Re: 1981 Bayliner Victoria 2750 - Restore or Bust

... my Porta potty was self contained...

Yeah, mine started off that way til the genius ran a 2" dia piece of tubing through the side of the base and caulked it, then connected the other end to a seacock and thru-hull so he could flood the waste tank with freshwater, and let the rest flow out.

Even if the tubing hadn't come loose from the caulk at some point, and he hadn't neglected to at least shut the seacock, resulting in saturation of EVERYTHING below that point, it was a floating violation and could have gotten me a $500 fine if I hadn't noticed.

But, much of the story at this point comes to us courtesy of one hare-brained idea the PO had. He'd have still hydrolocked the engine by cutting the hole in the engine hatch, directly over the spark-arrestor.

If not for his thoughtful consideration though, whatever would I occupy myself with? Knitting?

When I lifted mine out i did notice that it is still full I may just toss the whole thing and start fresh instead of dealing with the PO's old phphphphphphphp

We laid the tank on some cardboard in the approximate place where it will end up to create some room in the forward half of the cabin:

That tank sure collected a lot of dust since being painted.

Then began to finish ripping out the remaining scraps of headliner and the small bulkhead walls that used to be the V-berth:

Spent some time with the shop-vac hoovering up chunks of leftover foam and bits of wood and glass. I'd hose it out, but with all of the rear portion glassed in, I don't want to flood the bow anymore.

Today I'll get out there and rip out the couple of pieces of tabbing that didn't just rip loose with the wood. They really weren't very structural at all.

Once all the grinding is done and it's all cleaned up, the fun part starts again -- laying out the design of stringers and bulkheads and ledgers. It will be different than original. I'll adopt a design used on later Victoria models, featuring a galley floor that is dropped another 4-6" from the sole, allowing you to stand upright all the way forward to the skylight hatch. The dropped area will only be between the center two stringers, and the remaining sole will be at original height under the galley cabinets and settee.

gwpjr was itching (pun intended) to do some demo work today, so he began to pry remaining tabbing off the hull where I removed bulkheads yesterday. Started with the flat bar, but graduated to the air chisel. I swear this is one of my favorite tools.

There was a bit of grinding to follow. He wrangled the grinder and I manned the shop vac hose to catch as much dust as possible. Cleaned up afterward, then reused the template from the bulkhead forward of the fuel tank to create another one:

And dry fit it in place, 8" from the existing one:

And then cut a pair of stringers 8" long with a 17 degree bevel on the bottom to match the deadrise. These will go between the two bulkheads and frame the ends of the sump area. I'm guessing the sump will hold as much as 8 gallons.

Gave it a coat of epoxy so I can bed it tomorrow and fillet. I'll be lining the bottom with rigid foam, and a flat area at bottom of plywood to attach the pump. The entire sump will get several layers of cloth for waterproofing.

Thats a good idea GW, mine already has a 3" drop in the galley, and it makes all the difference in the world, especially underway.

looks like your making good progress.... this weather is much better for this stuff ;)

We used some of those chopped fibers I bought from Jamestown to bed the bulkhead and stub stringers, then filleted most of the inside of the sump area using West milled fibers.

It wasn't worth mixing another small batch of PB just to hit the couple of spots that still need fillets. I'll get them when I fillet the outside of that bulkhead later.

gwpjr left after that with his StarCraft to go see if he could find any salmon. He was looking for them in about 50' of water the other day, but got a tip that 25' was where they are right now. We'll see if that tip was worth anything when he gets back.

Edit: Turns out there was a small craft advisory on Ontario today, so he trolled in the Erie Canal instead.

This winter I doubt I'll be working outside in the boat. I think I'll spend the cold season working on the outdrive, checking for worn parts, and prepping it for paint in the spring. May work on some of the Volvo parts that I'll need to reuse too.

Of course, that means I'll need to clean my basement shop. Not looking forward to that task. :)

Re: 1981 Bayliner Victoria 2750 - Restore or Bust

gwpjr finished the filleting tonight after dinner, then we sat in the empty cabin 'strategerizing' where stringers and bulkheads will go, how wide the aisle should be, and the position and size of the banquette/booth.

Lots of good ideas. We'll draw from them when we snap lines and start creating cardboard mockups/templates. gwpjr had an idea to fold cardboard over a piece of dimensional lumber and then fitting the surrogate to the hull curves and angles, and using it as a pattern for the lumber. Since the next few pieces have multiple compound angles and sweeping curves, this idea appeals to me.

Speaking of drawing on those ideas, I figured I'd better do just that :)

The area in blue is what we're onto next, and the far bottom is the elevation view. The galley sole is dropped slightly from the cabinet base, and the banquette will be raised an additional 6" so that we can get two across per side of the table, and so that you can see out the window while seated.

So GWPSR you decided to put the sump back in, Showmeguy the sump is where the shower and sink would drain and have a separate bilge to pump out the grey water. Hey GWPSR can you put that diagram in my thread in more detail thanks great job on it. I'm 6' tall your design is right on!!!! Thanks GWPSR

Yeah, I'm adding the sump back in, but will take extra precautions to make sure it's sealed well, and drains. I thought about what might happen if the potty leaks, or needs to be rinsed, and I figured it'd be best to have the entire head have a floor drain. The sink will probably have a separate thru-hull so I'm only using the sump for shower water. That should be so infrequently that I'm worried less about it becoming a cesspool. I'll have the pump on a float switch as well as a manual override too, just for caution.

I'll be adding a deckwash as well, so people would likely just rinse off above decks after swimming instead of using the shower. I thought about the consequences of not being able to hose down the head though, and clearly that's an option I want to preserve. Just in case.
