How HEAVY IS THIS BOAT AND WHAT SIZE CHANNEL IS THE TRAILOR PLEASE

The original weight of the boat was 5,440 lbs according to Bayliner. The trailer is rated for a max load of 8,000 lbs. I estimate it was probably over 6,000 lbs on the way home due to how much water it had absorbed.

The main frame of trailer is 3" x 8" C-channel beams. The cross members are about 2" x 6".

GWPSR, just found and am now following the thread. Looks like a big project, with a big reward at the end. Funny how many times I have seen the term "Boat Porn" while reading this thread, and glad other have the same addiction, So I guess I can tell the wife I am at least semi-normal!

GWPSR/JR - I happened across your posts after searching for fellow Bayliner Victoria owners. Your work is inspiring.

I recently purchased a 1980 that was a repo and am in the process of learning what I've gotten myself into. The story I got was that the PO had the sides painted and a rebuilt engine installed and then couldn't pay....so they reposessed and auctioned it off. Very few bidders on this 33 year old boat for some reason )

There is a soft spot in the aft cabin (4" in diamater approx) that I need to check out (boat is stored away from my house) but that is all I saw after removing all carpet, etc. You mentioned there are two main stringers and the rest hold up the cabin floor...where are those two main stringers? Any thoughts on how I can view/test their condition?

Thanks, I will continue to watch your progress. This one "appears" to be pretty stock so if you ever need pics or anything of the same model let me know (realize you don't want to build back the same flaws stated earlier). Good luck! bayliner port.jpg

The stringers under the aft cabin run from the engine bay through the head. There is a hatch into the sump in the salon floor between the head and gangway. There will be a pair of bulkheads in the sump, one fore and one aft of the hatch. The aft stringers are terminated at the aft bulkhead, and there are engineered stringers from the front bulkhead all the way to about where the V-berth cabin wall is.

The fuel tank is the center 4' in width under the aft cabin and part of the head, and the aft stringers run along each side of it. You can possibly get access from within the engine bay to sections that traverse under the firewall next to the tank.

If your soft spot is not in the middle 48", you may be able to pull rotted chunks out and gain access to the (possibly soaked) foam below. Actually, until you find differently, let's just assume the PO took great-ish care of your boat, and what you find is superficial.

The other spot I found that was a chronic wet spot was just below the stairs. If the drain gets plugged, water spills into the cabin.

Good luck! I love the pulpit design on yours. Very classy looking. And your paint looks quite glossy too.

First time on the water for the season last night, in gwpjr's Starcraft:

Spent about 3 hours cruising up and down the section of Erie Canal between Spencerport NY and Albion NY. Would have gone further, but the drawbridges in Spencerport and Albion are too low to get under without raising, and we didn't have a radio with us. Next time for sure.

Great way to enjoy a nice Spring evening and wash away the stress of the workday.

The bottom of my hull needs extra support while we create and attach new stringers and bulkheads. After those are back in, I can set the boat on blocks and pull the trailer out from under it. I fear the deformity it might cause if I were to try that now, with no inner structure. The trailer bunks provide a lot of even support, but not much between the chines and keel. I'll knock the temps back out of there when I'm done with the bones.

More canal vid. We had to turn around before the upcoming lift bridge as we couldn't fit under it and couldn't raise the bridge operator without a radio.

Well... interesting development today. While grilling chicken for dinner, I did a little sanding of the existing topside paint (which I think the PO put on with a long nap roller ...).

Look what appeared:

Really? "TAXI"? I sanded a little above it to see if it had another word, like "TERRIBLE", "TERRIFIC" or "TITANIC", but nothing has become visible yet.

Now I supposed I have to go through the "unnaming ceremony" before I can put a new name on her.

At least it wasn't "Blue Grandma"

What a project. Strippping her right down. I will be following this thread closely.

Im working on a similar 43' at the moment. Ended up having to take it down to the glass. Just a hull and deck. Had to rebuild the stringers. Found a lot more rot than anticipated. cut the whole transom off and rebuilt it after the outboards were fitted screw allowing alot of water. In the final stages of fitting now. Engines going in next week. and launch in June.

You're gunna be a little short on Resin unless you already have some. 1 Gallon will wet out about 4 yards of cloth. I presume you'll be mixing some PB too!! And then there's always that problematic waste factor!!!!:grumpy:

I'm going to order it 5 at a time. No sense having it sit around if they'll ship it in a week each time. No hazmat on epoxy, so it's just the freight charges. The cloth on the other had gets much cheaper at quantities over 24 yards, so 25 it was. Would have bought a whole roll if I thought I could handle it easily. :)

The cloth is for every job, but the epoxy will start with the transom. I have two hatches/lids to repair (anchor locker and aft cabin), and if there's any of the 5 gal pail left at that point, I'll start the stringers and make my next order.

25 yards probably won't be nearly enough cloth when I get to doing the sole and other stuff. I'm sure there will be a second order of that too.
