All you need is something that will keep the water out (displace) that is lighter than the water (buoyant). Any foam will do both.I prefer pour in foam with a thick plastic drop sheet laid in first. That way it isn't as big of a pain to remove for repairs.

I've decided to rely (initially at least) on sealed chambers for at least the aft cavities. I'll see how the forward half shapes up before I decide what I'm doing up there.

I can retrofit with pour-in in the aft cavities at any time later.

, but maybe even in some of the sealed chambers for piece of mind.

The problem with sealed chambers is that you never know if you have a breach/leak in them until it's too late... the Titanic had sealed chambers.

Go with the 4lb. foam if you retrofit, it's more water resistant and durable than the 2lb.

Earlier today I laid out templates on 10 oz fabric and cut what I needed to add one more layer to the inside of the sump, and laminated it all in.

Then I added a layer of 10 oz top the bottom side of the sole that will be over the sump. The original wood was just primed. I pie-cut the glass in the deck plate hole and wrapped it inward. I laid thin plastic (grocery bag) over the glass and placed the piece that was cut out back in the hole (wrapped in a rag to add thickness) to hold the glass in place while it cures. The tolerances are tight for the deck plate, so I want to make sure the wrapping is nice and tight.

After some lawn mowing, gwpjr and I began to lay out the forward stringers:

He was scribing the profile of the hull in the pic above. Then they got cut and smoothed with the disk sander:

And rounded over the top edge with the router:

These stringers are over 7 feet long. The forward three feet of them curve inward, so we created kerfs nearly half the thickness of the material every 3" along the curved portion.

Good lookin' wood work GW, you gonna fill those kerfs with PB after you bed the stringers in and before you lay them up?

Before committing them to a coat of epoxy, we clamped them around a couple of pieces of lumber cut to size to hold them in place and test the curve:

I've coated them now with a liberal coat of epoxy and we'll try to bed them tomorrow.

Thanks. Absolutely.

Wait til you see the rest of the stringers. This thing had two 3" tall 2" wide stringers originally in this area. Needless to say, it'll be beefier afterward.

Started out the day checking the fit of the deck plate to the piece of sole for over the sump:

Fits like a glove. Then I painted the inside of the sump with BilgeKote:

Later in the day, gwpjr joined me, and we placed the stringers in place, and screwed some cleats to them to hold them steady in preparation for bedding:

We mixed up 3 1/2 quarts of PB, hurried to get it out of the pot before it started smoking. Laid the stringer assembly into the PB and gwpjr used the fillet tool and a stir stick to strike radius' on the fillets.

ah yes, the foundation for the floating condo....it must feel good to move onto the forward section. Lookin good!

I smoked out a pint of resin a few weeks ago, i guess i was jerking around too much..it freaked me out cuz i was holding the pail at the time, as it started to droop....

After that we started working on the hatch cover for the aft cabin. The PO had replaced the core with 1/4" luan underlayment and the deck was too flexy over the hatch.

I was able to pull the luan out easily, and gwpjr began to scrape the glue and remaining wood from the previous core:

Meanwhile, I cut a replacement panel from 3/4" plywood, and reduced the outer 2" around the perimeter to 3/8" using the table saw. Cleaned it up with a chisel:

Gave the panel a bath in epoxy, and while it was still wet, laid a layer of 6 oz cloth in it:

I'll PB it into the hatch skin sometime this week, then lay a couple of additional layers over the top to bond the edges and create additional strength.

It'll need another coat to make sure it's all covered, but yeah, the white looks nice and clean in there. That won't last long :)

Re: 1981 Bayliner Victoria 2750 - Restore or Bust

Just getting all caught up with the progress you guys have been making...
Everything looks A-1...
I like the kerfed stringers, very nice...
I have been looking around a bit but couldn't find an answer, maybe you can clear something up for me...
What exactly is the sump for?
Is it a collection area for waste?
Does it get any kind of plumbing or pump?
Thanks!
