It had a lot of ablative bottom paint on it. Why someone would paint it black I have no idea. It'll get repainted as close to the original off-white as I can find. Luckily the pitting is minimal even though they had no zincs on it.

The VP paint isnt too pricey, for the factory color i picked up the primer, paint, and some clear..all rattle cans. You can get the VP red for the flywheel housing too.

Looks like you had a good time with the stripper....I was doing the same thing today...but not boat parts :(

gwpjr also spent some time today removing shellac from an antique buffet we rescued from my mother-in-law's basement. Thought it was lacquer at first, but mineral spirits didn't tough it. Denatured alcohol on the other hand freshened it right up.

GWP did you end using saw dust ground up for filler similar to wood flour and how did you find it worked.

I ended up using a lot of that for filleting and bedding in the forward half. For the really large areas that were mostly horizontal, it was all wood, but in those that were coved, we mixed in a lot of West milled fiber as well. This mix with milled fiber in it seems to weep resin less while kicking. In the more horizontal applications, it mattered less.

The consistency was much finer than ordinary sawdust, but probably not quite flour. More like coarse cornmeal. Inexpensive, and a natural byproduct of cutting a lot of wood :)

The plain wood dust mix doesn't trowel quite as smooth as the West powdered fiber mix, but it seems nearly as solid when set. Hitting it with a die grinder for cleanup before laminating over it feels similar -- maybe just a tad less rigid, but not by much.

Please note that GWPSR is also using epoxy NOT polyester resin.

It was a propane-powered Thanksgiving at the P household.

gwpjr got a new smoker, and spent all day smoking bacon-wrapped venison (freshly harvested this season) and turkey drums:

and I manned the fryer for the turkey. It sure smelled good outside, despite being 20 degrees. That appears to be about as cold as the fryer will still operate. I had to run the burner on high to maintain temps. Ordinarily, that many BTUs will vaporize oil.

It was all delicious and nobody left the table wanting for more of anything.

Santa brought toys that will come in handy come spring.

Maybe even before spring :) I can weld lamp brackets on the trailer as long as it's not snowy and wet. Or sub-zero. I will be so glad to reserve my old manual helmet to visitor use.

Merry Christmas or Floaty Festivus to all!

17 degrees and holding. :) Still brutally cold up here, but spring ought to be right around the corner.

Didn't do diddly this winter on the stern drive as originally planned. A number of life complications kept me otherwise occupied all season, but that's OK, it'll just make me appreciate resto season all the more :encouragement:
