Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

OK, not much to update, bummer.

I got all the wires fixed up (I thought), new ignition switch wired, hooked up a good battery, jammed a garden hose into the raw water hose, ran water and saw that it was coming out of where it was supposed to. All good so far!

Decided to try the key real quick just to see if it would just turn over for me. Nope. Nothing. I fiddled with and made some adjustments to some of the wiring. Nothing. Problem could be anywhere really.

I am at a loss, though, it doesn't take that much to get me there.

Maybe one more thing to try, stay tuned...

Keel roller shafts should be here tomorrow, at least I can hack that!:D Well, so could any below average 5th grader.

Video camera batteries are in the charger TII!

That was stinking funny HA! Oh man, I'd kill to for dance moves like that! I actually already have the outfit, wearing it to work today.

Yeah 'stinking' is a good word for that video.
I have a stupid suggestion Jas, does the battery need to be grounded to the engine? I don't know why I ask, it just popped into the void in my head.
I'm looking forward to hearing the engine purrrr. Please make sure once its running, you can kill the juice to turn it off.

Thanks for watching out for me fsh!

Yah, actually, just about everything is hooked up just like it was that last time she ran in the Saginaw Bay, including that battery. Well, minus a big chunk of hull anyway.

Cheers Man!

Bad news. Real bad. I think I have a blown motor. Sounds like somebody is running a jack hammer on the inside of the block. Wow bad.:mad::(:(

I thought you ran it in the donor boat? That description doesn't sound good though......

Nope. Took the owners info, took the marine techs info, took the receipts that backed up what they said, and took the bet. Looks like I lost that one. Man that hurts!

You are dealing with a super rookie here Alpheus. What the heck am I looking at buddy?? First Generation ipod? Space Shuttle ignition system? Hyper sensitive pizza crust thermometer?

Any way you shake it, thanks for stopping by!:D

Its a starter box for Mercruiser engines. Just plug it into the plug on your engine hook up the battery and hit the power, ignition switch and hit the starter.

Mercruisers are easy to start. Hook up the battery put a jumper between pins 5 & 6 and put a switched hot lead into pin # 7 to activate starter. The box I built just mimics the boats dashboard..

Oh no... really sorry to hear that Jason. :(

I hope it isn't too expensive a fix - and at least you have the winter to look into it. Good luck mate, you can do it!

If the motor was sitting a long time did you turn it over by hand before cranking it over? The rings may have been stuck. Anyhow, was it running but making ugly sounds (which sounds like the situation) Was it the bottom end or the top end? And what did it sound like? Man, I hope it's not truly doa.

Do you have oil pressure?

Pull the belts off and see if it still makes the noise.

If it does pull the plug wires one at a time and see if you can narrow it down to one cylinder. It might be a rod bearing or wrist pin.

Honestly, I was freaked so I shut her down before I even bothered to look at the gauges. Taking a quick look at the oil pressure would have been a smart move on my part. Sheesh.

I am nearly 100% that the knocking is coming from the crankcase/block area rather than anything up around the belts and such.

Thanks Alpheus for the advice. If it wasn't 1:30am and pitch black out I'd give it a shot right now.

Whew Jason you had me worried there. I just viewed the video. Now take in consideration I am a backyard mechanic and have been for over 40 yrs but I don't think you have a major worry there. I am thinking a piston rod bearing is loose. Before you bury her, drain the oil and tip it upside down. remove the oil pan and check crank and rod bearings. There are many things that will cause that knock, including spark plugs too big and hitting the top of the piston. I have a gut feeling this is something you can take care of fairly easily.;)

Of coarse at one time I thought I was smart & good looking...oh well.
