The 1/4" WOG is referring to should be an allowance above your floor deck for the PB or PL that goes ON TOP of your stringers which will raise the deck about 1/4". Which will slightly increase the distance between your deck's edges & the side of the hull. A gap is a good thing, it will just increase the amount of PB or PL needed to bed the deck in at the hull, which needs to be coved anyway prior to tabbing w/ glass & resin. You just don't want to cut back 'inexpensive' plywood to far out unnecessarily & increase the amount of 'expensive' PB or PL needed to fill the gap. This will probably raise your deck up to the previous deck height line that's still visible along the edges of your new un-bedded deck.

WOG may have meant another 1/4" allowance, but I don't think so. DON'T cut your deck back 1/4" w/out confirming WOG's thoughts.

Still ME!

Hey JDA,

Man you kicked some butt this weekend!

All this is great information regarding the 1/4" allowance from bedding in the PL... Looking forward to the next push!

Great work dude!

Wood is talking about stringer height, you bed the stringers in PL or PB and it raises the height of the deck, which since I am sitting perfect now would put me 1/4" too high...I wont cut my deck boards, I allowed the 1/4" on each side there...He is talking stringers..and is correct I did forget that in my attempt to get it set perfect, i forgot I needed it a little lower

I jumped the shark, sorry. I forgot you had not yet bedded the stringers & saw the deck laid out & ready to install. Along the same idea, just not in the right area. Good thing 1 of us was paying attention:facepalm:....... There will also be some lift from bedding the deck down to the stringers, but probably not as much..... +/- 1/8"....... And your currently cut to fit plywood should still work......

Still good catch WOG!

yeah, I put the deck in just to dry fit it, the stringers are still floating, only thing holding them vertical is the blocking between the 2 main stringers. the other 4 are floating....I just felt it would be conducive to my own sanity, if I made sure it was right before committing and bedding the stringers....it is a heck of a lot easier to run the boards down a table saw and remove 1/4" then to have to do it with a circular saw. Without any templates to use all I had to rely on was my ability to measure correctly, and while I do pretty well with measurements, I have been known to screw the pooch a few times!

You don't have to adhere your deck to the top of your stringers. Some do...Some don't. Your choice. Properly coated deck screw work real well. Also take Precise measurements of your stringer top centers before installing the the deck. Makes it easy to snap lines for screw installation later.

I was planning to notch the tops of my stringers and install 1X2s across the width of the hull to screw to, I don't like the idea of trying to hit a 1/2" wide target, not to mention the chances of the ply splitting when it gets screwed, so have an inch and a half wide board across is more appealing to me...plus it will help with stiffening the hull cross wise, and places at the seams of 2 sheets will keep it from bowing at the edges

Re: 1982 Skeeter SS-1 Sport Fisherman Restoration...In Progress

went and got my 1X2s today...my local place only had #1 grade @ $0.44 a lineal foot, so cost 26 bucks for 60 feet worth. I was looking to get 1X2 furring strips, which are cheaper, but with the price of gas, going somewhere that had them would be more expensive so got these instead. I have it laid out on 16" centers so I will have plenty of screwing surface, It is more work, but hell too cold to glass again, so need something to keep myself busy!

I was just getting ready to place my first ?gas tank? a little 10 gal metal one (eventually it will be my emergency tank when I get the bigger one). I do not understand this talk about the rubber mat, could you please explain. Is this for insulation or to keep the tank from moving? I am planning on mounting it topside on my boat or possibly hiding it under a bench or something. Do I need to do this mat also?
Thankx
Dave:D
P.S. I remember one thread around here about a tank blowing up. Do I need to ground an above deck fuel tank? I looked for that thread but could not remember who wrote it or I would have searched for it instead of asking you.
I?m not sure if this question is considered a hijack or not. If it is I apologize.

I don't mind hijacks when they are questions that benefit me as well lol, I am not sure I was looking for it too, but I think it has more to do with grounding than anything else..you would not want your tank to be the path of least resistance eh

Re: 1982 Skeeter SS-1 Sport Fisherman Restoration...In Progress

Thanks a lot Wood, NOW I understand lol...So since I have the bilge channel left open in my tank area, I would only need to put this plastic on the bottom where it has the deck which is 4" wide on each side...would 1 strip 2" wide one on each side ran lengthwise be sufficient? or should I do like 6 4" long ones ran crosswise and spaced? or should i do 6 all the across from one side to the other and let the plastic run across the bilge channel...opinions?

also noticed this info toward the end of it...thanks again for your insights before I made a costly mistake

Do not use rubber strips: rubber contains carbon, which is cathodic to aluminum and will cause galvanic corrosion

OK, so got the stringers cut down to size and notched them for the 1X2s, looks like it is going to work out pretty well

Bear in mind everything is just dry fit and loosely placed, so it will look straighter when i bed everything in

at the fuel box, I notched it so the 1X2 will ride on the forward and rear bulkhead of the recess, which will give a stronger anchor point for the tank tie-downs

IMG_3819.jpg

IMG_3820.jpg

The fuel box was giving me some small problems due to the fact I forgot to figure in the 1/2" deck portions, and that extra half inch was barely touching the hull at the corner So i cut a 45 degree angle on the edges and no more touching

So that is that....all the extra work did not last long...now what can I do to keep busy until I find some people to help me flip the cap!

Nice work on the 1x2's. Call the Scout Dads!! As much as you did for them on that Parade, they should be more than happy to stop by for 10 mins of work. Don't be to proud to ask!!!!
