Re: 1987 16 ss

Thanks GA, but you know how the camera can hide the impefections.

Thanks Catfish, I think the oak adds some class to it, I'm getting kind of anxious to get her done as well.

Thank you too rheagler, there are a few more mods yet to come, this weekend should see some real good progress, Darcy the woner is on his way out for a marathon "work on the boat weekend"

That's weird. Out of all those pictures, you don't see mine beside it, huh. ;)

Awesome work Glen.

Newbie question... How did you reattach the Stringers? Any reason you didn't spray it while it was upside down? How heavy is it all gutted, or how many guys does it take to flip her? Any advice on how to flip, or is it pretty basic?

Dozer - I've looked at your other projects and as usual another great one going here, Love the metal work on the braces.

-31 really:eek: - I guess I can't gripe about 8 above and 6" of snow.

Thanks Paul, I can fit two in there, but there would be no room to work with three. The stringers were re-attached with aluminum rivets
in the same manner as the originals, but I use a straight edge across the ribs to get them level as they don't always do a good job from the factory.

Re: 1987 16 ss

Thanks Gibbles, a road trip would be good, but road conditions through the mountains could be a little bad.

Thanks 64, it has been terrible cold, warming up now a little could actually shut the work trucks off last night.

Re: 1987 16 ss

Glen,

I have been re-reading your threads, and I noticed you use nothing but Spar varnish for all of your wood. I know any protection is better than none, but what's your opinion on using the varnish vs epoxy resin on floors and transoms?

Another question: Are you going to re-install the side panels in the bow area?

BTW - I now have the exact outboard that you have (on your other project) and 85 HP on the 16' SS is a great combo. It's been a hoot so far!

Thanks Concept, In my opinion on epoxy is overkill, and considerably more expensive than Spar varnish. All the wood on the boats I have done are sealed with three coats, then covered with vinyl, so it dosen't see the sun anyway.

The side panels in the bow area will be modified from origional and reinstalled.

I will have to get some more photos taken of the progress from the weekend, ended up with three good friends coming out from Alberta for the marathon. We found that there is a beter product out there than Sharkhide, which smells way better as it works.

I was just checking to see if anyone noticed 64.;)

Product is considerably less expensive than Sharkhide, is amonia free hence no smell and in my opinion works better requiring less polish. I can take some photos of the boat but it is getting ready for paint and I don't know how they will turn out. We used variable speed 7 inch polishers with dimpled foam pads, One 8 once bottle did four passes per side on the boat.
Another good thing for us up here north of the border out west there is a dealer in Alberta that is great to deal with.

I was going to wait till there was paint on it but here are a couple of photos of the polish job.

We used the Sharkhide on the bottom but ran out when we got to the sides.

Oh man Glen, that is going to be beautiful!!!:D

Now hang on though, SH is a protectent whereas that Sonus is a polish. I've got the IQ of Gump but as I see it you'll still need to protect that sweet polish job ya did there. Otherwise it'll oxidize quick, eh?

Keep rockin it man!

Morning Jason, Sonus sell a protectant as well, and it has a better bottom feeder price than Shark hide. We used Sharkhide polish then put Sharkhide protectant on the bottom and I was not happy with the results at all.

I like bottom feeder $$!

So what happened with the SH that ya didn't like? I think it would be good for the guys to hear what ya had going on there.

After polishing the bottom, we wiped it down with special microfiber towels three times then applied the protectant as per instructions on the container. It proceeded to bring up more black residue which darkened and dulled the surface considerably.

Re: 1987 16 ss

Oh man, that stinks! Especially since it's all "protected" now too, rats.

Yah, on my hull I went a totally different route so I really didn't have that going on.

Though, I did find that using Mineral Spirits was way better to clean that Acetone or Lacquer Thinner as they left big streaks.

I don't recall Hoss having those issues on his rig. Maybe just a Canuck thing?;)

I even printed off Hoss' instructions and followed them to a T, so it must be a Canuck Thang.
