Re: 1983 Deck Boat Transom/deck/stringer replacement Help

Very nice work Decker. I remember that stage seemed to take for ever for me, but I did not have near the work you did. Your arms probably felt like they would fall off. Keep up the great work, looking forward to seeing the next steps. Awesome flip.

Hey AJJMH Thanks for dropping in and cheering me on. My arms have pretty much gotten used to the sanding, its my shoulders that or killing me now. I guess for a old man I will make it.

to get a 20 mil build up you may end up shooting more than 2 coats.

I am going to try and get more than 20mil. Going for 30mil and then sand down to 20mil I hope. I'll just have to see how it goes.
The first one I did was done in 2 coats but I had no ideal what I was doing. I sprayed the first coat and waited about an hour and sprayed the second and didn't know about the wax or pvp. Had to take acetone and wipe it down and let it set then sand the gummy off then sand the rest down. It turned out good but alot of work.

I haven't goten to the gel coat stage yet, but reading posts on other threads, I had the impression the goal was 35 - 40 mils, sanding back to 30. This is the first I've heard of 20 as the end target.

Sorry I missed this thread for so long .. it was going every where and I lost track..

I think I will ask the Mods to post a sticky up there about Gel applications ..

When your ready to Spray Gel Coat .. You Spray ALL coats at the same time.

You GO GO GO .. until All applications are applied.

You dont stop between .. you dont sand between .. you dont wax between .. you just Apply.

Yes there are additives that you can mix in the gel for "patches".

Best thing for a full blown gel job is to reduce your gel as thin as possible ( Buy a qt of cheep crap latex paint and see how your gun works .. then flush it with water .. then flush it with acetone ).

It all depends on how well you spray your gel on .. could be 3-5 times. If its heavy on the orange peel.. you might want to put one more (sand) coat on. (thin the last coat and spray it like paint to remove the Peel).

Lastly you want to apply the PVA .. the green stuff. Do NOT Inhale and treat this like Toxic.

I use the test of just tacky enough to touch it and leave a print without Inprinting the gel.

Then GO Go with the PVA ( Which sprays water thin and Fast ).

Flush your gun after your gel with acetone .. then flush it with water .. then spray PVA .. then flush it with water .. then final flush with acetone. ( you cant mix acetone with PVA ) is the reason for so many flushes with the same gun.

Any more questions PM me just to make sure . I will post them in your thread.

YD.

YD thanks for your answers. One question about reducing the gel as thin as possible. Are you saying to reduce the gel with some type of thinner or reduce how much I spray on at one time. If I need to reduce with a thinner, what should I use.

JBC that is correct!! I could not find the thread that was being refered to by WOG.

Thanks WOG. I did find some other info on using the MEK and patchaide.

Depends alot on who you buy the gel from as to what to use to thin with. I did find out not to use the acetone.

JBC that is correct!

You're welcome :)

I enlarged, printed & laminated this on a 3X5 card.

I plan to use it as needed in place of the Admiral's 'No you will not' little voice in my head :D

I wanted to read thru that gel discussion as well. The FireFlite will eventually need extensive cap work. So the info will be helpful to have.

Thanks WOG ;)

YD thanks for your answers. One question about reducing the gel as thin as possible. Are you saying to reduce the gel with some type of thinner or reduce how much I spray on at one time. If I need to reduce with a thinner, what should I use.

Sorry for the long delay ..

Depending on the Gel that you get you might need up to 20% reduction. That would include Acetone and possibly Styrene/mek ( old style ).

I like to put a bit of MEK solvent to the mix now.

Styrene yellows fast .. not a good thinner alone .. but it helps in the chemical reaction.

Acetone is hydroscopic .. A good part time reducer.

There are better Poly additives out there for a full blown spray that thins/reduces the gel for a spray application.

Most solvents should flash out of the gun tip given the right pressure ( I like to shoot at about 30 PSI(ish) air and about 12(ish) on the pressure pot.

Gel Coat .. the elusive ... exclusive .. :) .

YD.
