Good idea:) I could probably make the run from Port Huron to Chicago with that thing:p

It would have to be a non-smoking rig if I'm sitting on an 80gal tank:)

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hello

I think you are on the right track by getting away from the OMC. I have had my Islander for about two weeks now and I have the floor back in it. I have a rebuilt 140 hp MerCruiser that came with the boat. (The outdrive is trashed) I really hate to put the little 4-banger iback n it but it would be running very soon if I make that change. I would really love to have a V6 in it. I bought a 1970 IMP with the 140 Mercruiser. It was a victum of the Arizona sun but the motor started right up and the outdrive shifts fine so I am into a useable engine and outdrive for $300.00. I need to put the IMP motor into my Chieftan. It is a 120 that runs great but it blows oil everywhere. Just got home from a two night stay at the local lake with the old Chieftan. I love it.

Anyone need IMP parts?

Tell ya what R.D., you really ought to post up your rebuild projects here on the restoration thread or the Starcraft area. We'd all really dig your boat rebuilds!

Thanks for stopping by!

Well, I actually got something done today in between chasing kids around and cooking some chicken on the grill.

I hauled the trailer back up to the house...

Here are some before shots...

And here is what I got done tonight after about 10 metal cutting disks and a lot of sweat...

Frame, nearly bare of all rigging now...

Axles, tongue, winch/stand, jack all off...

And the fenders off...

Well, it's something, eh!

Yah, I'll make it. Sweaty and stinkiy, but I'll make it.

I actually don't mind them all that much. They aren't nearly as much fun as working on the big tub, don't get me wrong! Probably the thing I don't like the most is trying to get in all those tight corners in an attempt to wire wheel all of the rust out, ya know. A real pain.

I am out of town at a wedding this whole next weekend so this is probably as far as I'll get for a while, bummer!

My idea of a complete axle swap is quickly losing steam. I need 64" on spring center and it looks as though my local guys can't accommodate. I may be in for new hubs or maybe just bearings. We'll see.

Give Woodland trailer in Kawkawlin a call. They are good people to work with.
Go and get yourself a Sand blaster, and some 40 grit sand from TSC it will make short work of that trailer.

Well you were right about Woodland, they have what I need fair price too. I think I may try to sell my axles before I buy new just to be safe.

You also may be right about a sand blaster. It may be about time for me to buy a new tool. I was looking at all that rust today, wire wheels and such will be a long and sweaty road. Hmmmmm, a sand blaster, maybe. That would sure make my life easier buddy, good suggestion!

By the way...

I did make my way to Northwood and Franks a few days ago. Exact same price on those Berts Custom Tackle tracks (and pretty much anything else I looked at). I know that Northwoods touts themselves as a wholesale outlet, but I don't see it so much, ya know?

OK, should this old beat up trailer be restored to white or to black? I am about 95% sure that the rig is going this color scheme (minus the swoosh decals)...

So how about the trailer, what do you fellas think, white or black, eh?

I like gray :D

You are going to love having the axles mounted on those L brackets. Lots easier than everything welded right to the frame. Mine is on a bracket too.

Figures an SS guy throws a random color out there, sheesh!:D

Yah, I am thinking that bracket will make things just a bit easier cleaning, prepping, painting, mounting and the all important part of balancing the weight. I am pretty happy about it.

Hey, I am pumped for ya to get your rig out some more buddy, good on ya!

That will be me too soon enough. Talked with my co-treasurer of the soccer team and his next door neighbor at work is an industrial sandblaster dude. Says he'll walk over with me to get it done.

Just need to leave the boat in the water somewhere for a couple of days.

Wire wheels suck when you have that much to do. They fall apart and the wires will stick in your skin, I know. As far as northwoods they have brought up their prices to retail on almost everything in the fishing department. But the inline off shore boards are $18.99, a buck cheaper than at Franks. Both places are still way cheaper than Gander mountain.

I would go with white or grey, whatever matches the hull. Bright colors are better for trailers so that you can see it easily. Less kicking it and easier launching:)
