Looks great, you did a great job. Was the keel guard on the boat, or did you install it?

I just put the keel guard on this morning. Looks like it will do a good job. I got a 7' long one and it just missed my keel rollers on the trailer.

Started on my 2" aluminium tube swim platform... About 80" wide and about 24" deep. Not sure yet what the deck will be.... Maybe plastic deck.... Maybe aluminum oval tubing. Might paint it... Might polish it?

I'd recommend making a Mould out of Melamine and then wax it and PVA it and then pour gelcoat and Lots of CSM to make a fiberglass platform Pretty easy to do and would last forever with lots of strength. If you're interested I'd be glad to help you with more details and techniques.

Thanks wog, but for the moment I am still thing about some kind of store bought plastic/composite decking or aluminum. I am making this similar to some custom swim platforms I found on-line that are being made for lots of the cigarette type boats. I may eventually build my own wake tower out of the same tubular aluminum so this is practice for that lol. I guess I can change my mind anytime though and still end up decking it with something like you mentioned.

Got my swim platform frame tig welded up minus the cross bracing for a test fit. It will have to attach to the kickout portions of the back of the boat just below the rub rail. These bulged out portions are just really thin fiberglass so I had to get inside and grind them a bit then I layed up 10 layers of 17 oz cloth which gives me about 5/16" total thickness now. After kciking around a bunch of ideas on how to mount the tube to this area, I have decided on using 4 saddle type joints (2 on each side). I made up a test joint using a 2" hole saw to cut through a piece of 2" plastic then drilled a hole for the bolt through a scrap of 2" aluminum tube. These will mount through my fiberglass and I will also add 1/2" ply wood backing plates on the back side. My test piece is only a 1/4" bolt, but I intend to use 5/16" stainless socket head cap screws.

I also ordered some heim joints to attach two diagonal braces to the lower transom (these will be through bolted with 5200 sealant after first epoxying the holes).

This afternoon I am going to a local plastic supplier to look at a piece of 3/4" Starboard type material he has in stock. If it looks good, that is what I will use for the deck of the swim platform and it will be mounted so the top surface is about 1/4" recessed in the 2" aluminum tubular frame.

Hope it turns out nice.

Nice Tim!

Ive heard that you want to layer CSM between layers of Cloth but I'm not 100% sure.. Either way I dont think you have anything to worry about since it was extra strength anyways! Just testing my knowledge.

Platform looks really good, TIG is tricky, I always had better luck with MIG, but you can get some really clean beads from TIG. You clearly know what you're doing! Cant wait to see it with the deck on it!

CSM is not typically used with epoxy and definitely not required. My 17 oz biaxial cloth measured about .020" thick per layer dry. The existing glass was about .070"-.090" thick. I now am probably at about .270" - .290" thick. Plus I will have a plywood back plate bonded to that.... Should be OK.

AH! Didn't catch that you were using Epoxy. yea you're good in that case. Poly requires the CSM. My apologies.

That looks really nice! The inside of the transom area looks really beefed up; that should support the platform nicely.

I'm not that familiar with Starboard, so for my own edification: is it sufficiently strong that your platform (the tubular part shown in post #213 above) doesn't need cross-bracing to support the center?

You're doing some excellent work on this boat. I can't wait to see it finished!

It will have cross bracing.... I am just waiting for my new ladder so I can weld the cross members to align with the ladder also.

Got all my plastic saddles made (decided to do three per side). Fitted them to match hull then taped in place to the aluminum tube. Also traced their position to hull. Then I removed the frame back drilled it through the plastic. Next used a saddle as a drill bushing lined up to the traced marks on the hull and drilled my holes. Think I will now glue a 1/2 ply backing plate on the inside then drill that through tomorrow.

Looking great Tim! Have you thought about putting a thin skin on each side of the tubing with like 8 or 16lb foam inside? It would be really strong and nice and light... Just a thought.. I think thats how a lot of big rudders are made for fiberglass sailboats.
