Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Yah doods, I actually sold that outdrive that came with Thumper a long time ago. Last summer I think?

See, the yoke shaft had rusted. It may have been ok but I really didn't want to break it all down to find out. I know once I get to that point in this project I'll be jonesing to get on the water. The ability to bolt on a brand new outdrive and run (plus the 3 year no fault warranty) was/is super appealing to me.

My math worked out like this: Sold the outdrive for $550 (if memory serves), complete water pump service $50ish, plus unknowns???? I figured I'm at least half way to the cost of a brand new, worry free, no rebuild outdrive. Had I started to break that outdrive down I may have very well found some high dollar necessary maintenance on top of that.

Yah, I might be justifying a little here, but I have kept a pretty strict/tight budget in other areas so I kinda feel like I can splurge here.

OK, I did grab some progress this morning. Rubrail channels and cockpit trim got two final swipes with the red metal sanding pad all the way around (all the really hard work was done many moons ago). Then I laid on the SharkHide...

Sorry for the dark photo there but I can assure you that they look about a 1000 times better than what I started with!

Real happy with how they turned out:joyous:

Jas, I agree with djp, slurge on the important / safety related bits and make do with the unimportant... for now! :)

Outdrive falls in the important category, I think. Unless you want to putt around on the kicker. No, I didn't think so. :)

BTW - The oops reference was unfair. He was working on a donor.

OK, morning progress, I got all my cabin windows cleaned up, man they were filthy. I can actually see through them now!

I have some more rehab to work through on em, I'll post up some photos when I get there.

So, on these cabin windows, I am nearly certain that I am going to want them tinted. I think it'll look a ton better and provide a small measure of security from would be thieves trying to checking out my gear stored in there when the boat is parked.

OK, now I have a couple of questions for you guys who have had stuff tinted. I haven't so I have no idea about this kinda stuff.

#1 The tinting goes on the inside, right?

#2 I assume that tinting is a lot like upholstery, a home made job looks like a home made job and a pro job looks like a pro job? Eh? That sound about right?

#3 If #2 is true, just a ball park, how much cheddar do you suppose I'd need to cough up for a tint job on these three cabin windows?

1- Yes...
2- on simple flat panes of glass, it can look just as pro as the pros...
Recommend using best quality 3m or equivalent tint...
Generally 3 tint grades available, but others exist...also different colors, black, gray, silver reflective, and many more, even a holographic type...
5%, 15-20% and 35% tint [35% is similar to what you'd see on a limousine, really dark] ...percentages are the amount of light transmission that is blocked from coming in...also, the darker stuff makes it harder to see out when it is dark outside...and you are stuck with whatever choice you make, pro or not...sometimes removal for replacement can be a real bear, although well installed, can last for many years...also makes it a tad cooler in the cuddy and helps to prevent UV from fading the interior...

I counted four windows...? anyhooo, less than a C-note if you DIY, not too much more should be charged by a good shop, maybe 150...?

Ever think about some nice curtains or shades you can adjust to the needs at hand...?

I've had a tint shop that's done 2 of my vehicles and the price seems good. My 2 front windows on my Silverado was 60 bucks, and all the windows on my impala for like 160? i think.... those ought to be in that catagory... I'd guess maybe 70-90 bucks... Although I would probably try it on my own for these as you don't have all the rubber gaskets and what not.....

I may be wrong here, but I have had a couple cars done in the past. Isn't the lower the %, the darker the tint?

I agree, that flat glass wouldn't be too hard to tint. No rolling up and down either, they just use soapy water and then trim the windows with a razor blade. You can probably save about $200 by doing it yourself.

Yes Sir, you are absolutely correct...I got a momentary brain dyslexia and inverted the numbers...
The percentage # IS the amount of light allowed to pass... [ie, 5% only allows about 5% of sunlight to pass through making it the darkest...]...oooopsie!

Just wanted to say amazing work so far. Have bumped into some of your video's on youtube over the last few weeks. I found some of the vids very informative. Its like having the Boat repair channel LOL. Been thinking of restoring a 1978 chieftain 18' OB. Well, when I have some time away from making alien costumes that is. Keep up the great work.

Hey, thanks for the kind words Stink!

Been thinking of restoring a 1978 chieftain 18' OB.

Do it man, rebuilding these big metal boats is super easy, should take ya just a couple of weekends! (please ignore the timeline on this thread:facepalm:)

Hey, window rehab early this morning fellas. See, all the sealant around the outside of my windows was really deteriorated...
P1110088.jpg

...and there were a lot of sections of the gasket that were plain gone. Also the gasket between the window assembly and the alum skin was pretty shoddy too...
P1110089.jpg

For the repairs I used 3M 4000 UV...
P1110090.jpg

All looking good and water tight...
P1110091.jpg

(I'll just take a razor blade to straighten up the corners n stuff)

On the port side window the gasket was so bad I just decided to make a whole new one...

Ultimately, these window frames and gaskets will be all painted up black in the not so distant future. I'm thinking I can do clean up work over the next few days and be into painting the topside next week. That will be cool!

Hope you guys have a great weekend!
