Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

No sweat Chief, love your sweet rig, awesome!

I am nearly certain that my rubrail has all through bolts and they are all looking pretty good. I'll for sure go through them all to know they are solid though.

Thanks for stopping by man! :D

Just to clarify it is not the rubrail that was loose on mine. It was the rivets that hold the topcap to the hull. I'll try to find a picture of what I am talking about and post it.

OK, so I am waiting on my keel roller shafts - so I can mount the keel rollers - so I can do a leak test.

I am also waiting to see if my buddy will let me borrow his pressure washer - so I can spick and span that hull - so I can Gluvit.

In the meantime, here is what I got done tonight...

Mounted up the jack...

Man that green wheel is ugly, I think I really like it! This here jack was one thing for sure I was not going to replace. This thing is way heavy duty and rolls/cranks smooth like butta! Grease fittings, the works. It's stinking heavy, 25 lbs. worth (I was curious so I weighed it).

Well, then I decided it is about time to bring the V6 up to the garage.

Hoisted up with chains, come along, pulley and a pair of beefy trees, on the utility trailer...

Safe and sound in the garage...

I am pretty excited that I have this motor uncovered and up to the house:D

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Thanks for the wellcome, Jason!!! LOVE the boat!!! Thats why its StarCrafts Forever!!! They are relative easy to safely modify for your/my specific use....
Every boat I have had was a STARTING point which was re-built to fit my specific(Sometimes weird, all-ways different wants/needs!!)
Will have to get one of the grandkids to take some pics an show me how to post them online!!! Have some comments Re: the extruded keel/rollers for later..
To fshngho.....As an early teen, i was repainting a 12' bateau(thats Cajun for jon boat/flat) and read-up on everything I could find to do it correctly.....Everything I found said to use zinc chromate primer on bare aluminum, so thats what I did.......Later, after a number of uses, I began to notice what appeared to be "soft spots", which turned out to be corrosion at a number of the re-primed bare spots which had eaten thru the hull in places....
Re: Zinc anodes..YES, Their supposed to be "sacrificial" and deteriorate instead of your hull.........They MUST be totally isolated from the hull or it will react also!!! Isolating gaskets inside n out, plus rubber/vinyl tubing on the bolts thru the transome...
Talk to you guys later.....(Jim) SC's Forever!

Ya know Jason, after you go through the motor and clean it up, if you paint it Ford Blue it will run better and longer
Just trying to be helpful :D Seriously its great you got her uncovered and in DA House! Another step Bro.

Thanks fsh! Yah, I am pretty excited just to be talking about the motor at this point!

I ended up trashing my come along last night picking up that whole thing. I think it has a 3500# rating but I bought it at Harbor Freight so it's true weight capacity should be about that of a large dog.:D

Well dog gone Jas, you paid half the cost at HF, you get half the performance!
Jeez some people want it all:eek:
Bright side: you didn't have to go up and down the stairs a few hundred times to get the motor inside.;)

Too right fish, too right.:D

So tonight's report...

1) I got another quote on re covering my seats - better but not great (yet).

2) I stared at the Merc for a good while. Yup, I stared at it.

Rock on!

Yah, this marine engine is simply uncharted territory for me. I need to get familiar with, well, everything! I am looking forward to staring with wrench in hand down the road though!

That thing is going to fly with the V6 in there.

Sorry Jas but I don't remember. Are you going with a rebuild or general maintanence? Also whats the HP difference between the old power plant vs this v-6 ? You probably know I'm not a fan of IB/OB's but you have my attention with that v-6. Remember, the worst part of any job is getting started. Good Luck

Excellent question fsh. Technically, I don't know the answer yet. When I bought the sacrificial Baha, I went off of what the marine tech's had told me about the driveline and they had it backed it up with receipts. Rebuilt, top to bottom, winterized every year by them, the works. I bought it when there was still 2' of snow surrounding the boat at the marine dealers place, so the situation as it was, I wasn't going to have them run it.

The owner was way behind on storage fees/maintenance fees and the boat was actually slated to have the motor pulled and the hull chopped up by the marina. The owner just wanted to be done with the whole thing. So, I got it for a song. If the whole driveline is toast I could probably part it out and break even on the whole deal. Maybe lose a buck, but maybe even make a buck. Of course, then I'd be motorless too.

I am not really a gambler but I did take the bet on this. If I lose, I think I'll be ok as I won't be out that much, if anything. If I win, I'll be pumped!

My guess at this point...

I think I have a V6 that is good to go but will need all of the routine maint. stuff done (bellows, u joints, water pump, fluids, and on...)

My plan is to have her at fired up before winter actually sets in! Then over the course of the cold weather I can be working on mating the engine and boat in my garage.

Time will tell my friend!

Sounds like a good plan. When you are ready me and Murphy will take a walk in the woods. Maybe I will be able to find a sink hole I can bury him in. At the very least I can tie him to a tree.

Thanks fsh!

The good Lord knows I'll need all the help I can possibly get on the engine portion of this rebuild.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Jason, I haven't figured out yet how to attach pics to pm's so I have to do this here. I have this little gizmo for my setup on the LL. I don't really need it but it came with all the MC1 parts manuals and stuff I've been buying for the last couple of years. It says here that the cavitation plate and the bottom of the boat should line up. With this in mind I'm thinking you should contact a Mercruiser dealer and have them order you one of these for the motor and outdrive you are about to install in your boat. The measurements may be different than the merc 1's we have in the 75's. whattayathink??? Anybody else think maybe I'm over thinking this?

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Just did this on my re-engine project. Turns out the cavetation plate can be a couple of inches up or down from the bottom without impacting performance. To high the prop and cooling pickup comes out of the water. To low and you give up a little performance.

I tried the templates that are circulated here in the forums. Found that the lower holes were off. I used 1/8" plywood to make a template using my inner gimbal plate. With a little patience this worked out pretty good.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Thanks for posting up fellas!

The cool thing I have going for me is that once I remove everything from whats left of Thumper the Baja I should have the perfect template right there in front of me on the old Baja transom, eh! I do have a paper template for a VP which I am pretty sure is identical to the Merc keyhole cutout (yup I'll confirm that). That paper template will provide me with the layout lines that I'll need to match up with the "X Dimention". So, all in all, I should be aok.

What would be great is if I had an additional set of measurements just to be sure, piece of mind sort of.

NB (and any other mid 70's Islander owners with completely bare transoms) that is where you can give me a hand!

Here is what I am thinking...

If you measure from your seam at the bottom of the V up to the bottom of the keyhole, then, the seam to the top of your keyhole that would give me an additional pair of reference lines to work from.

Does that make sense?

These set of marks would really help me with the horizontal axis part of the equation. The vertical axis should be easy (find the center line, done).

Yours being an MC1 and mine being an Alpha really shouldn't make a difference in the actual placement of the cutout.

This is one part of the rebuild that I absolutely DO NOT want to screw up. Measure, measure, measure, measure, measure, measure, measure, measure, measure, measure, measure, cut. That is my plan.:D

:D

For yesterday...

I still don't have keel roller shafts and still don't have a power washer so more staring at the Merc. I am trying to familiarize myself as much as possible before I put a wrench to her. The more time I spend with her the less intimidated I think I am becoming. I am still very intimidated though!

I did take some more careful measurements on the motor mounts and the Islander stringers. It looks as though the mounts are going to land dead on those stringers, sweet! The motor height will be another matter dictated by the placement of the outdrive, but, I think I'll be good there too.

Happy Friday Guys!!
