Clean the area first and slap some JB on her. It should hold & you'll have no leaks.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Well I found a few minutes today.

I banged out the pan and was really satisfied how it turned out, pretty darn close to where it should be...

I drilled out the very ends of the cracks that started to form to prevent them from getting any bigger. Cleaned it up real well, schmeered on some JB on the outside and the inside...

I figured as many times as I'll be lifting up this engine I grabbed one of these on sale cheap at Harbor Freight...

Wow, using that is about a hundred times easier! Even Ryan the 4 year old could pull that Merc up! He thought that was so cool!!

Make time quit work and just crank her up. Wait that leaves no cash for boat goodies. I hope that is all that is wrong with the engine. Waiting patiently for a start up video. Well not patiently but waiting.

I hear ya buddy! I might have had it going tonight if the JB didn't need the time to cure, eh! Hang with me man, molasses in Alaska is my speed, sorry!

Cheers:D

You do know J you could have used a little brazing rod and map gas to seal that crack plus filled the an w/ water and tested it for leakes and be staring it as we speak! The art of improvization is great. Heck I just used the blender in the dish water to clean the mash potatoes off the blades and make more suds for the rest of the dishes the wife didn
t care much for that method but my when my next ones born she'll appricieate it!!!!!!!!!!! she did like care for that comment eighter!!!!!!! Good luck J

This may be a stoopid question, but why can't you remove the original pan, bang out the dents to give proper clearance then put it back on the motor, fill it with oil and fire her up?

Maybe the dents are creased and would leak oil a little, but it would cost you zero $ and it would at least answer the question about whether or not that's all that's wrong?

Like what if you spend $175 on a new oil pan only to discover the rest of the motor actually is shot?

jeez i could swear someone already said that ..

Sweet ... bang out the pan, reinstall, fill back with oil .. restart and lets see how it sounds ..

oh yea . it was me ! :)

You should have seen this little tiny kid pulling up this big V6, smile as big as the Islander itself. Pretty cool moment right there!

Well it's nearly 4:30 am at the moment and I am going out to do a bit more work on her. So tonight or tomorrow maybe??

You do know J you could have used a little brazing rod and map gas

Yah, that prolly would have worked great but didn't have either on hand. I am thinking the JB will be aok.

jeez i could swear someone already said that ..

Sorry chrisp, I've got a thick skull buddy! If I can get enough guys hollaring at me I'll get it eventually! Thanks man.

Cheers!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Got a few things done before I had to head off to work this morning...

Oil pan back on, looks good, turned by hand, no crazy noises, spark plugs back in, spun a new oil filter on.

Pretty much all I have to do now is dump in some oil and scrounge up a few wires for the test run. Pretty excited bout that!:D

Yah, I am with ya. I have no illusions that I can avoid a good old fashioned beat down by the mob if it comes to that. Caution though, I'd prolly take one of ya down with me.:D

I have high hopes for this Merc! Gosh wouldn't it be great to just have her run!

Yah, but I asked in a very deep voice, while chewing on bolts. You just didn't get that from where you were sitting, eh!

Apparently all this staring at the oil pan has really taken Jason away from his primary task of boat restoration.....

You must have forgotten EZ, I have an IO. This motor is probably 2/3 of my rebuild process. And yes, I know you want one too buddy.
