Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I'm digging that improvised wood shute.

Yah buddy, freebee!

I bought the Arauco too and like it. I seem to be in a holding pattern but at least I can see you making progress.:D Keep it up Bro.

Thanks dude! After running it through the table saw and cutting out the scallops with the jigsaw I continue to really like it!

Hey man, go work on your rig - even 10 minutes is good stuff eh!

The only thing I actually got done yesterday was a quote on zipper replacement for my cabin cushions - $200+. I'll check somewhere else.

Hate to tell you this but your trailer is on it's side. LOL

Hate when that happens:D

If all you need is zippers order them you self and replace them. My cabin enclosure needed several redone. Ebay supplied them at a great deal with matching thread. Check around though some of those sellers wanted mint prices for their stuff. YOU CAN DO IT.

Yah, I may need to have my mom teach me how to do some sewing, she is awesome. I also need to do some jump seats and such so the winter months will be perfect for learning and doing that sort of stuff.;)

Oooooo, I have a plan buddy! I don't know for sure if it will pan out yet but I definitely have something up my sleeve.

Certainly nothing fancy, at all, but fun for sure:D

Damn, your gas is only $2.73 a gallon?! I pay $3.05!

You're really tearing through this boat, it's looking great. You'll be done in no time! I've been really slacking lately. Now that the boats done for the winter I'm gonna try and get off my butt and work!

You're flying. You've got a lot done considering what you've been through.

Though you didn't cut a load of wood, shingle the roof and rebuild the car engine in a single day it's still not a bad pace for you :)

Yah, it bounces between $2.50ish and $3.10 constantly. It can go up as much as $.50 in the same day which really burns sometimes, ya know.

Man have I got you guys fooled! I appreciate the compliments but I am definitely moving at old man pace, with a walker no less! Shuffling feet sort of a deal.

I have been stalling just a bit over the past week or so as I was having trouble deciding what direction to go from here.

Paint then rebuild?

Rebuild then paint?

With the temps what they are (and will be) and all that yet needs to be done it was a confusing choice for me.

Well I think I finally decided last night that I'll do neither/both. Compromise maybe.

I'll start down the paint road by sanding/filling/prepping/ZC everything from the top to the bottom.

Then I'll paint the bottom (tip or flip the hull, dunno yet).

Then I'll get her back upright and rebuild all the rest.

Then I'll paint the upper hull, bow deck, gunwales, stern deck.

I think I have a few advantages by going this route...

With the rig empty it will be the only time that I can actually tip or flip to have access to the bottom of the hull. Otherwise I be on my back for a very long time prepping and painting.

Also, by rebuilding everything then painting the rest I avoid the inevitable scratches that would happen with the whole process if I were to paint first. I'd also be avoiding the dust and such getting all over my finish work if I were to rebuild then paint.

Make sense?

I am feeling pretty good about this direction, eh!:D

It's not nice to talk about me like that:rolleyes:;) Jas, you keep saying how slow you are but the proof is in your threads. You are doing great. I like your game plan buddy. Logical, efficient, and for those two reasons alone have no place in this forum.

Couple of quick shots from a couple of nights ago...

Old deck templates (now ready for the burn pile)...

The original deck I pulled out came to a grand total of 6 sections. My plan is to consolidate that and put back 3 sections. So what does that mean? A whole lot less seams and a lot less opportunity for water/rot to find it's way into my deck.

Piece #1...

Piece #2 was basically just a square so no photo there. Piece #3 has yet to be cut as I need to be a little more exact about where my motor will land and such.

Excellent. Good to hear your plan is going from plan to action.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

All of it got a light hit from the palm sander tonight. As soon as I started I realized how frustrated I would have been had I rebuilt the whole boat and then came back to prep/paint. Check it out...

P1040272.jpg

That was only a few minutes into sanding! By the end of the night it looked like I had walked into a bar and picked a fight with a box of cue stick chalk! When I walked in the house the kiddos called me a smurf! Man what a mess! I am really glad I decided to go this route first.

I didn't bother with after shots. It all looks about the same. Just knocking down the high spots and smoothing things out here.

This might be a good point to let you guys know what kind of direction I am going with my paint job.

Bottom line, I just want it to be durable and look aok. I am not after the mirror/glass/showroom shine. I know what kind of time and resources that takes and it's not really my goal here. Not sloppy mind you, no way. Just look good from 10 feet out sort of deal. This will be a Rustolium boat, not even sprayed either.

This boat will be used. Three offspring, skiing, tubing, wake boarding, big time fishing, downriggers, the works. I know if I spent major time and money getting the perfect pant job I'd cringe when the scratches and diggs came.

So durable, looks good, that would be my goal. Simple enough, eh!:D

It is only going to take 3 sheets of plywood for the entire deck? How are you configuring your seems?
