Re: 1982 Skeeter SS-1 Sport Fisherman Restoration....Hull question

I spent about 7 hours wet sanding, anywhere I am going to put the dark green color, i have sanded to a completely smooth surface(dark shows blemishes more), the rest of the bottom i sanded to almost smooth, i did not want to take off too much paint. I think it will look a lot better, but it is just the bottom so I am going to live and learn and accept a few flaws in it. I have learned a lot from doing the bottom and hopefully the sides and cap will show it. Thanks for your advice and insight it will be well received!

Re: 1982 Skeeter SS-1 Sport Fisherman Restoration....Hull question

SO...my home-made caster = EPIC FAIL....decided top fix the ones that came off..and roll it out into drive to work in the sunlight...the casters ripped right out of the 2 X 4. Sooo, changed my plan and this time looks like it works

put some 2 X4 bases on to bottom, for suport

then put casters thru a 5/8 strip of plywood, so it had a stronger base.
IMG_3123.jpg

then drilled 1" hole, 1/2" deep in the 2X4 bases to allow the nut to seat flush
IMG_3124.jpg

seems to have worked...so finished up sanding with the sun, was a lot easier to see those pesky high spots..shes not shiny no more!

ohh yeah total sanding time...over 13 hours....moreal of the story...its easier to have it right,,,cause that rustoleum with hardener in it is a pain to sand down like that. Also decided to tape off green areas before painting again because the over roll was a pain to flatten out

Ok so i am all set to paint final coat(s) of the tan, I masked it off this time so no paint over gets into green areas...the sanding was awful, so would rather mask it twice!

son wanted to get in there

OK, here are some more; however these are purely an idea I want opinions on. I am trying to bring some design and color to the back so this is just one idea. Tell me it looks bad and it is gone...sometimes I overdo things and need someone else to tell me!

just the back? hows the prep work look to you? Honestly believe I learned my lesson about rushing...my fingers hurt from holding that 1X1 4" long sanding block for so long!

I would follow the natural lines of the boat when doing multi-colored application.

Sharp lines mixed with large curved lines dont normally work.

I would stick to sharp lines and follow the lines of the boat.

Thanks for your input YD, I did remove the lines from the transom, but already painted front before ya chimed in, I really want to make the tri-hull noticeable and my wife loves those lines so the bough is staying like that. Anyhow, came out alot smoother, figured out that in my fear of going too thick, i went too thin, which dried faster than it could level itself out

Looks like you're learnin!!!! Amazing what you can do with patience and a little foam roller. Have you tried Shaving with her yet. Looks to me like you could see your reflection pretty good if the light was just right!!!!:p

Dunno about shaving...but I can almost watch the neighbors TV...that house is across the street, Id say about 250 feet from where my boat is...if ya look close you can see his dining room light shining in one of the windows lol. I actually ended up roll and tipping, did the first side roll and roll, but it didnt come out near as smooth for me, but this is my 3rd coat roll and tip so I think I am just getting better with that method. If i had started roll and roll I would probably have been that good with double rollers. still your guidance and advice works with both methods and was invaluable! No such thing as too many pictures? thats how i feel! Have a 700 dollar camera, I am going to use it!

Make sure and do a dry sand with 220 and then wipe down the area for the Green with some Mineral Spirits and or Acetone first. If acetone don't leave it on to long. Are you going to prime first? High Gloss paint especially with hardener has a tendency to not like to have other paints overcoated onto it.

I had already primed for the beige...and since it is same brand wont it to stick to what I sanded down? I could re-prime...hadnt thought about it. Assumed the prep I did to repaint the beige would work for the green...should i have re-primed the beige area before i repainted it? lol now ya got me panicked! all the white is primer, those side striped used to be red gelcoat

Nope, I guess I should have looked better. If all the green area is primer and NOT the High Gloss final coat with hardener, then I'd do a once over with a scotch Brite pad, wipe down with MS and start rollin!!!!

Re: 1982 Skeeter SS-1 Sport Fisherman Restoration. In Progress, Hull paint

yeah lol...I actually taped off the green area this time, because that hardened enamel was so hard to sand I did not want to do it again! taping 2-3 times sounded more appealing! You can see the definite line where i stopped my beige..and i did one small swatch of the green to see how it will look
