WOG - Pro pool installer you say? Uh oh. You'll not approve of what I have done! Let's just say my pool project is a whole lot like this Islander project - buy trashed boat from the junk yard for next to nothing, transplant a Merc into a boat designed for a OMC Stringer, try to make the whole thing beautiful and functional on a 0$ budget. Yup, my pool project is a lot like that!

muckruck - Hey welcome aboard man! North of Lansing you say, you must be just a stones throw from here then. Michigan - Starcraft Islander guy, awesome!:thumb:

Glad you are getting after that transom. It's not a bad job and it sounds like you've already got about 1/2 wrapped up by pulling the engine out of the way. My thread here has some good info on the transom replacement but you'll want to take a look at a few others too. I had about a hundred extra steps since I was going with a completely different driveline. Your work will no doubt be a lot more streamlined.

Lok has given you some great advice to get rolling. Heck, I'd bet if you work smart you guys might be able to get back on the water as early as this weekend. I'm certain your father would love to get that Islander floating to hang out with you.

Get a thread up and running and post lots of photos, the guys around here are super and happy to help out!:welcome:

Hey, I had a friend, when I was in the business, that put an above ground pool, "In the ground", and then called me up to come troubleshoot it when he had problems. He basically dug a 3 ft hole and set the pool in it and then filled it in. When it started to settle the walls and the plumbing all started to collapse and he just couldn't understand why!!!! I just said "Here's Your Sign!!!" I won't go into how we fixed it but...We did fix it!!!!:D:eek:

You are exactly right Glen. A couple of weeks ago I gave up the idea that the Islander would be finished for the summer. I felt a whole lot less stressed when I made that decision. Between now and the start of school I have a ridiculous amount of work to get done here at the house and on my two college houses. Once school starts I'll be able to get back to my regular daily work sessions on the Islander. I have 100% confidence this boat will be done before the snow flies again.

A few late fall runs in this Islander should be super fun:becky:

When I first read this, I thought, wow, Jas built his own pool? I wonder how he did that, maybe ^^^^

Um, stay tuned WOG......

Yep, two posts later - there it is.

All kidding aside... I (we) want to see pics... If your prior "bottom feeder" projects are any indication, I am sure the project is top-shelf and turned out awesome!!

Glad to see you checking in here...

Growing up I lived next door to a carpenter, apparently a pretty freaking good one too... he did work on a bunch of churches, and fixed up some vintage ones...

anyways we got an above ground pool, one day he came over to take a look at it.. a few weeks later he had one up dug into the ground about 2ft (4ft pool), and a month later he had a full deck built around it.
The last time I was by the old house (rental now days) he still had the deck/pool up, and nicer than ever. :)

Yup, most everything will need to be replaced. The final verdict won't be here till spring.

The good thing is that the boat is complete so I can use the old stuff as templates which will make my life a lot easier. Most all of the aluminum angle in in good condition so that can be reused. While the cushions in the cabin are looking rough the foam actually feels pretty good so that might be just a recover job.

4.3 Merc, hmmmmm. Thanks for the pointer!

I have the same boat and might be looking at re powering it, I've heard different things. Some say to put a 150 optimax 2smoke o/b and some say 200-250 4 stroke o/b

Out of those two what would you guys do? any ideas of fuel economy difference?

Pool..... hopes it big enough for the islander to float in. I had that experience last summer, my pool is sitting without water this year. It settled on me, settled bad. One side sunk about 10 inches. Got to relevel and install a new liner. I need to make progress on my tinny, but I have been layed up since July 4 with a infection in my leg. Thought I was going to loose it. I hoping to get back to work on mine in a month or so.

I am doing the transom on a 1976 Starcraft Chieftain Cuddy Cabin. How did you make room at the top to drop your new transom in?
I just looked at the date on this post and it's 2010.

I have a 22ft. OB and I think the plate on it says 175 HP max. The boat is in Pensacola and I won't be there until weekend of 3 August. I'll check and let you know. I have a 140 'rude two stroke that moves it pretty well. Cheers!

Pretty sure the internet has a 5000 post limit per forum thread rule . At 5001 posts the internet explodes which creates a black hole and swallows the earth. :devilish:

Well Jas, sometimes we just have to sit back and relax and just be satisfied that when we get them done they will be done. My desire to have the Chief done before my salmon trip next month has not panned out so will have to take the old boat for the trip but at least I know I am progressing well and maybe join you for that fall splash. Maybe.....unless I run out of time...
