Re: 1981 Bayliner Victoria 2750 - Restore or Bust

Just getting all caught up with the progress you guys have been making...
Everything looks A-1...
I like the kerfed stringers, very nice...
I have been looking around a bit but couldn't find an answer, maybe you can clear something up for me...
What exactly is the sump for?
Is it a collection area for waste?

Does it get any kind of plumbing or pump?
Thanks!

The sump is where the shower pan in the head drains, since the sole is below the water line. Originally both the sink and floor drain in the head drained into the sump, and the bilge pump in the bottom of the sump was on a manual switch that someone would need to remember to activate every so often (and remember to turn back off again ...)

I'll be putting a small pump in there with a float switch, and a manual override as well. I'll also drain the sink through a thru-hull rather than into the sump. The sink will get used far more often than the shower. I only have a 20 gallon freshwater tank anyway, so it'd be a really short shower. Especially if I don't put a water heater back in.

I wasn't going to put a shower back in at all, but then I thought about the consequences of having to mop/rinse the head in case of an accident/spill from the potty. The first time that happens, I'll be mighty glad for the ability to hose it down. :)

Tonight,we removed most of the cleats and ground down the goobers from bedding and filleting the stringers yesterday. gwpjr then vacuumed up the dust:

Then we mixed up another quart and a half of PB to finish the fillets on the outer edges of both stringers:

Then I glued the plywood core into the hatch skin, and rigged up the worlds ugliest clamping rig to bring it flat. I got enough ooze to go all the way around the edges and fill the gaps and all hardware mounting holes.

Clamps don't need to be pretty, just functional ;)

Thanks, that clears it up...it is similar to a gray water holding tank in an RV...

Where does the sump pump the shower drain (gray) water? Thru hull too?

Not all waterways allow gray water directly discharged thru the hull. NY does, I happened to be reading WV info today, so I checked NY after your post........

May be only Federally mandated NO DISCHARGE waters that prohibit the gray water overboard.....

Grey water is fine (except in Canandaigua Lake), but raw sewage is verbotten state wide now. Used to be you could dump 3 miles out, but from what I understand, that was repealed in 2011.

"G", your restoration is a full time job!!! Big project, the boat is going to be better than Bayliner made originally.

Thanks Jay. That's the goal. It's also the inevitable result when two engineers take on a project. :)

Many, many moons ago, I replaced the breaker panel and service cable in an old house I owned. When the inspector arrived to sign off on it before the electric company would put in the meter and connect the overheads, he said to me: "You work at [formerly big, former film and camera company] don't you?" I said: "Yeah, how'd you know?" He replied: "Only [K] engineers bend all their wire and cable around perfect radius's and have every staple evenly spaced." Busted.

All I can say is, we're going to be impossible to please when we get around to wiring. :)

Yesterday I added another layer of 6 oz glass to the inside of the hatch

and tonight, while grilling, trimmed the excess and sanded the edges smooth, and gave it a test fit:

Meanwhile, gwpjr cut cardboard templates for the next portion of the superstructure:

and after dinner, we cut lumber. Tomorrow we'll route, then seal them, and maybe do some fine tuning on the fillets with the die grinder.

I'm a bit confused on the new drawing. The looking from the front view mainly. I guess I was expecting that to be showing what is under the front but the number of stringers don't add up to the overhead view? Either way looks like there is some serious stringer meat going into the boat for sure.

Sure they do. Check out this close up:

Note the material in a different color is not structural (necessarily) and will be applied after this part is complete. The horizontal material on the starboard side is under the galley banquette, and the port side is the base upon which the galley cabinetry will be built.

I actually was thinking the same thing as SMG... Seeing it how you just reposted it ^^^, it makes since now, esp once I figured out that that divider bulkhead area read Sump...

Everything aft (it's in a rose (?) color) of the sump area you just finished working on is a different area of the hull then what you just posted showing the overhead & cross section. It all terminates at the sump, so NO continuity of stringer as you move forward into the blue area:
stringers3b.jpg

And you're overhead of the rear section shows you fuel tank support stringers, that are only under the tank, terminating at the sump...

Got it

Yeah. I thought it was clear that the cross-section was specific to the blue shading (current work), but maybe only to me. :)

Re: 1981 Bayliner Victoria 2750 - Restore or Bust

gwpjr spent 5 hours bedding bulkheads, filleting and tabbing today. I was on mixing detail. All told, we used over a gallon of resin.

He managed to get two layers of tabbing along the outer edges after the bulkheads were bedded and braced:

20131005_165541.jpg

20131005_165527.jpg

and a couple of tabs on the inside

20131005_165312.jpg

but the rest of the smaller pieces for along the inside will wait til tomorrow so we're not kneeling in wet resin. They're all pre-cut and waiting

I also spent some time taking the old block off the engine stand, digging the hoist out of the back of the garage and clearing out an area in the front. I've got a line on a guy selling two 350 small blocks out of a boat that had a fire in the forward cabin. They've got 200 hours on them, so I'm going to take a look this weekend. If they look and run good, I may pick one up.

Looks good, GW..I would say you got the better end of the deal with the mixing....

Good luck with the engine too! that would be a nice score if the price is right...

Re: 1981 Bayliner Victoria 2750 - Restore or Bust

Great project and fantastic inspiration. I spent hours watching 80 odd videos of Friscoboaters project and learned considerably. Although Frisco's project is not the type of boat I'm looking for, much of the techniques and principals are the same. A familar cruiser such as yours is exactly what I want so now that I've caught up with things I'll be watching and waiting excitedly for progress updates.
I'm on a very steep learning curve and anxious to learn and research all I can. I have a couple of questions for you......

The sump looks great and I love the glass inspection cover. I think you mentioned that you were considering including some visual warning (at the helm) that the sump level was above a predetermined limit. I guess in the event of pump failure, blockages etc the warning light would allow investigation and give added peice of mind. A simple float switch or even an old truck fuel tank sender unit could easily be adapted. Anyway, my question regarding the sump is, what is the purpose of the 2 layers of foam lining the bottom of the sump? Is it for thermal insulation ie to prevent freezing or is for something else?

My second question regards your stringer plan. Have you merely copied the original stringer plan and beefed up the material or is your existing plan your own design (with regard to the number and location of the stringers)?

Good luck with the engine sourcing
