Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hi there,

Long time reader on this thread, but first time poster.

I was just reading about your troubles finding trailer parts, and I hope I'm not too late to help.

I'm not sure if you've been there or not, but Woodland Industries in Kawkawlin on M-13 is a fantastic place to go for trailer parts. The people that work there are very, very knowledgeable and they seem to stock a lot of kinda oddball parts. They're also much cheaper than TSC on a lot of stuff.

Again, hope I'm not too late to help. Things are looking great, keep up the good work!

Hey chewie, thanks for stopping by! Yah, they are good folks up there. When I was driving around I kept thinking that the parts I needed were pretty basic ya know. Nothing fancy or unique about hanger bolts or lugs, eh! Anyway, all is good. I just need to pick up hub dust covers. I think I know where I can get those.

Cheers Man!

Edit - that blaster is a 90# that I picked up not 40#. I was eyeballing the 40, decided to go with the bigger. Sorry!

If you want to "test" out the new blaster on my trailer to make sure it works ok prior to the "real" work I guess I could help you out:D

I hope you haven't already shipped it to Virginia:)

We could take SS to Saginaw Bay to get it out of the way while the testing is done...if I have to I could keep an eye on the boat while you test it out.;)

Hey, hey! I have even a better idea! Haul up that SS, I'll take it out to the bay and run her while you are "testing" the blaster on my trailer! Now that is a super idea, yah, I'd let you do that!

Yah, I knew I was feeling something there.:D

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Well, I was dad on duty for most of the day so not a lot of progress to report.

If you remember a while back I removed all that wimpy/disintegrating yellow foam between the bow deck stringers and aluminum skin. I had all sorts of thoughts about what to replace it with but I decided to go with the old standby PL...
P1030326.jpg

You can see the stringer closest to you there with a big gap and the one behind it with the gap all closed and filled up with PL. I ran a bead down all the stringers and smoothed em over with the backside of a plastic spoon. Once that cures it should make a solid connection between the stringers and skin - way better than the original spongy/floppy bow deck.

By the way if you are wondering...

That white spray paint on the stringers was from the factory paint job and the singe marks are from my foam removal job:eek:

I have some thoughts about how to work up the interior here - inspired by Bret (wrfalpacas).

I also finished up the patch job on the inner aluminum transom skin. Sorry guys, I missed the photo on that one!

One small step closer.

If what you're thinking is FRP panels then I totally support you.

Well, that and a few other things too. As I see Bret's deal it looks like he covered just the one section of his cabin (just a bit different than my Islander set up). For me, I am thinking that I'd leave that section and cover the more bow section actually. Don't know if that makes any sense without photos handy. Insulation and lighting are definitely in mind though.

I have the hatch up there to deal with which will be the crux of that particular project. To make that part look finished will be a tough deal I think. It needs to be done right so I'll need to keep stewing on it some.

Here is an option for lighting in the cabin. Might even bring back some fond memories.

I decided to go gray - thought it would go well with a white trailer and black on white hull.

I only got one done yesterday, I'll see about the other three today.

Happy Labor Day Guys!

Was that fender galvalnized? Don't you have to do something special to paint galvanized? I think paint doesn't stick to it well at all.

Er, um rats. I just looked it up. Poop.

I have painted galv in the past and has been fine. I suppose I should have researched that a little better. Man what a dummy!

OK, now what do I do????

Continue on in ignorance, clean/prime/paint???

Wire wheel all that new paint off and then go to cold galvanize spray paint???

I actually had that cold galvanize spray paint in my hand yesterday, read the directions and it said something like "prime clean metal then spray". So, I figured I could just as easy prime then paint.

Hmmmmmm....

Whatdoya think?

Signed, "big dope"

Oh, sheesh.....

I just read the back of the primer can: "do not use on galvanized metal".

Dropped as a baby, sorry guys.

Ideally they need to be etch primed (zinc chromate) first before primer/topcoat, you could always just keep going the way you are and see what happens, no big deal.

Dont use cold gal for this, its used when you are working with either bare or gal steel, welding/grinding etc.
