Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Wow, I am totally wiped out. After about 6 weeks of butt kicking hard work, as of today, I am done renovating 5 apt units. Paint, electrical, plumbing, flooring, decks, cleaning, cleaning, cleaning. I saw this coming way back in Jan (Post #51). Well I was right about one thing, my time was gone. 12 hour days have been the norm all along with lots of 15 -16 mixed in. I was able to sneak away for a couple of days up to the lake but those were pretty well my only days off the whole time. I am exhausted.

I was wrong about the cash point though. I held a super strict budget and saved a huge amount of money by not being stupid and working really stinking hard.

So, I think I can get back to regular sleeping, regular eating, maybe even shower normally. I might even be able to back into my running regiment.

As it relates here...

Back to business on this old Starcraft!

Nothing crazy. Just back to my 30 min. per day pace. One step at a time sort of deal. I am looking forward to it!

Tomorrow, I think I'll just be lazy though. Just for one day.

Cheers!

You gotta do what you gotta do. Nice to see you have some time to hard work on the boat...that doesn't really seem like hard work somehow :)

Great to hear it Jason and yes, I remember you saying this was coming.:( Now time to slow down to my pace.:D
Only bad thing is if SWMBO reads your thread, she will look at me and wonder why I don't work as hard as you:confused: I guess she will never understand being lazy takes a lot of work;)

I found the same thing - not being stupid with money results in HAVING MORE MONEY! You and I should run for the White House in 2012.

So is it a race now? Which one of us will turn the key first?

Well, being lazy just went out the window. Just got a call, no hot water (pilot light is out I am certain) and the dishwasher is leaking. Ahhhh yes, the life of a landlord. Got to love it!

Yah, the boat hardly ever feels like hard work. Looking forward to it!

Builds character though eh!!

Yah, knew it was coming but now it's done (well almost). I try to pack it all in during the months of July and August so the rest of the year is mainly mowing lawns and any minor issues that may come up.

Yah probably. I suppose I'll need to see how far along I get this fall be she can stay in there so I can work through all the interior stuff through the winter (so long as the outdrive stays off).

Oh buddy, politics. I am restraining myself at the moment form going off on a long one! Restraint Jason, restraint. I will say this, I'm not a very good crook/lair so I don't think I'd last very long in what some call "public service".

Race? You win! (unless my competitive side decides to take over)

Yah, the goal is still a summer of 11 float! Are you shooting to get yours in the water this year yet?

Thanks for stopping by fellas!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Well that lazy day sure never showed itself! If anybody sees it send it my way will ya!

But today I actually got something accomplished on the rig!

This is one of my trailer axle brackets...

I wire wheeled it getting to about 90% bare metal...

Then I sprayed two coats of primer...

Then three top coats...

All that spray painting in a very poorly ventilated workshop. I'm not the smartest backyard boat builder on this site!

Then I got the other bracket and repeated the whole process.

Even though running the wire wheel on an old rusty trailer isn't the most fun job out there it was great so see just a little forward motion again!!

Oh come on, there isn't a single guy on here that would rather knock rust off an old trailer than go fishing!!!! Yah, and I know that is exactly what you are doing Bcast! Skipping out on your boat rehab to throw fish in the cooler! Smart man I suppose.

Cheers!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

So yesterday I cut, split, hauled, and stacked wood all day. Pretty wiped out so not much happened.

Now it's about 10 before 4 in the morning and I am eyeing at the rig ready to get to work. Bummer is that all the next steps need to involve really loud stuff like grinders!

Ah well, I'll go put some more coffee in my body.

These photos would be for my fellow Islander owner DucatiDave.

Here is the port side window, outside...

It's a pretty cool deal. That thumb screw will lock the window in place. I'll need to do something with my rubber washers as they are rotting.

Cheers!

Jason, I was just commenting yesterday to the admiral about how cool those wing windows are on the islander.

Jas, I was looking at your restore. May do some restoring myself. Thought of something. have you considered storing your batteries up front under the seating if there is room. One it would take some weight of the back end and move it to front to help keep the nose down. Also, you could mount the selector switch under the dash for easy access. Just a thought.

Yah, they are pretty sweet! I am really happy that mine are complete. A couple of rubber washers and a little oil and they should work great! Cheers buddy!

Thanks for stopping by man! Yah, since the beginning I fully planned to have the batts in the bow area somewhere for added weight. But now that I have that second fuel tank up there I am not sweating that at all. Now I feel like I can put them wherever is convenient to reach but still out of the way, and logical to wire up. Transom maybe, in a seat box maybe? We'll see how that part develops.

Hey, I hope you are getting your motor issues sorted. Your Islander needs to be on the water! Mine has a long way to go yet.

Rock on!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Jas -

I read somewhere a long time ago that the deal with locating batteries is about minimizing vibration. Apparently they don't deal well with the pounding the bow takes. So that's why most people put 'em in the back.

Just something else to think about....
