Re: 1988 Sea Nymph GLS - 17 Foot

I think a couple layers of csm/1708 on the inside skin will help build it back up from the corrosion. It would give it some added strength as well :D

:D... thankfully that's not the case.

All those grey spots on the transom are JB Weld? Wow, looks like you need to got ahold of 1 of those Man-sized sets of JB from B2....

Have a good week!

Yep, that's JB Weld slathered all over the transom... (and I'm only about 1/2 way done)... A lot of little corrosion potholes to fill in. That was 2 of the smaller packages. I have since visited my local Autozone and purchased the "industrial size" tubes.

PMC - Looks like it's coming along real nice. I didn't like the "Great Lakes Special" decals on my GLS either. Like you, one of the first things I did to mine was to remove the GLS decals. I felt the GLS claim was a bit pretentious for a 17' boat anyway.

Couldn't agree more. Plus, its even more ridiculous for me, since I live about 1700 miles from the nearest great lake.

It sure is a nice thing to see that your stringers, or I guess since they are running side to side you would say bulkheads, are already built into the boat :)

That is why if I ever do any kind of rebuild again it will be a tinny

Yes, except for transom install, I am just about dead even where I was on my glasser project. Gotta like that...

PMC, my neigbor's been a paint and body man for over 25 years and says this is some really good stuff.

Thanks WOG... You have a product for every application or situation!! I am probably going to order up a quart and give it a try!

so PMC how did you get the inside so squeaky clean??

Well, its an ancient family secret developed after years and years (actually 15 days) of working on metal boats...

I started with a good little hurricane downpour with the boat uncovered... Then, a pressure washing.. Then, I hit it with the shop vac (p.s. home depot has nice 16 gallon Rigid vacs on sale for 49 bucks). Then, I started scrubbing a few areas with MEK and and scotch brite pads... I gave that all of about 15 minutes... I can't stand MEK... its so freaking strong and toxic... So, I started looking around on my garage shelf for something to clean and protect my transom... (because I wanted to get it good and clean/protected before putting on the JB weld). I found a can of fogging oil. it said "use to clean your internal engine parts from rust and corrosion." I thought to myself... HMMM, that sounds just about exactly what I'm after, so I sprayed some on the transom and then hit it with a scrubbing pad and soft wire brush with my electric drill. It worked so well there that I decided to use on the rest of the boat for all the little nooks and crannies, seems and rivets... They key was to wipe up the residue and clean it as you go.. I want through about 100 shop rags.. Then, I hit it with a shop vac again...

I will say for some reason it looks a lot better in the pictures. It looks clean in real life, but not quite that squeaky clean..

Well, then you're setting the bar pretty high for your next tinny. Such great results on your rookie tin boat

For the record, right up to that niggly bit just there at the end, you'd set the bar pretty high on the original/initial rookie season: Glass boat, part1. 2nd season pending

Maybe? ?

My vote is for a sleep aboard, cabin cruiser, with room for you, the Admiral & all the PMC young'ns :)

Wow,
PMC fantastic job on the hull clean. Can I order up some of that special hurricane treatment:D Seriously, inspiring. If you use that USC stuff, I'm eager to hear how it works.

Re: 1988 Sea Nymph GLS - 17 Foot

Thanks Tully:
So, the Gluvit has arrived, and I just wanted to make sure I didn't need to re-do any rivets before applying:

So, first a lake test - not much value in this IMHO - The boat stripped down is so light and sits so high in the water... Plus, your not really taking on chop, waves, etc... Nonetheless, I confirmed that I don't have any gushers at rest... That is the second round of JB weld on the transom (after sanding down the first)... Yeah, I sort of slathered it on there like clown make up..

9_8_12_Leaktest.jpg

Then, a land test... I understand some people worry that this can hurt your boat, but I thought there was value in doing this... I found that tapping on the bottom with a rubber mallet revealed a couple of "weepy" rivets.. However, nothing major at all. She's a good, dry boat!!!

9_8_12_leaktest2.jpg

Then, got started on the transom; just going ahead and fitting some boards while I'm waiting on my epoxy to arrive... I haven't cut out the "cut-away" yet, because I am going to use that area for some bonding screws before cutting it away...

Tomorrow - Gluvit!

Most excellent!

It isn't to early to start deciding about battery placement..

Hopefully the Gluvit will take care of the weepers ;)

Have a great rest of the weekend!

Nice work Pmc. When I did a lake test a couple of extra motors were dropped in the boat and then I got in and rocked it around a lot.

Looks like the glu-vit should yield one dry boat.

Isn't this a lot more fun than that old boat you had.;)

yeah, the gluvit, remember once it is on, do not paint yourserlf into a corner, literally, don't ask how i know, make sure your ladder is close to the exit point..... :D also, everything dust and debris wise will stick to it and it does not like the UV rays. progress, gotta love it.

Re: 1988 Sea Nymph GLS - 17 Foot

Yah, the lake test is best but you gotta have a whole bunch o weight in there for it to really mean anything. Filling to the water line is really as good as it gets for that kind of test. Really what it tells ya if you have any cracks or missing rivets that need to be dealt with. The weepers should be sealed up no prob with yur Gluvit;)

Hey bro, did you confirm the thickness of your transom?

I totally assumed mine was the standard 1.5", built it, and dropped it in only to find out it was supposed to be 2" - then had to add on.

Making good progress bud!:)

Thanks JBC - I wish I was far enough along to worry about batts. :)

Thanks 64! Yeah, I got in and rocked it around. But, I still need some weight.. (rookie mistake)... And yes, much more fun!!

Yeah, I remember when you did that.. :). Here's the deal, my transom literally bent inward and cracked where the bottom two motor mount screws were. So, this left a good quarter inch impression (dent) facing inward in the little tray where the transom boards sit.

So, I think its a two inch transom but its hard to tell, because my transom skin is so buggered up back there, I can't really get it flush.

I'll try and take a picture, but any tips here? I am going to add a supplement support on the outside, so maybe hammer (or even cut?) out these dented areas?

Re: 1988 Sea Nymph GLS - 17 Foot

Is there was a channel or bracket left that creates a pinch point (so to speak) anywhere to measure? Since you are rebuilding more or less from scratch the rear structure that should be the only thing that would determine your thickness.

I looked back at post #45, #48, and #74 I'm not seeing any major dents/creases just some waviness that should pull back together as things are rebolted. If you have some small ones at the motor mount a block of wood and a rubber mallet will flatten them well.

If you can see a gap in that lower shelf there I'm betting you are going to need a 2" transom. I'd just measure at a few places back there (with the transom out) and see what you come up with.

I don't think I'd recommend any banging/cutting. Adding on a fat alum plate notch troweled with 5200 would really help even things out when bolted up.

Yah, let's see some photos of what you are alookin at man.;)

Re: 1988 Sea Nymph GLS - 17 Foot

Bear, you crack me up...

So, this is what was troubling me on the transom...

9_10_12_outertransome.jpg

It costs me about an 1/8th of an inch on the other side, but I think were good there (I think I've got it figured out)...

So, I was greeted with some new goodies via UPS when I got home tonight...

My new livewell with drain already cut from Great Lakes Skipper.... (already eyeballing some placement options)..

9_10_12_Livewell.jpg

And some epoxy resin was kind enough to make an appearance as well:

Got the Gluvit down yesterday... and I've got 8 sheets of the blue 1*8*4 foam (R-4) from Lowes to get me started on flotation... Might actually start some forward progress soon...

The dent you're going to cover with an exterior motor plate of some sort that goes out past that right? If so don't fuss it. If it's cracked goop it extra w/ 5200 when you put the plate on.

Looks like you have it going your way.
You may want to drill some small holes at the ends of the crack to keep it from spreading.
If you haven't put JB Weld on the crack from the inside yet, the crack could be welded also. Just a thought.
Keep up the great work. Livewell is cool..

What, these are available aftermarket? I thought you had to dig 1 out of a glass donor, fab 1 out of an extra un-needed fuel tank, or use a cooler?  Nice livewell!
