Re: 1988 Sea Nymph GLS - 17'

Okay Guys:
Time for a little poll/survey. I am sort "at that point" where I need to decide my plans for this boat. My original goal was to convert this rig to a center console - pure fishing rig. If money were no object, that is what I would go out and buy (something like Bear's key west)...

If I am going to do the center console, I need to run some sub-deck channels (pvc, etc...) to run the ignition, steering cable, controls, electrical, etc... under the deck and back to the splashwell/motor area. The reason this comes up now is that doing so impacts my foam plans for the aft portion of the boat...

Honestly, I can see pros and cons to both... One downside is it will add to the cost and complexity of my build - have to buy new binnacle remote, buy or fab a center console (when I already have 2 good SS ones), and build the sub-deck channels into my foam plan...

So, with that being said, what say the masses? Something like this:

Or something like this...

Before I vote, can you do one thing for me?

Width measurements at midships, inside/outside the gunwale?

I kinda want to stand in my boat and pretend like there is a CC in there to see what it feels like, ya know?

Voted :)

Minimizing costs was 1 of the reasons to go tin...

Change up to CC may take more time, again a reason you went tin was to shorten the working on a boat time & get to using a boat sooner....

Even if a hardcore, all out fishing rig is the ideal, the SN may see duty as a family cruising rig, particularly w/ younger kids not up to an all day fishing trip. Although little man, the budding go-cart driver, might be to it....

Since it's the 'only' boat you own, might be better for the 1st (?to be finished?) to be general use, for now. Of course, having access to other boats at the lake you spend most of your time, might make this point irrelevant

No matter how you finish the 1st, it may not be exactly what you'll want a year or 2 from now

But hey, thats all just imho

Do what suits you.. BTW: Where's the battery going?

I,m kinda thinking like jbc ... I love the idea of a cc but you can boat the fish just as well with the 2 sides and prolly get it ready much faster and less costly . It also gives your passenger a place to get out the wind a little at wot ..;)
Just my 2 cents ..

The boat is 16' 3" transom to tip (I knew it wasn't a full 17'). Right at mid-ship - 8 feet (also appears to be the widest point) - its 68" inside the gunwales and 81" outside edge to outside edge.

Is he as good lookin in person?

Just wonderin:p:D

You know it - 6'3" of twisted steel and sex appeal... (or a nice pear shape)...

These are excellent points JBC - exact type of feedback I wanted... Thanks..

Personally I hate center consoles for fishing,.......Unless it's a 25 or 30 foot boat,......

I like to troll and there never seems to be enough room at the back of the boat with a center console,....

I would stick to the simple, easy, fastest to finish plan,....

OR,......If yous truly want a fishing machine,......

Wait for it,..........

Ahhh, Teamster, you crack me up!!!!:) You never miss an opportunity to win converts :)

Voted too.

PMC, go with the SS (or at least the SC). If you're spending most of the time on the water solo, you may like the CC*, but the minute anyone joins you, it will become a fire drill on that size boat. Plus, the ability for a passenger to have a wind break on a cold or rainy day far out weighs loss of space.
*I think you'll grow tired of dodging around the console.

If you still have the measurement, how wide was the walk-through between the consoles?

Uuummph...

OK, hang on just a sec. I need to go brush my teeth. I threw up in my mouth a little..........

OK, I'm back.

Dimension wise our boats are nearly identical broham. Mines at 16' and 81"/68". I'm certain your rig has more depth though.

So I stood in my SN this morning and was pretending to have a Center Console in there. I think you have plenty of room for one (well nothing huge anyway).

Now, function wise - I know down in your neck of the wood CC's are super popular. Why? Beats me but there has to be a good reason I'm sure. Up here, dual consoles are surely the mainstay and CC's are pretty rare. Why? Dunno. Weather/water differences is all I can guess.

For the build - I do think the CC would be a little more work and a little more coin invested, but I can't think by much on either of those aspects, so, I'd call it just about a wash.

You know what I was thinking this morning - you could use the two consoles that came out of the boat to build out one CC. I have an idea on how you could make that work and look purdy good. Pulling that off would save some time and cash.

Having the CC automatically eliminates one seat in your rig (assuming you will push it right up against the bow casting deck). Though you may not care about that.

Idunno man, I think I'm kinda 50/50. I don't think you can go wrong but I'm sure one setup has to be a little more right for ya.

Maybe post up your seating layout ideas? That may help the decision some.

Happy Monday:D

Re: 1988 Sea Nymph GLS - 17'

I went against the grain and voted CC,

Dodge a CC or slip through SC - seems a wash
Speed to done - still faster than a glass boat.
Protection from the weather - if you want out of the wind/rain either way you'll only get two covered.

Is it more thought than just slapping the SC's back on? Yep but if its what you truly want I say go for it. I agree with the guru(Jas) up there I don't see it being that much more $$ or time.

Umm, can you trim off the excess white space @ that diagram & make it bigger?

Battery & Livewells, & Bilge access is about all I could make out

This old confussed glasser likes what he sees. Great pics of you and Trooper.
With your young kids, I would make sure they have a place to sit in the boat.
When my 3 kids went out with me and the wife, they would get very restless and they needed their space.
Your work looks great.

Re: 1988 Sea Nymph GLS - 17 Foot

My nickle-95...

CC's are the cat's meow for a full blown, down and dirty, blood and guts fishing rig...and bigger is always better, as in longer and wider rig, especially if you are out in Big Water...

If that's what you are absolutely positive you are all about in this tub, then the extra work and moola will be a wise investment...

IF...however, you want a nice, all-around, family fun, some fishing, plenty of seating, maybe a "Jas" style casting deck rig, possibly Bimini Topped, slightly quicker to finish at lower cost, water toy, I would lean seriously to the Dual console/original style layout...:D

Have fun figuring it out...

Re: 1988 Sea Nymph GLS - 17'

Thanks for the input and witty banter... :)

After battling with photobucket, paintbrush and iphoto for a couple of hours, I think i have successfully "biggy sized" the jpeg above ^^^^. Hopefully this will give you a better glimpse, but its starting to becoming a moot point because, as of this present moment, I am leaning to a dual console. 2 reasons: the family-friendly comments resonate and make sense; and I don't want to try and make this boat something more than it is. Not firm, just leaning that way...

Thanks,
~PMC
