I think I will vote for the dark blue. Easier to tie in with interior and easier to find parts. I do like the black on the hull, but what would you use on interior of the boat other than white & wood? Just MHO.;)

Yah, I am leaning hard towards the blue. It definitely ties in better with the seats.

If I went with black I'd have a gray deck would work well, of course the white vinyl goes well with the black, and I have these sweet black face Starcraft gauges...

Course then the blue trim on the seats throws things off.

If I go with blue it seems like I would want white face gauges instead. I'd also feel compelled to go with a white deck instead of gray. Not sure of the wisdom of a white deck but it sure seems like there are a lot of boats with white decks out there that do just fine:confused:

Hmmmmmm......

Thanks for chipping in guys!:D

I seen an episode of muscle car on spike's power block where Rick dyed some seats for a ride they did and you couldn;t even tell. They have there own web site where you can look up thier projects and watch the episodes. I like the black maybe add a blue swoosh from the bow to the transom to add contrast.

I vote for the black and I really like the way he painted it to follow that rib contour all the way. There are some good vinyl dyes out, perhaps you could dye the blue on the seats?

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I have two cans of vinyl spray-on dye that I have not tried out yet. I have tons of grey/blue seats that don't match my boat either:D

I am still planning on testing it out to see how it works so I'll let you know if it happens any time soon.

I also like the lines on the black one, I wonder how it would look minus the graphics? I'd go with blue on the hull to match those sweet helm seats you scored I guess, if it were done with the same lines as the black one it will look absolutely killer:D

Nice work man keep it up!

Once you black you'll never go back. I vote black, but I'm bias.
Lookin' good, keep up the good work

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Thanks a bunch for stopping in guys!

I suppose what would probably make the decision for me is if I can dye the blue on those seats. I'd be pretty nervous about doing it myself. I think I need to do some further reading on it.

So here it is...

If I can safely die the blue on the seats (probably to white or gray) I'll go with a black hull. But it'll have to look right, I'd hate to wreck those seats!

If I can't, I'll go with the blue hull to match the seat trim.

I'm good with that!

Time to read up on dieing vinyl...

Depending on how bad you want to change those seats, you could always shop around with upholstery shops.

Considering the vinyl is good, and they can pull a perfect pattern from that, you might be surprised to find it pretty affordable to have the blue changed to whatever color you want.

Prices can vary allot though so shop around. Most places have projects they are working on, and completed laying around, and they should be more than willing to show off some of their work.

There is an Amish shop not far from me in Shipshewana IN, and I'd bet he would do that for less than 50 bucks a seat.

As for colors I feel your pain. I'm not sure which way to go either. I've seen a couple sand/forest green boats I liked but then what for interior.

I really like the black hull, and my last boat was black and white. I'm currently considering white/black, white/red, silver/white, and sand/dark green.

Jas, I hate to pop your bubble but I do not think that there is any way to dye a color that dark to a lighter color. Just how it goes for almost anything bud. Even when things are painted you will use a lighter primer if you are going to use a lighter color of paint, at least that is what I was told by BIL who is an auto body guy. That blue in your seats is pretty dark and really dont think you will cover it with a lighter color, not even gray. Just my .02

Not yet giving up of the big tiller, eh teamster:D

I keep studying the pictures trying to picture a boat like your turned into a monster tiller boat,....

A gargantuain 12 or 13 foot front casting deck for chasing slobasouris Muskeys,....A cavernous rod locker under the front deck,...

And still have a huge back area for running boards when I want to hit the big lakes,..

Seems like a perfectly justifiable addiction or maybe a project for myself one of these days,....

So I keep watching and waiting to see how all of these "Starcrat Nation" projects turn out,...

Yah, I'm not bent on changing up those seats nor is the black a must have. More of a preference sort of a deal - if I can swing it, cool, if not AOK too!

I shopped around on upholstery, a lot actually. Some are looking for an arm and leg while others want nothing less than the first born. I have come to the conclusion that it's prolly more cost effective (in most cases anyway) to simply buy new than to redo old. Bummer.

I think before I have a shop tear those seats apart to get at the blue and replace with new vinyl I'd probably just go the blue hull route, eh!

Cheers Man!

Yah, I kinda figured that might be the case - spose I needed somebody to confirm. That blue is very deep/dark. No sweat! Thanks Kelly!

Hey, whats happening with that motor of yours?? What are you up to lately?

Later!

Why not throw some seat covers over the seats,.........

Cheap and easy,......

With fuzzy dice hanging off of my windshield wiper motor! Yah baby!!!!

vielside - that rig is sweeeeeeeetttt!

teamster - a hull like that would be a perfect 4th boat for me. With the waters I fish a closed bow is pretty well a must have.

Now ask me if my bride will allow 4 boats around my place.......

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

OK, got some stuff done yesterday...

Got the third deck piece cut up and got everything sanded. Hauled all three deck pieces down to the temporary shop in the basement. Now they are ready for epoxy...

I also got all the bow hatch covers/structure pieces cut and sanded. Had the boys on sanding duty...

Ethan...

Love those guys!

Ran a quick dry fit...

Hauled all the pieces down to the basement shop too. I believe I'll paint these and save my epoxy for other parts of the rig. At the moment anyway, I am thinking that I'll wrap them in vinyl.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I am going to want to paint up the cabin interior before I go any farther so I started on prep type stuff.

I had about 30ish holes that needed to be filled from fish finders, deck cleats, horns, grab rails, and whatever else.

I mixed up some JB Weld and went along the underside...

Then back to the topside...

Once they fully cure I'll sand em down.

Cheers guys!

I must have missed this when you posted it. Where did you get those gauges? Those are going to look killer! Are they all compatible with your new engine/outdrive setup? I would love to get a hold of a set of those.

eBay my friend! I'll keep an eye out for ya. Yah, they should have no trouble working with my driveline. Working with my color scheme, well that depends I suppose.:D

Hey Jas, white decks are all the rage on big tinnies here downunder. The main reason is so you can walk on the deck... ever tried to walk barefoot on unpainted or dark colour painted aluminium on a sunny 90F day? I have, a mate of mine has a 20ft Stabicraft with an unpainted checker-plate deck. He must love the smell of fried feet in the mornings... Ouch! :(

Great to see Ryan and Ethan on sanding duties. Bet you can't get them to do the washing up eh? :D

OK bro, what are all the rageing Aussies using for decks in their metal boats anyway??

If I were to go the white route I wouldn't go with Rustoleum. I'd go with something like a Durabak, KiwiGrip, or Nautolex DecoDot. I'd obvioulsy need some easy cleaning stuff!

Speaking of cleaning, I am just about to clean Ethan's face for bed time. He has dinner all over it!

You think they make Deco Dot for 2 year olds, prolly some expensive adhesive for an application like that.:):D
