Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Thanks for swinging by fellas! Yah, I do hope that I don't have any major scary moments from here on, though, it is an IO remember. I know I still have a long road on it as the install will be a bear and all the maintenance stuff will need to be done too(bellows, impeller, gimble, all that....). And, it's all new to me to boot! I'll take my time and get there one way or another.:D

What it needs in it's immediate future is a new oil pan. I am still learning what has to be marine and what can be automotive on this Merc, so here is my question if anybody would like to chime in....

Must the new oil pan be marine spec or is it ok to go auto?

Logic tells me that auto is ok in this application, but what the heck do I know!

Thanks dudes!

The configuration of the pan is the only issue. You have to be sure the lower section of the pan is correct for the oil pick up tube/screen. I don't know the costs of either marine or auto (obviously) but I would stay with original unless there is a huge cost difference. This is the " Brains " of the boat, no need to skimp on it since it would be expensive to make a boo-boo.

Yah, that is exactly why I ask the question actually. I am seeing a variety of configurations out there and picking up the right one would be KEY! I have all sorts of auto parts dealers around so I was thinking to buy local and if it's not right I can return it. Or, just bring my old pan with me and match it up right there at the store. I really don't want to buy this online and then not have it be the right one, ship it back, all that hassle. If I know for certain (by part number or something like that) I'd be ok buying online.

I am with ya fsh, has to be right, no playing around!

Jas ya know I was thinking about this today. You don't need an oil pan at all! Go ahead and drop the motor into the Islander, without an oil pan. Then just fill the bilge with motor oil! SOLVED!

Yah, I have you guys totally bamboozled. No genius here, just stumbling along whie you guys baby sit is all.

Shoot, PR has me pouring a couple of 5 gallon pails of oil in my bilge here!

I will say that I am glad I thought about adding this guy to my oil pan. No better time to do it than right now!

That should make my life a lot easier next time I drain the oil!

Hold on Jas, Papa may be onto something. Look at the money you save by not buying the oil drain kit ($45.00). You could just pull the boat drain plug.:D And oil displaces water so you don't have to worry about water coming in!!!

Bless your pea pickin heart!!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Well fellas, I tried to do something and all I did is spin my wheels!

Stopped at my local auto parts store (great guys), grabbed a new oil pan. Looked like a perfect match, sweet!

Got out all the tools, hoisted up the Merc, put the pan in place, no fit. Took it off, tried again, no good. Tried it about a half dozen more times, no good. Measured it up side by side to the old one and come to find out the trough is just about 1/4" deeper in the old one. I believe the pickup/return tubes are preventing the pan from coming all the way up and into place. Took it back to the store, they are going to try and find me a new/different one.

Lowered the engine back down, tools away.

So there would be a couple of hours squandered, eh!

My new avatar is such an absolute farce!

Ah well, we can take a run at it another day.

Cheers guys!:D

Hey no harm no foul. The larger belly in the pan may be the difference between marine & auto, but ya gotta try! Jas is the old one that messed up? I mean, have you tried to beat it back into shape? I wonder if a metal shop or machine shop could do that for you?

Yah the old one may have to do if I can't find readily something. It's for sure bent up pretty good but I am betting I can get her back into shape with some gentle yet firm persuasion.

The hitch is that where that nut on the rod was nicking the pan has begun to split open just barely. So with that in mind I have considered some combination of a JB weld and a metal "patch" welded over top of that to ensure that nothing silly happens.

Bad idea? Good idea?

I am finding new oil pans in the $75 to $80 range and if I can find one that fits I'd be ok with caughing up that kind of cash. I also found a "Mercruiser" oil pan in the $280 range. Um, no. I won't be spending that kind of money. I'd rather just go with PR's suggestion in that case.

Snags, rats!

I'll get there one way or another:D

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

surely i am posting this for no reason, as you have looked here at iboats

Yah, thanks dmoriarty for posting up! I was hoping to do a little better $$ wise.

A little detective work now tells me that there is in fact a difference in the 4.3 Merc and the 4.3 Chevy. Soooooo, maybe I can find a good used one somewhere, or fix the old one. If all else fails, I'll cough up the cash for the new one there on Iboats (painfully).

Except, on closer inspection, I don't know what those fittings are for on the side of that Sierra pan. Don't have those on my original, might not matter.

This would probably work, though his feedback isn't all that great...

This might work too but his description doesn't seem to jive...

Hey you gotta look at the bright side. that is a whole lot cheaper repair than you thought it was going to be:D. I would think you could find someone local to do a little weld repair on the area that might be cracked.

Yah you got right bro! I am still feeling way good about my direction so far!! I think I may snatch up one of those eBay deals and be done thinking about it.:D

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

This may be a stoopid question, but why can't you remove the original pan, bang out the dents to give proper clearance then put it back on the motor, fill it with oil and fire her up?

Maybe the dents are creased and would leak oil a little, but it would cost you zero $ and it would at least answer the question about whether or not that's all that's wrong?

Like what if you spend $175 on a new oil pan only to discover the rest of the motor actually is shot?

Nope, that is a fine idea. The little crack that I have in there might get a little bigger once I bang er out some but she should hold long enough for a test run anyway. It's only just barely nicking it, maybe an 1/8 of an inch or so. Yah, lets just do that, thanks guys.

Question, since I have never done it before...

How do I start this motor without my whole wire harness hooked up to it? I have a battery and some jumper cables, what the heck do I do with them?
