K, for today I cleaned up the totally trashed shop/garage from the push before the vacation. Man what a mess!

Change of course for the dash panels (after all that work), I'll be going 1/4" alum like the Jet Star. Grabbed the remaining chunk I had...

If you can't read my writing:

Port - Fuel, Volt, Temp gauges. Horn, Bilge Pump, Nav Lights, Cockpit Lights, Baitwell for switches.

Starboard - Tach and Ignition.

Angry badger steering in the middle:cool:

How does that look to you guys? Logical? Look good? Make sense? I kinda rushed on the first run:rolleyes:

Independent of whether you're a right handed driver or a lefty primarily on the wheel, I'd consider moving the horn button inbound for super quick & easy access. In the past, I switched back & forth as throttle needs arose. If I was in a no wake, or slowly cruising, I drove right, so port for horn. Intermediate throttle: left steer, right throttle. Same for maneuvering in & around the dock & slip. Running to the dam, generally WOT+/-, or cruising up 'river' to the north end of the lake etc, right steer...

Since it's hard to estimate distances on that panel, and how you'll be positioned while at the helm, I might move the fuel into the volt spot. That way closest & largest is tach, followed by temp, then fuel. Unless you're measuring the status of the batteries for the trolling motor, and not the output from the engine.....

But the overall layout looks fab, well balanced & well thought out

(Now I'm not counting all the sacrificial donor boats. Those don't actually count do they?)
All except Thumper. Thumper counts because every thing except the glass went into one of the tinny horde. Thumper ended up being a West Marine/iboats store on wheels.

I think the AL dash is gonna be fine. Shades of the Jet which was a good un. No pressure now so plant your behind on a milk crate and pretend. What ever you come up with will be all you and suit your needs.

Looks like you had an awesome time on vacation. It's always better when you pick up a new addition to the fleet along the way :D I like the rundown of your tinnys of present and past.

That alum is going to be sweet Jas. The only thing I'd offer (which is way OCD I know) would be to take pics of all the gauges, print em out and stick em to the panel, install ABS (Angry Badger Steering) wheel and dry fit panel in boat. Then sit in the thing establishing as closely as possible the spatial relationship between your noggin and dash then make sure the rim of the wheel isn't running right across the face of any gauge or blocking your reach for a switch. Then adjust spacing and placement as required. The final layout might end up no so symmetrical but more ergonomic in use.

As for gauge order, I'm for most critcal nearest the tach and decending order to the outside which I think you nailed.

Very astute comments on horn placement from jb. You are a true student of Human Factors sir!
My addition would be, wherever it is, place it well away from any other switch. When you gotta make a quick jab for it you don't want to hit something else by mistake cuz in your peripheral vision your brain had to sort through a buncha similarly placed buttons. My dad's boat is like that. A stack of ten tiny, closely placed switches n buttons and one of em is the horn...:facepalm:

As for ignition, isn't that on the throttle unit?

I believe my thinking kinda sorta jives with what you guys are saying. I spose I put the most used/important stuff outside port. I figure the most used gauge would be the fuel. Installing it all the way out I can take a quick glance from pretty much all around the cockpit. The rest of the gauges I was thinking I'd be looking at while sitting down trying to figure out what's happenin or going wrong, knowhatamean.

I figured for the horn I'd be blasting it for a pretty important reason, so, all the way out to the left, easiest to reach from anywhere I'm at in the cockpit. I should have already throttled down, right hand on the wheel, left thumb pumping the noise maker. Left fist shaking in the air at the perp as the situation dictates. The rest of the switches left to right by importance/use.

Yah, the ignition was on those Johnson controls but the more original OMC controls that I'm usuing have the separate ignition switch.

So this morning I cherry picked a couple of easy plumbing jobs. Clamped up the fuel lines to the big ol tank...

(Yah, I know the fuel sender is all painted up, it was a late night when I did that. I'll scrape that off later.)

Great news there ^^^^ is that while I paid like 4 bux a foot for the supply/vent (had a minor mental issue too) that fill line was an extra I had left over from the Islander, so freebee:)

Then I got the bilge pump all plumbed up too...

Well thought out instrument layout, as should be expected;)

Excellent job of thinking ahead to when you may not be at the helm while underway, and having access to some of the important stuff from other areas of the cockpit.:cool:

welcome back! vaca sounded like an awesome time! Great pics, even the one of the sunrise:D You could tell you were in the UP, cus nowhere else in the lower 48 does anybody wear a stocking cap fishing the last week of july!:cool:

Oh boy, let's see here...

First I had this little 12' Sea Nymph, 6 HP Merc. Great boat but I sold it to get something a little bigger...

So then I had this 14' Starcraft with a 25 HP Merc, sold it to pay some bills...

That was very sad, that was an awesome boat. So, I started searching for something really cheap and found my way to iboats, and started reading, and thought huh, I think "yah I could rebuild a boat!"

And found the Islander with the OMC Stringer for $450...

Then I figured I needed something for small water, so snatched the Jet Star with the ol Chrysler for $250...

Sold it to pay the tax man, that that was sad. Knocked the wind right otta me.
Seeing you go through all of these boats reminds me of my father when i was just a pup! It seemed like every summer there was a different rig being used! There are 2 of those boats i wished i could get my hands back on, and a 3rd that sits in my garage now being used fishing and hunting with my kids

I gotta see this. I didn't know the surgical repair entailed grafting another left arm. Good thought on the horn button placement for easy access with any of your three arms/hands. Good idea for us regular mutants too.

Well there is the new rig to deal w/, sort out, sit-n-staring planning sessions for a resto-mod... Plus there's always the new girl's jump ahead in the assembly line

Yah, sorry fellas. The past few days have been pretty thin on boat work. This is my super busy landlord guy season. I also has some serious drill issues. I had my nice 18V drill grow legs and walk off. Then I had my heavy duty corded drill start on fire cutting out the gauge holes out of the 1/4" alum dash. Then I burned up the brand new 18V replacement on the alum too:rolleyes::facepalm:

Hopefully I can get an actual progress report posted on the morrow:)

My 18v drill grew legs and walked off to. You wouldn't think you could burn up a drill on 1/4" aluminum, it usually cuts pretty easy.

I do believe somebody ganked my drill out of my truck while I was working at one of my apts, rats.

Yah, those big hole saws were apparently a bit much for my gear (kinda dull too). Ah well....

Put some wax on your hole saw, it'll cut way easier. If you burned it up using a drill bit, then try drilling with your arms and not your legs.:facepalm:

How does the Mirrocraft compare to the Starcraft rowboat?

That red Starcraft I posted up there ^^^ is a much bigger/deeper/heavier 14' than the Mirrocraft. I had a big 25 HP on that one and it was quite comfortable. I wouldn't want any bigger than a 15 on this little/light Mirro Craft.

Thanks for the tip on the alum cutting Don. I've got about 1/2 of the holes cut out, hoping to get the rest today.
