grab it & ship it....

Thanks CW...I am just about there.....deciding it is good enough...

This is a FANTASTIC Buy. Not sure what shipping would be but... GREAT machine. If you could get it to your house for under $175 it might be worth it.

I know some one in that area that might be able to ship it for me...will have to check into it....

Ebko gelcoat rotisary ! LMAO !!

I bet I could rig some ropes to hold it on one side then the next....

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

The hull is looking fantastic. Looks better than new from the factory. What a tremendous amout of work you have put into it.
As far as the gel coat, you will need at least 2 coats. The 1st coat without any wax. The 2nd coat with the wax. You should spray the gel at least 30 mil to 35 mil thick. I think you need to let the 1st coat set up and then wait a few hours and shoot the next coat. As you know the gell without wax dosn't set hard like the resin so I don't think it makes a big differance in how long you wait to shoot the second coat so long as it dosn't try to sag on the 2nd coat.
I would think you are going to need some scaffolds setup. They need to be easy to get up and down on. Depending on what you use to spray the gel with, you will need to be able to clean the equipment quickly before the gel kicks. Put up some temporay sawhorse's with 2x12's so you can move them out of the way when you shoot the lower part of the hull.
Just my 2 cents...
Have a good week.
