Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hi, I would have mentioned this a little sooner, I've been offline for a while.

I have a couple concerns about sealing the transom wood in Epoxy.
1. Unless you are installing an outboard, once you cut the hole for the drive you'll need to re-coat where you cut.
2. Any hole you drill or attaching things to the transome ( like inner screwholes will need sealant. Else moisture will get in.

One thing I did was to put some 3M 4200 & 5200 in a few places along the channel at the bottom.

I also found I had a hole right at the channel the hole couldn't be seen from the outside but I'm sure thats where I had a leak. be sure to check for screw holes where pitots and transducers were.

I also had a problem when I cut a little to much off the top of my transom where the alum panel dipped down, check for straightness and level before screwing (new holes in transom) the alum back down.

Nice work !!!

Hey, here too!!:D

Thanks for stopping by, eh!

Yah, I am with ya. Once the outdrive hole is cut I'll actually need to measure and add to that transom as it needs to be between 2" and 2.25". How much do I need? Don't know at this point but I will after I install and make the hole cut. THEN I can seal everything up again.

As for the rest of the bolts going in I'll either over drill and fill with epoxy and then re-drill (tedious), or, drill and use 5200. We'll cross that bridge...

Bottom line, NO WATER IS ALLOWED TO TOUCH THE WOOD! I will not be going through this again, eh!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

So, my transom is 2 3/4" peices and there's about 1/16" of Epoxy, and on the inside I used a peice of 1/2" (that I wish I could've sealed with CPES (Clear Penetrating Epoxy System) which is what I used instead of sealing with epoxy ( I broke screws and screw bits installing some braces ).

I also had a little bit about 1/16" coating of 5200 around the opening on the inside of the transom between the wood and the alum (did after dropping the transom in but before tightening it up )

This left me with enough threads on the gimbal housing bolts.

I still have my core from cutting the main hole.. I could trace and MAIL to you.

One of the problems I see you facing is locating the gimbal port-starboard then vertically.. ouch..

I would've gone with an outboard.

let me know.

Thanks Brian!

Well, I'll have the cut out from the transom of the Baja once I pull the drive line out of that so I should me set there. The X Dimension will give me where everything needs to be lined up. I'll be measuring 100 times and cutting once!:D

Excellent.. Sounds like you understand the complexity..

My transom not only rotted from between the alum, but from the bottom up, from the D-rings, and from the TOP down..dripping down the channel along the top aft edge and in little corrosion holes in the alum above the transom wood..

jas make sure you give careful consideration to where the fills will be for those tanks and the routing of the fill hose(s). I found out that stuff is NOT very flexible at all so you'll want a pretty straight shot.

Yup, I am with ya! Good news is that it is a fairly straight shot so should be an easy installation and less $$$!

Wow Jas, that'll be the Starcraft ST then. ST for Super tanker! :D

TII

Nice fly by the way. In a couple of thousand years some scientist will find it during the Islander's next resto and use it for DNA experiments! :D

She's a tanker now. If I run about of gas at one of these outings I know you can spare 10 gallons :)

You guys crack me up! I have come to the conclusion tinny owners are a special breed! :D

Ya know, seems like I've been called "special" many times in my day. Thanks for the compliment!;)

Man, I have been having trouble carving out time to work on the tub lately!

I think I may switch gears over to the trailer. Having the boat mobile will help in power washing the hull out and maneuvering for the drive line install. Plus it will be nice to have that all set before hand vs. having to wait for it to get done just to get the rig in the water, eh!

So, on to the trailer!

Good plan Jason, I have recurring nightmares where my rig is all set to go and my trailer falls apart when I go to pull out of the driveway:eek::p

Are the axles good? Seems like you should be able to get her in servicable condition without too much work...right?

With your fuel tanks full that thing is gonna have some weight to it...so I think it's great that you ended up keeping the double-axle.

Yah, just sorta started to make sense with logistics the way they are for me I suppose.

Dreams, here is one for ya...

(This is where you do the Wayne's World dream fingers and chime)

A few nights ago I was reading one of the Merc manuals right before I dozed off. So then I had a dream that I hooked up muffs to the V6, turned on the water, flipped the key and VROOOOOOMMMMM! She started right right up and purred like a kitten! I was psychied! I did a few fist pumps and everything!

Then, I looked over to the battery connection, and, THERE WAS NO BATTERY!

(Insert Wayne's World dream fingers here)

Shocked me right out of my dream! And it was all going so well, rats!

Yah, for the trailer, I am glad I stuck with the tandem. She should serve me well. I posted up over on EZ's thread that I'll likely just pick up two new axles. The cost won't be all that much more than doing a bearing refit after selling off my old axles on clist. We'll see though. Really, the grunt work will be in cleaning, prepping and painting. Not hard, just tedious ya know.

Cheers Buddy!

Just so you know Jas, the debate between 14 and 19 gallons has been tough on me......You planning on buying gas once a year?:)

Yah, maybe! That way it hurts really really bad just once!

Nah, I'll likely use the 33 gallon most of the time which will be just great. The 28 gallon further up the bow will be filled when I am putting the boat in the water for a long weekend - won't need to pull it out of the water or drag portable fuel cans around to fill er up!

You have yourself one heck of a project, nice job!!! I think you need both the 14 and the 19 by the way.:D

Sounds like a good plan! I know there is no such thing as fuel economy on a boat, but I'm hoping my little 2L Volvo is easy on the wallet. Original was 12gal! I'm sure I'll stil wish for 40 on camping weekends:)

One heck of a project is right, for better or worse! Hoping to get my floor and foam in this weekend, and then the structure is done! After relaxing on the water on my other boat Friday of course!

Just in case you feel like you need additional fuel storage you might want to look into this as well:p

Hope you can find some time to work on the rig with this nice weather. You're probably chomping at the bit to get working on that trailer:)

Man that tank is awesome! Only $90 too! Yah, I am good on my tanks, you think it would work in your SS? You could use it as your seat bases:D
