Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Well, haven't got too much done in the past couple of days. It's bee super nice here in MI and I have been enjoying it while we still have it! Matter of fact I am getting out the tent and sleeping bags for one last camp out with the boys till next year.:) Campfire and smores are ready!:D

I have been just sorta cleaning up the transom a little here and there when I have a few minutes. I have big gobs of epoxy hanging off that needed to be hand filed down before I can sand. I am thinking I might have time to finish that up, paint and get er bolted in the rig by the end of the weekend. Hopefully.

Cheers!

But Jason, where in the world will you find some wood for a campfire???
Just think, this time next year (or sooner) you and the boys will be sleeping in the boat;)

Oh man, that will be awesome! I know just where our first stop will be too...

North Manitou Island, Lake Michigan! I have done a ton of backpacking/sea kayaking out there, absolutely beautiful! The surrounding waters hold good numbers of salmon, trout and steelhead. There is a huge lighthouse en route to that island that is perfect for Supermaning off of! Fantastic air time! Though I wouldn't know as it's highly illegal to even set foot on it!;);)

After that, about 1000 other destinations. I should probably get this boat built.

Not much done on the rig yesterday. I sanded the transom for about 3 minutes. It was beautiful out so the boys and I went fishing. We saw a largemouth, caught one stick and one leaf. Had fun all the same!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I love Michigan... well, in July at least!! I have a friend that lives in White Lake, on Cedar Island Lake... west of Pontiac. I am back there every year over the 4th of July and fish my butt off... :) Would be cool to plan next year to see a few old Starcrafts and maybe go fishin' w/ you or HA.. I used to have an old Tracker that a neighbor on Cedar Island let me use... What a nice guy, Norm.... "Hey Tom, the keys are in the boat... take it whenever you want!!!" That's what he said to me when we were introduced!! Love the MW hospitality and trust. He moved though and sold the boat...hard times... Now I just ude a pedal boat..lol.. get some exercise anyway!! I'm babblin' so I better go see if I can find some dang noodles and seal that deck down today!!!

Have a great day!!!

Thanks for stopping by Tom - hey noodles are 1 buck each at the Dollar Tree when they stock them.

OK, just by way of comparison I laid down a line of JB Weld on that aluminum...

Snapped with pretty much the same pressure as the other stuff...

Anybody out there use that ALL METAL stuff? Any good?

I also had a chance to work on the transom this morning.

Here it is all sanded down and cleaned up...

All primed up...

Painted (back too)...

Not a work of art but rock solid, sealed up tight and should be quite functional as the backbone for the Merc.:D

Cheers guys!

Hey Jas,

How thick is the transom at the outdrive cutout? Mercruisers have a limit (something like 2"-2 1/4", dunno, would have to check) that you can't exceed.

I didn't read back to see if it was mentioned, but thought I'd ask (hopefully not too late).

Oh yeah, it's looking great!

Jas, I just checked back (a lot) and didn't see where you test fitted the transom board after you epoxied it.?? Hopefully you won't have to "adjust" it. Is that what you meant by it fits in the slot? It really looks great my friend.

Looking good Jason!! Yeah, I was at Home Depot... was going to buy pipe insulation instead and happened to ask a guy...he pointed to the 99 cent store!! $1 each... :)

What are you using that "W" shaped bracket for?

Great job making it through beast! Heck no it's not too late to vote - I'll prove it to you.

I have added your vote clear back to post #76. Moreover, I was checking out this stuff this morning...

Oh, if I only had $5K laying around.

Cheers!

Oh yah, she was in clear back at post #1456. Sorry, what I meant by "slot" was total transom depth being right smack in that 2" to 2.25" tolerance range required for my Merc.

Thanks dude!!:D

Thanks man! Nice job on the noodles too!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I?ve been reading this thread and a bunch more.

I smiled and had to post when I read this.

The issue still is..that one low compression cylinder.
The next issue will be that drive..at the very least some seals.
The next one will be bellows etc for the new install.

I?ve had i/o?s
They are great for many reasons..but your ?costs? are about to happen.

I have an islander also.
It had a 400 series omc drive.
It?s all out now..and I?m headed towards an outboard.
Yes I?ll start a new project thread shortly.
Sorry, but as mentioned..your outboard postings..made me laugh!
You want an outboard..hehe don?t ya!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Yah havingfun, IO vs. OB debate will rage on. Lots o' reading around this iboats place on that.

For me, money wins. Even if I have to buy a new SEI outdrive that's only $1300ish. I am still a long way from the bottom end starting price tag on a big OB. The rest is basic IO maintenance that I can do (I think). Something goes wrong with that big OB and we are talking huge $$ at the dealer mechanic.

I know, I know. Long term costs might be more with the IO. But shoot man, $5K just to think about an OB is way out of my league for now. Maybe when all the kids move out.

Looking forward to seeing your project man!

Gotta be a great feeling having that transom fit perfectly. Nice work.

You are starting to make some of this look awfully easy from over here.:)

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Fair enough!
I can tell you if my project boat had a merc i/o hole I would be fixing and or running it again already..but..long story..I did have a plan. The plan caught me sooner than I wanted it too!

To me the biggest potential of an outboard is the ability to be fishing right now..ie little to no worry of freeze ups.

I?m in Chatham Kent Ontario..not that far from you. There is GREAT fishing to be had this time of year!

I?ve have ?my? project thread up in a day or 2. It will be the ugly brown Islander with the rocket launchers..soo many that..if they where for anything other than holding a fishing rod..I?m sure home land security would be paying me a visit!

ps..do not wait too long getting your rig ready....before you know it the kids will be "grown up" or at least grown to an age where Dad might not be the coolest man in the world to hang around!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Thanks Mike! Yah it's nice when things comes together like they are supposed to.

Well guys, from here - I won't be on the rig for a while.

We are headed down to U of M on Monday. First thing Tuesday morning Ethan (2 1/2 years) will go in for surgery. He has a mass (encephalocele/gleoma) about the size of my thumb at the base of his brain (back of his sinus). Though it is benign it's still brain surgery.

The team of neurosurgeons we are working with are amazing, the best really. We have a lot of hope that all will be well. I so desperately want him to be ok.

Oh my God man, you must be a complete wreck. Hang in there Jason. Ethan will take it all in stride. 2 year-olds are like that.

Prayers everyone! And not the casual-mention-at-the-dinner-table kind. We need to be on our knees for this one.
