Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Jas, this is starting to resemble a battery placement issue...

You have pretty much decided to re-paint...STOP!

I mentioned this before...
Try the run removal tool...
th

A bottom feeder alternative is a new, fresh single edge razor blade...held at 90? to the surface and dragged across the run, very lightly, using both hands to guide it, similar to using a spokeshave in woodworking only on a much smaller scale...:D

The razor blade method worked best for me when fixing a paint run. I liked it better than the little run remover tool. Wrap a thin layer of masking tape around the ends of the razor blade leaving the middle 2/3 of the blade open. The tape will work as a guide to keep from gouging the paint.

OK fellas, progress shots.

I installed a pair of transom cleats, fat beefy 8 inchers...

I also got the 2nd and 3rd cockpit combing pieces upholstered and installed...

A very long time ago I wrapped these shelf panel deals in carpet. I wrapped em so the pattern was running side to side. Well, that was kinda bugging me so I re wrapped em so the pattern now runs bow/stern. I like that a bunch more, so then I installed those too...

Thanks gents, we're gettin there anyway:)

K, little more progress - I installed the bow most cleat and a pair of navigation lights...

I really wanted those specific lights, I do believe they were on the latest versions of the Islander. I had to work pretty hard to find them, then I had to work hard to find a good deal on em (they were heckava spendy). Well, there they are and I like them a bunch:thumb:

Jas,

Looks awesome... Nice work! Gives me hope, as I'm finishing a 23' Chris Craft Lancer. Similar setup to yours.

By the way, what color/paint did you use on the inside floor, etc...(maybe you posted, but didn't see). It really compliments the white, especially when there will be lots of action on the floor(especially from the little ones). I thought about white on mine, but don't think it's a good idea!

Again, great work!

Yah, I grabbed em off eBay for semi reasonable so they didn't hurt too bad. Full retail was pretty gross on those.

Yup, I am defanitely going to be running led's all around the cockpit, should be purdy cool:thumb:

Thanks Mario! Here ya go, check it out...

I like your color choice. Same as my 2011 Islander :)
Rattle cans! Man you must have a sore finger. If I lived near you, I would have had you drag that project over and I would spray it for you. But you would need to do the prep :)

Looking good you will be on the water before you know it. I am pretty sure the bilge vent hoses need to go all the way to the bottom of the bilge as the fuel fumes settle at the bottom. Mine are a half inch or less above the hull, both the in and the out. If the vent hoses make is difficult to change the oil filter move it with a remote set up as mine is mounted to the exhaust elbow for easy access. I have a complete remote oil filter set up PM me if interested. Remember when you are on the lake going 20+ mph no one will notice the paint.

Have a great evening

That central cleat will be great for pulling her onto the trailer solo. I wouldn't have even thought of the separate nav lights to enable that setup...pretty awesome, man!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Dude the Islander is lookin sick....even if she is still in the garage. Just got through with a twenty page catch up binge and as always I gotta say I love the work. I take it if your going for a pre freeze up splash that the bow is going to stay in it's case this year? (archery season is already two + weeks old here but I won't be out at least till the 18th when my rock lock becomes legal.) I love the paint job and please take GT's advice and fix the runs as opposed to a full re spray. Oh and I hope the misses never bought those towels.....

By the way as a literary aside have you ever read the book, A Year in a Yawl? 4 Michigan kids build a 30' yawl and become the first to complete the great circle route of the eastern U.S.. It's public domain (published 1906) so you can get an E-book copy pretty easy and for the worlds best price FREE. Decent read though it's a little too "boy's own adventure" for an adult and being from 1906 there are a couple N bombs and a few other racial slurs used when coming down the Mississippi so it certainly isn't PC in it's original age group. It's non fiction but who knows how much it was exaggerated...
