I agree that you will thank yourself down the road for taking care of the trailer now. I just hate dealing with trailer lights myself.

Nice work:D

Too funny!

While I was running the wire wheel today all I could think about was how awesome it would be installing the lights rather than having all this metal dust blowing in my face!:D

I threw on the new 5,000# hitch coupler and threw down a root beer float to finish the day!

Speaking of lights, are you going to run some of those new fangled rope lights down the undercarriage like the lowriders? No, I am not joking, it actually helps at night when pulling out the boat.:D

If you go with LED lights with dedicated grounds run, you'll have no problems.

Gosh, I have never thought of that. Huh.

Well, I know it would help me a ton when I am pulling the rig out of the drive when it is dark. You see, I have a patch of huge pines that requires some skills to get through with the length of my set up (Suburban + big ol Islander = long). The clearance is only a few inches on each side and I need to do some fancy maneuvering to get her through. I have been meaning to take down a couple of them to make it a little more straight forward.

Hmmmm, rope lights on the trailer. Maybe too fancy for me?

Yah, I have a brand new set of LED tail lights that I got a super deal on! Can't wait to get to them!

So in between coats of paint yesterday I pulled the trailer frame up out of the back woods...

Man, there is a lot of wire wheeling there! I'm not sure if I can steal the time to do this in one stretch. I may have to do it in sections.

My little JD 110 feels so inadequate compared to Clay's sweet piece of equipment.

Chris, he planted trees 40 years ago so he could swing the boat from them and paint his trailer:p

And Jason, I'm thinking maybe those stringers you had in your tub may have been an OMC thing. I didn't have them in mine????

Hey Chris, thanks for stopping by! Yah, NB is right. I really like all the trees I have access to, ha!

The boat is sitting on furniture movers with spare tires to protect the hull. That way I can move the boat around in the garage and have access to all sides. How I got it there is another story. You can find it in my thread here. I am not about to re-post it as some of the dudes around here just might not be able to resist "giving me the business" (I think that is what Wally and the Beev used to say, right?).

Have fun!

Yah, I'm wit ya!

But, at this point, I am REALLY wishing I had a sand blaster! I am not doing a very good job getting into the tight places of this trailer frame. I think I am going to be a grumpy dude down the road when my trailer is rusting out in the corners there.

I can justify picking up a blaster, I think they are around $125ish. I don't think my compressor will be able to handle that kind of load though. I think it might be in the 26 gallon range. To go to a big one, wow money, big money!

I don't know, I may need to stop by Harbor Freight (I really don't like any tools HF has though, junk).

We'll see how it goes...

Yah, those trees would be my JD compact tractor with front end loader substitute at the moment, eh!!:D

Yup, OMC stringer drive it is! Tell you what, that might be the one awesome thing about that stringer, it left me some sweet mounts for the Merc V6!

My quick, rough, measurements tell me that they may be right on the money for mounting too! Time will tell what sort of mod I may or may not need to do my friend.

Cheers!

Man that is ridiculous! There is a whole lot of fluff, jibber jabber, random thoughts and straight up nonsense in there! I did try to be detailed when it cam to the actual boat rebuild stuff though. I am certain you saw some stuff you are sure NOT to do!

I still feel like I am maybe only about 20% of the way through this process. Aaaaakkkk, I have a long way to go.

I rented a backing soda blaster that connects to a pressure washer for something like $35 for the day.The baking soda was only like $10 for a big bag.I don't remember the weight.I did a truck frame in like an hour. All I did after that was hit it with a scotch bright pad, wipe it down with acetone, and prime.

Thanks for the heads up Ben!

I called a couple of my local rental centers. One doesn't even deal with that stuff anymore, the other was quoting in the couple hundred range for the day.

That said, I found my way to HF today. I grabbed a 40# sandblaster on sale for $100. The the HF guy said that it should work fine with my compressor and if it doesn't, bring it back. So, receipt in a safe place and stay tuned.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hi there,

Long time reader on this thread, but first time poster.

I was just reading about your troubles finding trailer parts, and I hope I'm not too late to help.

I'm not sure if you've been there or not, but Woodland Industries in Kawkawlin on M-13 is a fantastic place to go for trailer parts. The people that work there are very, very knowledgeable and they seem to stock a lot of kinda oddball parts. They're also much cheaper than TSC on a lot of stuff.

Again, hope I'm not too late to help. Things are looking great, keep up the good work!
