Decker,

Just read your thread, front to back. You are doing some excellent work! I can only hope that I can do as good when the time comes for my glassing. Your transom and sringes look great.

My arms were aching just looking at all the foam you had to gut from this boat.

Anticipating your next update!

Subscribed! Great thread, and those stringers look amazing. Fantastic work.

yes but you have to make sure that it has been calibrated and is dead on balls accurate......

Thanks tosoutherncars. Yeah it was funny.
Get your Cobia 200SS going. Need to see pic's.

Thanks Trooper. It took a few days getting all that foam out.
At the rate you or going it won't take long for you to have the glassing part down pat. Just take advantage of all the expert guys here that know how to do it and follow thier lead.

Re: 1983 Deck Boat Transom/deck/stringer replacement Help

Well I finally had some time to work on the boat.
Went over to HD and bought some cedar. It was 2"x3"x12ft long. The scew number didn't ring up at the register so they sold it to me for $1.00 each. I was only able to find 5 peices that were straight enough to use.

I ran them over my jointer on one side and then riped them down to make a 2"x2" square. I will use 2 of them to make the port and starboard rails. I will also need to add 4 ft more to make the full length needed. I notched a 1 1/2" x 3/4" on 16" centers to accept the 2"x2" deck support. I will have some pics of this later.

I started to build the support for the storage boxes and the splash well. I used some 4x8x1/4" a/b syp plywood for this. Some of you may think this is to thin, but all of the bulk heads and this support was made like this from the factory. I didn't want to add more weight to the boat.

On the top rails I use the jointer to cut a rabbit that was 1/4" deep and 1/2" wide for the top edge of the plywood to lay in. I glued this jont together and then put some 1/4" staples to hold it together. With this type of joint the top of the plywood will not be exposed.

After cutting the sides and bottom I used the drop off from the 2"x3" to attach the bottom and sides together. I then used the router to round over the edges with 1/2" round over bit.

I won't put the bottom on untill I have finished the fiber glass for all the sides and underneath the rails.

Here is a few pics. Didn't get the pics of the glassing yet, was to dark. Will post more pics of it all this weekend.

Thanks for looking in.

Good work Decker. Are you using poly or epoxy? I have a few questions for you in that respect. If poly... Were the fumes bad? How long do they last? Asing because I don't want the neighbors upset with me. They aren't too close, but I want to be considerate when the time comes.

Re: 1983 Deck Boat Transom/deck/stringer replacement Help

Thanks Wood. I've been watching you and the bench seat is awesome.

Trooper, I am using poly and I don't really have any problems with the smell.
My neighbors on both sides have said nothing about the smell or all the grinding dust.
I don't think the smell is all that bad. I guess if I were in a small closed in area it might be bad. I have done some glassing in my garage and it did get alittle strong.

If you start doing your glass work inside the nice shelter you built, I would make sure you have very good ventilation.
Check out Friscoboater's thread when he was glassing his.

Thanks for looking in guys.
