Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Hey, I think John Deere WAS a Spartan!!!!

I didn't know that Wood, I love my JD tractor, I just can't bring myself to put that pale of a green on my boat. I have a few sutle things in mind to pay tribute to my Spartans and the first and foremost thing it needs is a deep, dark rich green. I haven't found one in Valspar but I haven't given up.

I went to the valspar website & ordered both color charts for:
Tractor & Implement Restoration Series Enamel
Tractor & Implement Heavy Duty Performance, High Gloss Enamel

They both have a dark green, that is NOT John Deere green. The Heavy Duty Performance High Gloss Enamel has an Oliver Green that is fairly dark. It should be available anywhere Valspar Tractor paint is sold.

Maybe it will be dark enough to both honor Mr Deere & support your Spartans. I don't remember any of those 300 wearing green though...

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

The MFG is gonna be green?

There is a 2nd darker green: Oliver Green much closer to hunter green

Jeez, its a topsy turvy week: Dude's sewng, I bought a tinny, dude's discussing shades of paint color, where & when will it end...... Stop the ride, I need to get off or I'll hurl...

Maybe it's all a dream (nightmare) and I'll wake up to the FireFlite 100% done & water ready.......

Didn't want you to miss Wood while he was on, so sent that quick.

The hull looks good! Looking at your last pix, I keep thinking 70's wood paneling on a station wagon. Sure you don't want to 'faux' wood grain that top 1/3 of the hull?

Just a thought. Not necessarily a good one.....

You're a funny one JBC! (although you're right about it looking kinda like that, maybe I make the Griswald Station wagaon bass boat, lol)

The Rustoleum works just fine with the hardener. No need to worry about it. I've used it with NO ISSUES. Just like to keep MFG the same when I can. AS for setting up the gun this will help...
http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/techinfo/HVLPspraygun.html

And the formula for mixing and thinning the paint is on Page #10 of my Thread.

PM me if you need anything specific.

1/3 cup Acetone to 2 cups Primer

Thanks Wood, That is a great article on the gun.

JBC, S.P., Wood, you guys rock!! thanks for looking out for me.

Tonight we finally got to the point of, yup drum roll please.......

1 full coat on the whole thing tonight! We are pretty pleased with the results. We had a few drips early then figured that out. No run's that we can see and only a couple of spots we need to sand, fill and sand some more, lol. We both got to play with the spray gun tonight and jr took to it pretty well.

yay, we're moving forward

Looks good!

Maybe JR will want to make a spring break trip to WV & paint a rig (or 2:eek:) this year or an early Summer trip. I also know a guy that might know just where to be on 'Bridge Day 2012' to see all the action! Jump's & Bungee's are at the sole expense of the adrenaline junky:D

I'm just sayin'

The primer looks like it couldn't have gone better! Really great!

Thanks JBC, I'm pretty sure JR would love to go anywhere to paint at the moment. He was lovin life tonight with that spray gun in his hand, lol. Let's wait and see how much he likes wet sanding in between coats.

Man, I think I needed to reload my browser tonight before I posted. I completely missed the color "commentary", haha I'll go check the Valspar site to see if they have a dark enough green. I would love it if they did.

Catch ya'll tomorrow.

I'm not sure there were color samples online, but you can go to the 'contact us' tab & send a request for the charts. Kind of like house paint: the color chips at the store are much closer to accurate then anything on a computer monitor would be.

That's a great primer spray. You can tell how well you guys did in the prep work by the way the primer looks.
Looks like you've been spraying for a look time. Job well done.

The John Deere & Oliver Green both look almost identical on my laptop monitor. But significantly different on their color chart....

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Thanks guys for all the comments and support. Wood, my favorite green for my Spartans is a rich deep dark green and the Valspar greens just aren't there enough for me. Quick question though. How would it be if I used the Valpars gloss white for the majority and just used the Rustoleum for the green stripe? Or, should I just use the same mfg for all of the final coats?

Work has been a royal pain in the rear the past few weeks. Hopefully, this weekend is the end of that for a little while. I had to work late Friday and Saturday morning to oversee a major systems upgrade at work. Saturday afternoon was taken up by a training run, (I'm currently training for a marathon in late April) Today I made it clear was a day for me and the boat. My son had to work and I couldn't lose another day. I prepped and filled a few spots we somehow missed pre-primer, funny how the primer makes it jump out - lol, and wet sanded the entire hull. I then washed, rinsed and wiped down with acetone and got another coat of primer on. Man I like how that hvlp gun sprays! No drips or runs tonight. I did get some goo splaters from using a mix bucket that we used and didn't clean well enough on the first coat. Once I stopped, cleaned the gun out, then the bucket out and mixed up a new batch of paint, the goo splaters went away. Lesson learned. One thing I tried a little different this time that I think worked really well. I used an electric coil heater under the hull to help heat the hull up before I sprayed it. I then left it on when I was done. therefore I was spraying on a warm surface. After I finished painting, I fired up the reddy heater again and In 2 hours the hull is almost completely dry.

Ok, on to my proof of today's efforts. (although it looks like it did the other night now, lol)

I think the best comment of the night was my son when he got home from work. He said you can't even tell we filled anything on that hull!

If I can get one more coat of primer on this week. Then hopefully next weekend we're painting the final colors!

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Rustoleum and Valspar are almost identical in Chemical makeup. I would have NO qualms using one for the hull and the other for the stripe. See if you can go to an autobody paint supply and get the fineline style tape. Makes the stripe blend a lot better. Are you pouring your paint into the cup via a paint strainer?? If not you should. When it comes to color coats. ALWAYS clean the gun after every coat. Also HF sells disposable plastic HVLP cups. Get some and use a fresh one for each coat. This ensures no Spatter from the mix. The primer looks GREAT!!!

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Thanks Wood. I think I'll go that route then. Only the green won't be Valspar. I have been using the paint strainer. My mistake was re-using the mix cup from the previous primer session. I didn't clean it well enough. I think you, SP & JBC all said it was good to learn my lessons on the bottom where only I would know. I did find those disposable hvlp cups and yup, I'm doing as suggested. Saves a lot of clean up time. Good point on the full clean out between coats. Much like the prep work, the devil is in the details, lol.

If you say it looks great, I'll take that as the highest of compliments! Your work is what I aspire to. Not to mention that your thread and suggestions are giving me the info I need to do it right. Thanks for all you give us newbies!

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

if you get fine-line tape, it works great, but the adhesive is very aggressive, when you pull it off...move slowly keep the pressure close to the surface...maybe 6" max, and pull forward, not straight up (i learned by pulling a few spots of paint and having to repair!

You will be amazed at how the Valspar and hardener flow out of the gun. Do the transom first to get your volume and air settings. Don't be afraid to thin it a bit more if needed. I liked your idea of the heat under the hull. Just a reminder to make sure and let the Hardener "Cook" in the paint for 30 minutes before shooting.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Thanks Decker! Hard to believe it's our first time using an hvlp gun, lol.

Judge & Wood - I love the idea of the pinstripe tape. That solves a lot of questions with the transition lines. Good hint on the go slow and little at a time. I think I'll wait until the rest of the boat is done in case I have some hull touch up (still learning from you Wood after the tool drop on BF, ) I am excited, maybe another week and the outer hull is done then it's flip and cringe time, lol

Wood, I can't wait to see how the color flows. quick question. Do I paint the entire hull gloss white then add the green stipe over top knowing that I'm using the pinstripe tape so the transition won't be so dramatic? Thanks for the tip on the cook time.
