Re: 1988 Glastron GX 199 Restoration

Chris,

You are doing a really great job on the rebuild and the quality of your work is excellent (wish mine was as good).
On the name with the tank them how about Abrams or Sherman?..............

Thanks! Funny that Tanks are coming into this. We recently restored a sailboat that belonged to General Patton's son in law. Also a four star general; General John K Waters - He had it built in Croatia in the 50's

Ill post a picture of that as soon as I can track it down.

.....I decided to install a false floor over the new deck. 2 panels of 3/4" ply in the wells either side of the motor. Everything sealed and painted. The trim pump and battery box straps are all screwed and sealed BUT only into the false floor.

Cool Idea. Ill have to think about options there. Thanks!

Chris

Here is the General Patton / General Waters boat;

IMG-20120608-00329_zpse343d49c.jpg

She came up to Ottawa with some American diplomats years ago. Was basically abandoned in the yard here. Our new i-Boats member "Sailexit" thought it was a shame to see go to hell and put a cover on it.

Ultimately got in contact with the owners and they gave it to him. Spent last winter restoring it.

Note the 4 stars on the bow

Anyway...that's that.

Thanks Chris for the extra image showing the tee nuts underneath the deck. Looks good & strong. On the gas tank, I reused my aluminum one. It's a belly tank and had a little surface pitting, but not greatly so. I gave it a thorough clean out, and sanded and repainted the outside. Should last whilst I have the boat. When I removed the tank, Sea Ray had used a series of lengths of rubberised foamy type material acrosss and over the sides of the tank. Much of it was squashed or damaged but I managed to cut it into small squares about 2" x 2" and I stuck them on the tank to act as small pads. That worked for me. On checking out to find out the material, it appears it is neoprene, which you can buy in sheets on the net. It's impervious to gas, oil, etc, unlike plain rubber.

Hey Chris.

Great job so far.

Adam and Anna are wondering if you will take them for a ride when you are finnished.
Then they asked "Is Chris almost done?".

From reading this thread it seems that you sure have a lot of good advice out there.

Have a great day.

Re: 1988 Glastron GX 199 Restoration

Hi All

Here is an update;

The fuel tank is in.
DSC_7674_zpsb7c977f0.jpg

As you can see there are two braces. The aft one simply to hold down the tank. So I epoxy glued, screwed, and fiberglass wrapped this;
DSC_7683_zps996c36e3.jpg

There is wax paper in there in an attempt to form a smooth surface against the tank....will see how that works out.

The one closer to the bow does not hold down the tank. It is flush with the stringers to provide support to the deck in a "high traffic area and large span, so the only forces on this brace are down, from folks feet above, so no glass on the brace, but all the "blocks" against the stringers are glassed in;

The forward part of the tank will be held down by the straps you see in that first picture.

So looking to the next phase......

I have a small amount of foam available to me;

I think that may be enough.

Cheers
Chris

Depanneur'?

Sounds like you've got quite the wait list for recruits wanting to be promoted to 1st mate :)

Hopefully!

A bit of an explanation;

To "come of age" in Ontario is to to know "The Beer Store" (govt mandated, brewer owned, monopoly, retail outlets) as the only place to buy beer. An unfortunate residue of the Canadian response to the 18th amendment.

The "Beer Store" can close as early as 8 PM:embarassed:

In Ottawa we straddle the border with Quebec...on the river:joyous:. And there, they never got in to limiting drinking in the first place; so they sell beers in the corner store "gasp", locally referred to as the depanneur...... until 3AM!!!

Deux Gross Biere S'il-vouz-plait!! That's all I know in french.

Vive la Quebec

HA...I figured that would be "restore-thread bait"

Honestly, we don't know what to do with it all at the yard. I will be using....2 pcs? I can make my own island nation with that pile!

Yea, if I build that, I may coax some slower boats out of retirement to challenge the title;

Look at that dash! It looks like 2 people can sit in there....

Re: 1988 Glastron GX 199 Restoration

OK So I had big plans today;

DSC_7708_zps4b73a41f.jpg

Was able to cut my shape, quick quick!

DSC_7711_zpsab040582.jpg

But the bar oil went all over the foam;

DSC_7709_zpscfbbbe5c.jpg

I did not want to be repeatedly test fitting oily things into my boat before gluing / screwing the deck down.

I tried washing it off.... but it's all to rough a surface.

So I tried a hotwire;

DSC_7712_zpse9f28379.jpg

Made from one of my son's guitar strings. But the foam is so thick that it cools the wire, and the cut stalls.

I compensated; Had it visibly red hot at +6 amps and it cut a bit better..... but then it broke.

DSC_7713_zps14383265.jpg

That's the third guitar string I broke trying this.

So I went to a hobby store and bought at "nichrome" wire intended for the purpose. It looks pretty small.....will see.

Any suggestions on cutting this stuff are welcome.

Thanks
Chris

I have never seen that tool before. Looks like it would make quick work of it.

I sense the hand saw is in my future:)
