Re: 1987 16 ss

I see that Sonus sealant lists "months of protection" in their advertising.

Sharkhide states something like 24 months or more, depending on the application.

I can't get the Sonus link for more product information to work.

Can you drive where the water isn't hard and test it for the next couple of months and give a report.

Thanks Otte, I love the oak myself.

64, I believe the Sonus is a polish protectant unlike the Sharkhide coating, I have read the Sharkhide will scratch off like a clear coat when beaching. I am not sure how the Sonus will hold up but it would be great to go somewhere where the water is soft for a couple months to test it.lol:D

I got the bottom for the ski locker installed today .095 aluminum, not going to rot out like the thin wood ply Starcraft installs in them. I will cover it with the same vinyl ?'m using on the floor.

I can't wait to see how this one turns out. That's going to be a bad 16' SS. I thought about polishing the bottom, and painting the sides myself, just wondering how practical it would be. My truck is silver so I'm trying to match it some what.

Good job, keep it going!

Thanks concept.

I have to spend a day cleaning the shop to get rid of the dust so I can start the paint process. In the afternoon when the sun shines in the south window all you can see is dust floating around.:(

By the way, even though it's not your rig, I added ya to the big board of Starcraft projects;)

Hey thanks GLG, got the Chinook, the wind is blowing 80-90k an hour and it is +6 pretty nice for the end of January in Sask.
I hope the Sonus holds up well it has good reviews.

I got the shop all cleaned out, talk about dust, let it settle for a day or two then on to paint.

I must have an IQ less that of Mr Gump, but something about polish and sealant under paint doesn't seem right to me. Is that what your intentions are? It would go against my paint knowledge to paint on a polished surface. Are you just clear coating or something?

Sorry for the endless list of newbie questions. It might just be easier for you to come over, hold my hand & restore my SS Glen.

Sure does shine purty though.

That polish job looks great. I had the same issue with Sharkhide, with it bringing up black streaks. I think with mine though I know I didn't do as nice a polish job, and I also rushed through the lacquer thinner wipe down. I think the key is to get it as clean as you can, then clean it again.... then again. Looking good though, I'm enjoying following your progress.

Nice work Glen. I like what you're doing with the boat. How long did it take to strip and polish the hull? I really like the look.

Thanks Paul, In the photo you can see a dull sand line 5"below the gunwales, it will be painted from there up and the lower polished hull will get a coat of Sonus protectant. The lakes in Southern Alberta and Sask, are not real bottom friendly, so we are going to try no paint.
You can do it on yours, there is so much help here on Iboats there is almost nothing we can't solve.

Thanks TT, we used Marhyde Aircraft paint stripper, this stuff is great it lifts the paint faster than you can scrape it off. We stripped the whole boat in about 7-8 hours including the final wash and rinse. Polishing now that's another story, took four of us about 8 hours two polishing and two wiping (but there was lots of wobbly pops involved)

Thanks Rh, Ya I don't know about the Sharkhide the jury is still out on that, I know I don't like their protectant. After I am done with paint we are going to lift her up and clean all the protectant off the bottom with lacquer thinner and try the Sonus protectant.

Lookin good!

Thanks Rayzor, it is coming along.

I thought I would never say this but these pics kind of make me want to paint my boat...again! You are doing an incredible job. The instant gratification of seeing paint and primer go on is the best.
